Chapter 376: Blood on the Palace Walls (I)

“It’s not like I can suddenly stop my stress,” murmured Primrose.

Dr. Celdric guided her to sit on one of the beds, placing a pillow behind her back so she could lean comfortably. “Of course, Your Majesty. It’s only natural to feel this way. Others feel it too.”

But in truth, the only ones who actually seemed stressed were the human doctors, Callen, and herself. Everyone else looked calm. Salem, for example, had spent the entire time trying out every bed in the underground chamber as if he were on a holiday.

Was Primrose being overly dramatic? Callen was a beast, but he was a newcomer, while Dr. Grace and Dr. Alina were humans who had never experienced anything this terrifying before.

Then, Primrose suddenly heard Lorelle’s thoughts. [This place is cozy and quiet. I could probably sleep here for a damn two days straight.]

Lorelle was lying on one of the beds, having pulled the blanket up to her chin as she prepared to sleep.

“You look calm, Dr. Celdric,” Primrose said softly. “I suppose this isn’t your first experience.”

Dr. Celdric signaled Dr. Grace to fetch a bottle of water for her before replying, “It isn’t, Your Majesty. Actually, this is the second time I’ve found myself in such a dire situation.”

He rarely came to the palace, in fact, only a handful of times. More precisely, he only came when Edmund was approaching his rut period to give him the proper medicine to suppress it.

However, one time he’d been unlucky because the palace was suddenly attacked by a pack of werewolves. Fortunately, Edmund hadn’t entered his rut period yet, so he was able to wipe them out easily.

“Today’s situation is still better,” Dr. Celdric admitted. “At least I was able to reach the hiding place.”

Primrose couldn’t imagine how terrifying it would be above ground, and the thought alone made her even more uneasy.

What happened to her husband now? Could he fight them easily? What if the Alpha of the pack had injured him so badly that he wasn’t able to stand up?

“Relax, Rosie,” Lorelle said lazily from the bed beside her. “I’ve watched those devilish two fight for years, and trust me, they’re nearly impossible to kill.”

She added, “I just hope my brother Edmund comes back without too many wounds. As for the other one … whatever. He can take a sword straight to the stomach and I wouldn’t care.”

Primrose pressed her lips together. Every day, Lorelle’s hatred toward Leofric grew more obvious. But honestly? He deserved it, so to hell with him.

“Don’t overthink it,” Lorelle murmured, turning onto her side. “Your husband is the kind of man who would do anything to protect his family, and now that he has two people to protect, I’m sure he’ll fight twice as hard.”

Primrose placed her hand gently over her stomach, while her other hand clutched the poison vial so tightly her knuckles turned pale. Her voice trembled as she whispered, “I just want to see him soon.”

But honestly, there was something that confused her. If the Blackpeak Pack had always been bold enough to attack the palace, then why had they never done it back when she lived here in her first life?

She had spent almost three years in the palace then, and not once had she seen a single evil werewolf make it past its walls.

Or perhaps … Edmund had already dealt with them before they could even set foot inside. After all, in their first life, he often spent his time outside rather than staying by her side.

But wasn’t that even sadder? Compared to this lifetime—when he still made it back to her every night, even if only because she couldn’t sleep without him—back then he might never have rested at all.

No one would have been there to ease his pain when he was ill, or to comfort him when he was worn out from fighting off enemies who tried to breach the palace.

No wonder his face had always carried such fury. It wasn’t only because he had no way to release his pent-up desire, but it was also because he had no home to return to, or went to someone he loved to quiet his restless mind.

The more she thought about it, the more Primrose felt tears sting her eyes. No, it had to be because of her pregnancy! People often said expectant mothers cried more easily and got angry over the smallest things.

But still, how could she not feel heartache every time she remembered what her husband had gone through in the past?

Once she saw him again, Primrose swore she would shower him with love, spoil him endlessly, and pamper him until he was utterly rotten with it!

“You really are cursed with terrible luck, aren’t you, Edmund?” Leofric let out a laugh as the two of them fought off the werewolves prowling the palace hallway.

The corridor was too narrow for either of them to shift into wolf form. In a way, it was better. If they had, the aftermath would have been a blood-soaked massacre, and Edmund refused to let his wife witness that kind of horror.

“You fall ill once, and then suddenly—bam! The Blackpeak Pack infiltrates the palace.” Leofric kicked aside a werewolf that tried to sink its teeth into his arm. He clicked his tongue in annoyance. “You look human now, so fight like a human! No biting!”

Edmund didn’t bother to answer. His focus was fixed on cutting down the invaders as quickly as possible, so he could return to Primrose and pour his magic into her while she slept.

“Don’t you think this is a little strange?” Leofric’s voice was still playful, but the smile had disappeared from his face. “I know bad luck follows you, but this is the second time something like this has happened. Once might be a coincidence, but twice? Come on, only a fool would think it’s just bad luck.”
