As Klaire looked at the numbers in front of her, she felt detached from all she had known, suddenly able to empathise with how Gillian must have felt no longer being a Lycan. Not only that, but just like him, she didn’t have time to properly process it in the middle of a battle.
As she let the system fade out of her vision, she found herself face to face with Lillim, who was elated to be as such with someone she considered a worthy test of her new power.
“I never would have dreamed that one of your generation would be the one to test my new power, but I am happy to see fresh blood amongst the upper ranks of existence…” Lillim looked about at things not present, just as she frequently used to, but now she did it to laugh at the faces of those who were watching. “…Existence is in an uproar at the birth of two new apex entities Klaire, but will we be the only ones, or will we usher in this new era with an entire pantheon?”
As Lillim bantered Klaire disappeared from where she had been and returned to human form before kissing Kyubi and then disappearing and reappearing to kiss Carl. “We will absolutely be an entirely new pantheon, but before we do so, we need to bring you back to your senses so we can trust you to keep the immortals in line.”
“Ugh, so trite. Cease your focusing on future affairs and enjoy the moment! Are you not thrilled? You can have a baby now whenever you choose and raise it completely unaided, is it not worth enjoying that?”
“I suppose…” Klaire started laughing. “…I know they say you are what you eat, but eating a mother to be one was not what I thought that meant.”
Lillim and Klaire looked at each other for a silent moment after, then both started laughing, then as quickly as they had started it stopped as Klaire punched her in her left middle and lower arms, then immediately followed up with a punch to the top and middle right shoulders.
“I thought we were having a moment…” Lillim said before ranting.
“We were, but then I realised that if you think I’m bringing a child into this world whilst their great-grandmother is a rejuvenated battle-junkie you’re insane.”
“…Says the recovering divinity junkie, or grandson junkie, however you identify your vice.”
“Fifty-fifty.”
— After Klaire Returned To Lillim—
As Klaire disappeared, Kyubi appeared when Lillim was distracted and kissed him too. “Hey, I’m not exactly complaining, but this doesn’t seem like the best time to be kissing.”
“Idiot. I love you, but not enough to waste time in a fight. Oh right, you don’t have a system or experience…” Kyubi looked back towards Lillim and Klaire to confirm they were distracted. “…She kissed us to grant her blessing of devotion and I kissed you to complete the circuit.”
“Oh, romantic…” Kyubi grabbed his head with both hands. “…Right, sorry, listening.”
“I need you to use your new understanding of divinity to finish analysing Tsukuyomi’s divinity and bestow me with every bit of it, I’m only a seven star but if you magnify it with all your divinity it might be enough to bridge the gap.”
“Got it. I’ll try and help you ascend, but I even with Klaire’s I don’t have any understanding of more complex divinity constructs.”
Kyubi looked back at Klaire and Lillim in time to see Klaire land two heavy attacks. “Lillim’s still got far too great an experience advantage. She’s using their chat to assess Klaire, so if you need something to analyse before things get bad use Ishtar’s blessing within me.”
Carl looked over to Lillim and Klaire and could see how right she was, the habit Lillim had of her claws dancing in anticipation of a delayed exchange had begun showing itself and it was clear that even Klaire was starting to feel the pressure.
With no other choice, Carl used his training with Nergal to isolate the unique divinity signature of the Mesopotamian pantheon and then extracted the blessing, quickly discovering that complex was a gross misnomer.
It was interwoven into every aspect of Kyubi’s existence on the layers of mind, body and soul, but twice over as if to specifically keep Kyubi’s natural Kitsune state and her variant fallen fox state both independent and unified at the same time.
“I hate to say it, but that woman is incredibly skilled at what she does…” Carl’s hands glowed and the countless interwoven threads that were the blessing, disappeared. “…Luckily, I’m now just as good…”
As he began deconstructing Tsukuyomi’s intrinsic existential divinity, he processed it directly with what he extracted from Ishtar’s blessing and into an all new blessing. “Kyubi, personally I love your more wild side and so does Klaire and strangely Majesty when she first mentioned it, but it’s your choice…”
“You knew!? Wait…”
“Yeah, I told her to respect your privacy afterwards and Klaire and I have been letting you wait for when you were ready to talk, but we’re out of time. Is it a part of yourself you wish me to remove or keep?”
