Chapter 119: The Tower
The corridor was dimly lit with candles, a step away from every modern discovery, from bulbs, to lamps and torches, It was just a line of candles strapped to the wall.
Makun walked looking from left to right, trying to make as little noise as possible, prepared to snap someone’s neck at any sign of a presence in the corridor.
By now, after the frequency shift, he had deduced that the interior of what on the outside seemed to be a chalet was very large, the corridor was tiny, but long and on each side from time to time he could see doors, that looked different from anything he had seen beforehand, Instead of being squared, they were circular, metallic and had a line in the middle, to split open at any given moment.
He had no idea what was in those doors, but it felt unsettling, he was not used to this.
He wanted to check them out, however, the particles he had been following ever since he entered Sam Houston National Forest prompted him to move forward.
Tap! Tap!
As such Makun slowly advanced, trying to make as little noise as possible, trying not to alert whatever was behind those doors.
Chatter! Chatter!
Makun paused, he could hear noises from one of those doors, he charged his Ashe, while looking as the metal door slowly split in half, opening.
Gronk!
The doors opened, the sound similar to that of industrial doors that are difficult to move.
“What do we have going on today?” Makun heard a voice that sounded like one of a mature lady, in her fifties come from where the door had opened.
It was followed by steps and from those steps, he knew two people had come, but this was different, he felt something from them.
Practitioners.
Flash!
He sprinted and reached the door in seconds, fist charging out.
BANG!
His punch landed, propelling a chubby lady throughout the corridor.
She fainted.
“Madame!” The man following behind her shouted in a hurry.
Shing! Slash!
He drew a sword from out of nowhere and slashed at Makun, his slash precise and sharp.
Fwooop!
Makun took a side step, dodging the sword strike and letting it hit the wall that stood behind it.
Grab! He grabbed onto it, and crushed it with his bare hand.
The young red-haired man’s eyes opened wide as he saw his sword being crushed, however,
BANG!
before he could react, a punch propelled him through the corridor to where the Madame had been thrown earlier, he too fainted.
Makun sprinted to where he had punched them, and quickly scanned their body, he first looked at the young guy, second-grade initiate, He had known it.
The Ashe he could feel from the young man was a generic warrior Ashe, with no specific subroute attached to it yet, and the quantity of it was little, while his reflexes were slow and Makun could tell he had not dived deep into the warrior memories given by the deep.
He then looked at the Madame, she was a third-grade initiate, but she was no warrior, else she would not have been so helpless.
She was no seer, because she might have seen the danger, she was no scholar, nor was she a ruler.
She seemed to be a merchant route practitioner, and the young man acted as her guard.
Interesting! Makun thought, But why such a weak guard?
If he was a merchant, one of the third grade, he would surely hire someone stronger than he was, unless she did not have too much of a choice in the first place.
That was something he could figure out later, first he had to find out what this place was and why is it that they came here.
He could not kill these people, He had killed, and had decided to feel no remorse from it, when he felt it to be useful, but he was not merciless, and he would not kill people on a whim, however he had to incapacitate them in such a way that they could not obstruct his way later.
He inserted some of his Ashe into them, making sure to keep them in enough pain for their body to protect them by keeping them unconscious.
Makun moved on, he had to see what this place was, he followed the particles and it brought him to the end of the corridors.
There, the tiny hall expanded into something bigger, but that was not what caught his attention, no, it was the stairs, a tiny set of stairs went down, while a far larger one went up.
It was covered with red carpets and golden lines.
Makun closed his eyes, feeling his Ashe, feeling the surrounding particles, then he climbed.
He climbed and climbed, wondering why the stairs were this long.
Why does it feel like a tower with multiple levels.
By now he realised Mr. Jones had probably heard Barry’s gunshot because he was at the entrance, It would not have mattered if he had killed those guys without stealth.
At some point, Makun saw a corridor sprout from the left of the stairs, the stairs continued, however he felt attracted to the second floor for some reason.
Other than that, he was wondering why he had not yet seen anyone else other than those two that came out of the door, where were Mr. and Mrs. Jones, where were the owners of the different cars he saw outside.
Surely something was happening.
He slowly advanced throughout the corridor of the second floor silencing his steps as much as he could. As he advanced, he heard noises coming from one of the doors at the end of the corridor, he walked to that door, stuck to the wall and listened.
“Today, is the day our brothers and sisters will see light.” The voice paused. “Today, they shall discover the truth of the world, They shall abandon flesh, they shall abandon the physical, and edify themselves.”
“Oh! Brothers and sisters, you who seek light, you who seek truth, come and kneel.”
Makun closed his eyes, this voice, it was not just a voice, it carried something within it, it had the ability to shift someone’s mood, to bring them into endless illusion, to hypnotise people, no normal voice could do it.
Ashe! He felt it in that voice, he knew there was another practitioner here, and his Ashe was of higher quality than the young man and the Madame.
A ritual! Makun determined.
