Lydia burst into laughter, suddenly and violently, it was so aggressively obnoxious that Carl removed the headset just to see what was happening. “Oh god! HAHAHA! I needed that… Aww, you two need to find a house and sign a contract to complete it. Klaire, I can’t believe his system is literally trying to get you two hitched.” Lydia continued to laugh, Carl and Klaire just sighed and blushed.

Carl then started to return the headset but Lydia stopped as abruptly as she started and told him not to. “I think we need to wait until tomorrow. Your mums should all be present as we go through this hilarious system, all three of them. I’ll cook some food and let Leanna know she’s having guests for a while, you two have another week before the classes resume anyway.”

“Auntie Lydia, can we go to Carl’s room? we need to speak in private.” Klaire asked, trying to sound sweet and innocent.

“Phrasing dear, I can smell him yearning from here. Carl, you know the drill.”

“Yes, Lydia… Squidge consider yourself ordered not to let us do anymore than hold hands, a single two second kiss whilst standing and a foot away from the bed and should we lay down, then you are authorised to use violence to make sure we don’t touch at all. ’Of course Dad, it hasn’t been released since they let you update the terms. Now can you tell Great-Auntie Lydia to give me a check over too. I feel strange and it’s better to be safe, but I think I’m just tired.’

“He said, he’s been on that job for years, consider me bit if I try anything, now tell her to come snuggle me because I feel poorly.” Carl said, ignoring the telepathic protests as he, Carl and Klaire retired to his room for the private chat whilst Lydia prepped some food.

The door hissed closed behind them. “Carl, I need you to know. This does sound like marriage and I’m happy, but also scared. I want to ask Mum to put me through the howling, I need to be stronger, fast. Can you wait for me for two months after we graduate.”

“Klaire, isn’t that like really dangerous and you have to do it alone? Of course I can and will wait, but why do something like that? I thought it was an optional thing.” Carl asked, concerned.

“I keep hearing the phantom voice of that man you described, it terrifies me. He called you his or something, I’m almost certain we will see him again and I don’t want to be frozen in place when he pops up next.”

“I do-”

“Honestly! The nerve! Calling you his… You’re mine! Not gonna let some jumped up realm crossing old man try and take you…” She grumbled, growing increasingly angry.

“Don’t lie, He brought us back from the dead like it was nothing, I feel the same. Knowing there are beings like that is terrifying, so if doing this is what it takes to make you feel safer then do it. I was just going to say you aren’t going alone… Or empty handed if you want to hear me out.”

“I have to do it alone though.”

“No, not at all, pets can accompany you. I want to make you a member of my household and send the new one with you… Not Squidge, don’t need you wrapping him round your finger anymore.”

“You’ll really send the second pet with me? What will it be?”

“Well, when Danielle gets here tomorrow, why don’t we ask her what might help, we can also ask the three of them for advice on contract terms so we don’t feel trapped and avoid any easily broken Contractual obligations. Also, of course I’ll send a pet with you, you aren’t the only one who is terrified of that man.”

Klaire leaned in and kissed him, then Carl yelped two seconds later as Squidge bit him and the pneumatic hiss of the door followed that.

“Smells like lust and depravity in here so you two are done. Too early in the day for all that. Good boy Squidge, we’ll get you looked over when we are all full.” As if by magic, Carl and Klaire were abandoned by their own “child” in favour of his actual favourite.

They ate and then, as promised, Lydia began Squidge’s exam, then she sighed and asked Carl if he had looked at Squidge’s stats since the level up. “Err, no, been distracted since and now I can hear his thoughts, I figured he’d tell me anything he wanted me to know. Wait, Squidge can you see your own stats?”

’No, I kept trying to when I had growth spurts, but it never appeared.’ Squidge explained with a hint of annoyance at being less knowledgeable of his own abilities than Carl.

“Oh damn, sorry pal, just assumed, my bad. Let me have a peek for you.” Carl rambled as he petted him, before slowly coming to a halt.
