Chapter 19: Signature
Makun sat, unbothered by the fight going on.
He was used to having these sort of things happen every time in his presence. People provoking him, insulting him, people fighting next to him. This was just another day for him.
He drank his beer and observed the show. Distraction was what he needed and this was just that, perfect distraction for him.
Once he finished his beer he was gonna go search for the homeless shelter to rest. He just woke up but still felt tired. It seemed the book absorbed more than a normal amount.
Makun looked at the ongoing fight.
The two men were throwing fists, violent, fast. One man, shorter with blonde hair but sturdy, went for the legs. A takedown was what he was aiming for, as it played better for his height. He couldn’t strike against the taller red haired man as he had reach advantage.
However.
BAM.
He received a knee to the jaw.
He fell, eyes open in shock. He did not expect this move from the man. Was the red hair an expert martial artist? He was not sure. He knew this guy Joe was just a farmer. When did he learn such stuff?
The shorter blonde guy sprawled on the floor and tried to get up. Joe sprang on him, fist ready.
“Why did you call me a liar, Shane?”
Joe started punching. Shane could not protect himself and got his face beat.
Bap. Bap. BAP.
The series of punches continued.
Splurt!
Blood spurted out of Shane.
However Joe did not stop. Fist pounding Shane’s face.
Makun looked at the fight happening next to him, troubled. If this continued wouldn’t he kill the other guy? Should he intervene, or should he mind his business?
He decided against intervening. It would not end in his favor so he should stay out of it.
However the more he looked at the fight the weirder it was. Why did it seem as if Joe had no control of himself?
Makun looked once more. This time he exerted his frontal lobe, making sure to use some of his newly gained ability. He had some difficulty since everything was taken by the book, however he still tried.
His head throbbed, painful. He was out of spiritual energy but was forcing for it.
Grunting his teeth he managed to not let out a grunt, and he looked at Joe again.
However, what he saw shocked him.
There was some dark type of energy around Joe. Eerie, very dark, surrounding him as if it had control of him. Makun felt as if that energy was the one lifting Joe’s hand and pounding on Shane.
He was baffled.
What was happening right now? Were they mystics?
No, that cannot be the case else he wouldn’t look so lifeless.
Is the mystic world so intertwined with our world that everything is related to that? That is true. But why him in particular?
Or.
Or.
Makun started looking around, searching. Is there someone here causing this? Playing with normal people?
He felt like that was the most logical answer.
If that was the case, then why were they next to him? Was he paranoid? Or did he observe right? Was someone sending him a message?
….
Out of the bar, a tall lanky beautiful blonde man appeared out of nowhere near a petite brunette with fair skin and a pentagram tattoo on her jaw.
She looked quite amused, smiling from ear to ear while giggling.
“Cheryl, you had your fun did you not?” the man said.
Cheryl turned with her creepy smile looking at him and said, “Yes I am having fun. What? Wanna end it?”
As she finished her sentence, the smile disappeared. Her eyes became cold, as if daring him to stop her from having fun.
“We should not attract attention, Cheryl. We are here for a mission.”
Cheryl had returned her gaze to the bar window, giggling again. “Yes we have a mission, yes, yes. But should we not move when we have information?”
The man sighed. “That’s what I went to search and got. I have the place where his signature last disappeared.”
“What did you find, Bol? Where did his signature disappear?”
Cheryl asked the question without looking at him. Her eyes were still fixed on the bar window. On the chaos inside.
Bol sighed.
They’d received a mission by the higher ups. Track a guy down in this old shabby Naija town. She did not know why the guy was so important. The higher ups did not even have any picture of him, as if they deliberately tried to avoid any contact with him.
However it seemed something happened and they lost trace of his signature.
Now they were searching for info on what happened. They were here to keep watch and report.
They were alerted on Friday night when the higher ups noticed something went wrong. It took them a day to travel from Nashville to Naija city, and they reached today afternoon.
Now their first task, mainly that of Bol, was to pinpoint the place where the signature disappeared. Which he did.
However while gone, Cheryl, who was a hazard, started doing what she did most. Cause trouble.
Using her skills, she took control of Joe and assaulted Shane, resulting in the terrible scene Makun was observing in the bar.
Bol sighed again. She liked causing trouble.
He pulled out his phone and went to the gallery.
“Stop what you are doing and come.”
Cheryl pouted. Looked through the window and reluctantly at Bol. She let go of the hard grip she had on the doll.
“Show me what you found already.”
That is how Bol pointed the phone towards her.
On the screen was a photo of an apartment building. Run down. Peeling paint. Cracked windows.
“Tomorrow, we go there.”
Cheryl leaned in, squinting at the photo. “That’s where the signature disappeared?”
“Last recorded location. Strong residual energy. Whatever happened, it happened there.”
Cheryl’s smile returned. Slow. Dangerous.
“Good. I was getting bored.”
Bol pocketed his phone. His expression stayed neutral, but his eyes flickered toward the bar entrance.
If Makun was here, he would have gasped.
The place they were going to go to was the place he just got evicted from.