“Wha-…” Kyubi became flustered and annoyed, but knew from the way Carl hadn’t stopped working he needed the answer immediately. “…Keep, I want to keep it, I don’t know why but I think it represents a significant part of who I was.”
“Then stay it sha-”
“…But make it tidier, like my human form but covered in nice fur.”
“Furry-mode, got it.”
“Why do I get the feeling that was a weird thing to say?”
“Don’t worry about it, but can you get a few pics of yourself in adult Kitsune form? The others will never forgive me if I let them miss how adorable you are like this.”
“Carl! Grr, fine.”
As Carl finished up the blessing, alongside Kyubi taking a few images in rushed and awkward poses, only one thought was going through Carl’s mind. ’I am so sorry Kyubi, I don’t know how to tell you I was joking.’
As he did his best to put that thought aside and focus, he lost track of how much divinity he had actually poured into the renewed blessing and realised it had become something akin to divinity based weapon of mass destruction that they were worried Alysse would be the one to create.
“Okay, I think I might have made this a bit more overpowered than I had intended. I’m not even sure it’s safe to bestow.”
“Then bless me somewhere fun in case you have to kiss it better afterwards, but do it quickly so I can make sure Klaire’s still alive to help you!” Kyubi didn’t actually wait for him to grant it, instead she stole the blessing, as she jumped into carl and embraced him.
As the blessing entered her, it burned intensely, so much so that she too lost her system as though simply refusing to tolerate the presence of anything it deemed an impurity in Carl’s design.
The pain was intense, more like she was being ripped apart and woven back together, but it made her happy at the same time, the simile she considered giving her hope that she might be able to empathise with Klaire’s experience during her howling.
Her body cycled through each form and aura burst from her in intense waves made Carl feel like his hair was being singed off.
It was actually the case that Carl suffered more during the experience in terms of lasting damage since he had to endure the burning heat she exuded whilst being pummeled at point blank range by her solid aura emissions and had several cracked bones by the end.
“I feel incredible!” Kyubi announced as the painful bit passed.
“I’m glad…” Carl coughed whilst holding his cracked ribs with his just as cracked arms. “…Now go help Klaire, I can’t move just yet, but I’ll be along shortly.”
Kyubi gave a quick disapproving shake of her head then went over to Klaire, leaving Carl to wonder how much trouble he was going to be in later. It was a matter far from Kyubi’s mind however as she arrived just in time to interrupt Lillim at the moment she attacked.
Lillim grunted as Kyubi span and planted her heel in Lillim’s shoulder, driving her into the ground with the gut-wrenching crack of her bones shattering, paired with the we splatting as they pierced her skin.
“I made it, no thanks to Carl whining about about a few cracked ribs.”
“Don’t be stupid fox, he had you covered by a sensory distortion aura barrier until you connected…” Lillim groaned and stood up, then examined her shoulder and sighed. “…I surrender. You had enough strength to knock me back to my senses it seems. Save the proper demonstration for what comes next.”
Kyubi and Klaire, who had been preparing for the fight of their lives, struggled to contain the energy that had been building in them in anticipation of what was sure to be the fight of their lives.
As they both growled, Carl chuckled from a distance and walked over. “Yeah, kind of figured that’s how it was going to play out, the way Grandma was delaying suddenly made me realise that she us to force another ascension.”
“Indeed. The moment of imminent death is the best time for a breakthrough.” Lillim chuckled to herself.
“She was also getting annoyed with watching her daughters drop like flies.” Equinox admitted as he approached timidly in light of his failure.
“Yeah that adds up…” Klaire sighed, failing to diffuse the built up energy.
“Oh good grief girl, how is it you struggle to control your battle appetite more than me? Kyubi, Carl, take her and go help her burn it off and just remember to wait until we’re finished before you start making babies.”
“Grandma, stop. She can control herself better than that.”
“Carl, you are a coward. Your significant others gain enough strength to accidentally crush you and all of a sudden you won’t satisfy them. Fine! If you won’t disappear and start working on my biological great-grandchildren like indulgent youths we may as well have an award ceremony…”
Before anyone even knew what was happening, the kids had been ushered back and Lillim was giving a very sincere and grovelling apology to little Raziel whilst everyone watch with intense disgust upon realising she had only been acting to try and force Klaire to intervene.
