Chapter 26: Questioning
KNOCK!
KNOCK!
Zorak was interrupted by someone knocking on the door.
He turned to look at Zuri. She was as surprised as him.
She had no other meetings today except for him. He could tell. But he had to make sure.
“Were you waiting for someone?” he asked. His voice was calm. Always confident.
Zuri shook her head.
She had cleared today’s schedule after her reading yesterday. She read danger was coming. She wasn’t sure from whom it was coming, so she couldn’t accept just anyone in her house.
But deep in her heart, she knew it was related to that guy, Makun. The one she consulted last time.
This was the first time she actively saw danger in her readings. And it just happened to be after meeting that plague.
Zorak nodded.
He had a feeling this was what she spoke about.
“Stay back,” he said.
He double-tapped twice on his frontal lobe, activating his Sight. Then he threw a glance at the door.
He could feel two Source presences standing in front of the door. One calm. The other more erratic.
They were mystics. Practitioners. And they had dealings with Zuri, it seemed.
“Let’s open the door for now,” he said to Zuri.
Zorak was huge. Colossal. But quite calculated.
He knew nothing of the people outside. He could tell by their presence that they were quite powerful. Attacking with no reason was stupid.
Maybe they were new in town and needed something. They probably were looking for a mystic circle.
He had to be sure of their intention before attacking.
Zuri nodded. Even though, if she was alone, she would’ve chosen otherwise. Her cautious nature asked that of her.
Zorak slowly opened the door to reveal the presence of two individuals in front of the apartment.
One was tall, Lean, Blonde and beautiful.
The other was a petite brunette with tattoos.
“Can we help you?” Zorak asked.
Bol looked around. At the place. At Zorak. Then at Zuri.
“Are you the owner of this place?” Bol asked. His gaze fixed on Zorak. He could feel this man was not simple.
Zorak looked at Zuri, then at Bol. “Yes, I own this place. How can I help?”
His voice was calm.
“We are new in town and are looking for someone,” Bol said. “We figured information was here. Can you help us?”
The bird lesser spirit had traced Makun’s signature before its disappearance and led them to Zuri. Just before going back home to commit suicide. Just before meeting the Presence. Makun came here to meet Zuri for information.
At that time, his signature was fully intact. The lesser spirit could trace it. And after arriving here and feeling the energy radiating from the huge man at the door, Bol had a feeling this place was a trigger for the signature disappearance.
“Who is it you are looking for?” Zorak asked, while glancing at Zuri.
It seemed they were searching for someone who came here.
“We don’t really know. Hmm.” Bol paused. “Did someone come here on Friday in the morning?”
Bol had no information on how Makun looked. But they knew the signature disappeared on Friday at midday. That was a good clue to figure when he came here.
Zorak turned to Zuri. “Did you meet someone on Friday at midday?”
Zuri was conflicted.
If she said yes, then she was going to get dragged even deeper. If she said no, were they going to believe her?
How did they even figure out that Makun guy came here?
She decided. Tell the truth. But not everything.
“Yes,” she said. “I had a man come here on Friday morning. Quite distressed. He needed readings. But I could not. I shooed him away.”
Zuri mentioned nothing about the reading. She wasn’t sure how those two were going to react. Better not tell everything.
Bol looked at her. His eyebrow raised.
Shooed him away?
The lesser spirit wanted to go in, though. This meant he was inside. He wasn’t shooed away.
She’s lying, he concluded.
“Seems we can’t help you further,” Zorak said while closing the door. “Ask around. Maybe you’re going to find him.”
The door never closed.
Bol had placed his foot, stopping it from closing.
“We’re not done here,” he said.
Cheryl smiled like a psycho on the side.
Zorak’s hand moved.
Fast.
He grabbed Bol’s wrist and yanked him forward. Bol stumbled but didn’t fall. He twisted free and stepped back, hands raised.
“Easy,” Bol said. His voice was still calm. “We’re not here to fight.”
“Then move your foot,” Zorak said.
Cheryl giggled. She leaned against the doorframe, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. Her doll hung from her other hand.
“He’s strong,” she said. “I like him.”
Bol ignored her. His eyes stayed on Zorak.
“We’re looking for someone,” Bol said. “You know who. We know he was here. We know his signature disappeared after he left this place.”
Zorak didn’t move. His body filled the doorway. A wall of muscle and scars.
“And?” Zorak asked.
“And we need to know where he went.”
“She already told you. She turned him away.”
“She’s lying.”
Bol looked straight at Zuri who stood behind Zorak, arms crossed, face pale.
“Zuri…” Zorak Questioned.
“I shooed him away” she reaffirmed.
Bol took a step closer. His voice dropped lower. “We traced him here. Inside. Not at the door, Inside.”
He pointed past Zorak, toward the room where Zuri did her readings. The table. The candles. The cards. The shells.
“He sat in that room,” Bol said. “He was here for sometime, and when he left, something happened to him.”
“Since you wanna lie, “Bol’s gaze sharpened “we have to get the information out of you.”
