Chapter 84: Application
Makun had already defined the principle of a berserk, and he knew he was one. He also knew his Ashe was made of rage and chaos.
That meant, to advance on the mystic ladder he should deepen his understanding of the universe, his understanding of reality, and his understanding of life through rage and chaos.
As an initiate, he got an introduction to the warrior route, from basic movements, to how to affect reality, to which specific lens he had to follow.
To cross from Initiate to Apprentice, he had changed the basic warrior Ashe to a more specific one. This alone made him a true student of chaos and rage as he was a student of that.
Now as an apprentice, he had to apply.
What does application mean?
Makun thought back to Zuri. She was an Apprentice Seer, and worked as a seer. He had no idea about the different sub routes that came with being a seer but he knew her working as a seer gave her the opportunity to apply whatever she was.
She surely used her Ashe to perform her readings, and through that she surely had epiphanies.
Then there was Melissa. She was a Merchant Route Practitioner and was acting as a gambling master at Stone Bar. From the spiritual energy he felt from her, she was also an Apprentice route practitioner.
There had to be a correlation between everything. They were doing exactly what the book mentioned and that was application.
An initiate is taught. An Apprentice must understand what it means to learn through doing.
He remembered the words written in the book, and that led him to one question.
Should my everyday life, from me waking to me sleeping be related to my route?
Similar to Zuri and Melissa, should my job be related to my route?
Mystics were exposed to a whole other side of the world, a different side of reality. They were exposed to the veil, exposed to the Deep, exposed to Ashe.
But they were always connected to the normal world, the mundane world.
They had to work, eat, sleep, interact etc.
That was something they could not refute doing, that was a connection they could not throw away. This meant, to not lag behind in terms of mysticism, they had to make it so that their everyday life reflected their mystic path.
At this point Makun was sure that as a warrior, he had to fight.
That was his route, and how he was meant to understand reality. It did not matter what type of fighter he was. He could be a soldier, an athlete, a street fighter, a martial artist. It did not matter. Everything that mattered was that he fought.
If he fought he was sure he could apply his route, his comprehensions, the memories in his head and everything else. And similar to Zuri and Melissa he was going to be able to advance on his path as a warrior.
How about the stakes? If I am an MMA fighter and fight every day, I am applying whatever it is I need to apply. However if I am a soldier where the stakes are higher because of life and death situations, do I improve faster? Are my comprehensions sturdier?
He was not sure yet but had an inkling towards the fact that the higher the stakes, the better the results. Which meant warriors should search for extreme situations to be in.
This meant he could not just be an MMA fighter and improve. Because he would not be able to use his Ashe in the ring. First of all it would not be easy. Secondly, the Suppression Bureau would hunt anyone who tried something so foolish.
Ooh! Underground circles, the veil.
Makun came to a realisation. Despite everything he had experienced in just a few days, he was very new to this side of reality. New to the veil and its workings.
He had been introduced to the night market by Zuri and thought that was it. Then he had been in a dungeon after his initiation. He did not know how or why he was there.
Then he had been brought to Stone Bar by Jorg. There he saw what seemed to be an underground circle of rogue mystics, trading, gambling and doing things he had no idea about.
And at midnight today, he had been introduced to the concept and specificity of the Suppression Bureau, the branches, ideology…
This meant there was a whole ecosystem reserved to mystics. There surely were mystic combat sports, mystic wars.
Mystic animals? No way right?
Makun’s eyes widened. If his thoughts went this route where would it stop? Mystical creatures? Aliens? Mystical technology?
It did not stop. He could keep going if he wanted to, but he shook his head. He should not bother with that. He should focus on being an Apprentice.
He already knew his path forward. He knew he was going to join the MIO and from what Jorg had said, he could tell there were going to be fights.
During the question and answer session, he had asked Jorg to describe MIO in one word and Jorg had said active.
This meant there was always work for them, and work meant fights for field agents. So all the extrapolation he did about mystic underground fights or wars would not be of help to him right now.
He was going to get his fill in MIO.
Is this why people scramble to enter the Suppression Bureau? To get an opportunity to exercise their route?
That made sense. Yime had mentioned resources, payments, and protection. Who would not want that?
Ok, I am going to exercise my route in the Suppression Bureau as an MIO agent, but how should the application be?
His thought which seemed like a similar question to the very first one he had was totally different from it.
It was different in that, the original answer to the application was fighting, which in this case he considered as application. However how should he apply his route through fighting?
This linked back to the question he had last time. As a berserk warrior whose purpose was chaos and rage, how could he perfectly apply his route?
That was not something he could figure out right now despite the clues he got during his advancement from third grade initiate to Apprentice.
To overcome chaos, become more chaotic than the chaos that threatens you.
In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.
Sometimes you have to lose all you have to find out who you truly are.
He had kept those words in mind but was confused by what they meant, or how he was meant to use them.
Seems I am going to figure this out while applying my route. That is the way it should be.
“Pass the ball to me, pass it!”
Makun was pulled out from his thoughts by kids shouting. They were playing soccer which after 2026 became very popular in America.
As the kids were approaching, Makun hurried to place the book back into his bag.
He was not sure about how normal people interacted with mysticism. The only experience he had of normal people interacting with mysticism was a mom and daughter screaming after he killed their dog.
He was not sure what happened to them too.
I should head back home….home, Hope Rest I guess. He had thought of home instinctively.
Makun was tired. The day was bright outside but he needed rest. Despite all the quantity of Ashe he had absorbed till now, the book had found a way to get even more out of him.
Is it endless? He was not sure. He was going to question Yime once they met.
All he knew was that he needed rest, a lot of it. His plan was simple. Monday early in the morning he was going back to the VEB HQ, meet Yime and let her know he was going to join the MIO.
Then from there it was a new beginning for him. No more poverty, no more homelessness, no Mr. Okoye, or Marcus. He knew he was still going to be unlucky but that was something he was going to solve.
Speaking of Monday, what day is it today? Makun pulled his phone out of his pocket.
It was cracked and damaged beyond repair. He knew it was a miracle he had not lost it during the initiation at the park. He got it back from Celine when he was leaving.
Sunday 2 pm.
So many days have passed? Damn, did I lose consciousness that much?
He had underestimated the amount of time he had spent be it in the dungeon or the VEB hospital.
He drank the potion on Tuesday early in the morning, lost consciousness, then woke up in the afternoon after Celine took care of him.
He then went out with Jorg to Stone Bar, then after midnight he had fought with Zack York and lost consciousness. How many days did I even sleep? He was confused, but that did not change the fact that he had to sleep at Hope Rest Shelter today.
He pocketed his phone and stood up, leaving for Hope Rest Shelter.