“…Oh please! It’s not like I didn’t warn her. Who do you think suggested she interfere in the first place?”
She soon realised that wasn’t enough to get off the hook and took a combo attack from the other newly ascended ten-stars. “We don’t care what the reason, don’t even pretend to target our little girl again! And you Raziel, should be far too used to your sister’s antics to fall for Lillim’s!” Klaire yelled incredulously, genuinely perplexed by what could sway their most trustworthy child.
“I’m sorry Mums, she said that if I was a brave girl she would help you get stronger…and…”
“And?” Klaire interrupted, in no mood to be drawn out for dramatic effect.
“Give us all cookies and juice…” Raziel admitted in defeat.
“Okay, new rule. Everyone needs to stop bribing our children with cookies…” Kyubi then turned to the kids. “…Why are you three always acting like they are treasures anyway? They are readily available in the damn cupboard!”
“We can’t reach the cupboard and Ki-ko is strangely against the idea of climbing on or flying above the counter tops.” Tiamutael finished, looking accusingly at the sister that is strangely not to blame for once.
“I think we should just get this award ceremony underway so we can teach the kids what real cookie withdrawal is.” Klaire glared at all of them.
“Fine, whatever…
Well, the first award definitely goes to Equinox. Despite the significant power gap, he was able to keep me occupied longer than anyone in a substantial time…”
“Thank you Lady Lillim, you honour my pitiful efforts. Though I should take this opportunity to reveal the truth of myself as Lillim came to know it…”
As Equinox explained the truth of himself and how he had adopted an entirely different nature as the means of fulfilling his duty to act as true entity of council and growth for Carl. It became quickly apparent why he had been so quiet in the beginning and rarely actually present unless needed.
“Equinox, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to put you through all that…” Carl was clearly guilty and sincerely apologetic, but the fact he no longer cried or let a little failure completely put him out of action, made Equinox incredibly proud of much his creator had grown. “…Thanks for not telling me what I really was as well, I never would have forgiven you for dropping the bombshell back then.”
“You honour me, but being what you needed to be was simply my primary duty, until the young master and mistress’ came into being and I realised the true reason you need one such as I.”
“Yeah and we cannot thank you enough for teaching them how to utilise multiple laws and balancing them with their personalities. Who knows how they would have turned out if they only had Kyubi as a multi-user example? We could have had Tiamutael acting like a fox-spirit.”
It was a sentiment that even had Kyubi herself nervous, given the powers that he possessed, if he was as mischievous as his sister and not merely an accomplice, their lives would have been more chaotic than they ever could have coped with.
“Well, moving along and on the note of fox-spirits…
The second award has to go for most well thought out battle to little Kitsunoko. Had she not foreseen Juliana’s desire to measure their growth and planned accordingly, they could have all been in considerable trouble.”
“Thank you Gran-Granny Lillim, but it wasn’t really well thought out. Auntie Juliana could have broken my wrist for real, or even my skull, I was reckless and didn’t have enough faith in my copies.”
“True, but you are acknowledging that now and growing everyday.”
“Ugh, fine, but I don’t like being praised for imperfections.”
“Next up…
The MVP was most certainly Raziel. If she hadn’t retired of her own volition, then she would have undoubtedly brought an end to all but the most powerful of my daughters. The abilities she will one day possess could probably rob an Aspect of their sense of their parent law.”
“Gran-Granny Lillim, I don’t think I ever want to do something like that, because that means that I’m not friends with them.”
“Yes dear. Well then Gran-Granny Lillim, as Ki-ko dubbed me on a whim, will have to show them the error of their ways in your stead my little angel.
Next award goes to Myself, Klaire and Kyubi, for most significant ascension in a few millennia.
Finally, the award for biggest personal growth, goes soundly to every single one of my daughters. I am more proud as a mother today than I have been since my eldest daughter was born.
Now, rest well all of you and prepare, you will all have battles to fight in the coming days. Of course I don’t mean you ki-”
“Thanks for that, but the kids have shown that as long as bribes aren’t involved, they can make reasonable decisions for themselves and we are going to neutralise the bribes by putting the cookies and juice in a lower cupboard.”
===Message From The Author===
Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the story as much I’m enjoying making it.
I will be taking a break for a bit to make sure the next act goes a lot more smoothly from start to finish without the growing pains of this one.
I hope you all come back…
The war is about to begin!
