Chapter 68: Kill Him
The unconscious Elias lay where Zack had left him, chest rising and falling in shallow, labored breaths. He was alive but defenseless.
Makun was under a state he could not control yet.
He was full of chaotic information about destruction and felt like his only satisfaction might come from enacting destruction.
To him right now, destruction was everything.
That was why he started walking towards Elias. His Ashe chaotically spiraling around him. His eyes glowed as he raised his hand ready to strike Elias’s chest.
He aimed for his chest where his heart was, where his Route Core stayed.
His hand pulled back for the strike.
WHOOSH.
A fist landed across his face.
The impact was instant, absolutely brutal.
It was so brutal it snapped his head to the side, his whole body lifting off the ground. And for the second time that night, he was sent flying, hurtling through the air, slamming into the brick wall of the alley with a bone-rattling CRACK.
He crumpled to the ground, his vision spinning.
This time was different.
This time, it was not Zack.
It felt heavier, harder than Zack despite Zack’s hardening technique.
Makun could hear heavy footsteps echoing throughout the dark alley. He painfully turned his head to look at who had come.
He could see a massive six-foot-four giant, with broad shoulders and muscles all around his frame. Scars covered his entire body from his neck to his arms, all over his flesh.
However, the most distinctive mark he could see was a deep scar running under his left eye. It ran from his left eye to under his beard.
Compared to Zack, the presence this man exerted was leagues beyond. It was comparable to that of Jorg.
Makun had never seen this man before, but from the power he felt emanating from him, he could tell this was Zorak.
It definitely was him.
It could be no one else. They had been heading to where he was supposed to be from what Jorg said. That and his presence.
Only a man emanating such a suffocating presence could make other practitioners bend the knee.
Zorak had been at his second place at Post Office Street, chilling with Zuri.
After the incident that happened with Bol and Cheryl, he decided to lay low and had advised Zuri to do the same. It was not because he was scared of them, or because he thought he could not defeat them. No, far from that. It was to protect Zuri.
She was a precious resource. The more powerful she grew, the more useful she was.
Seers were a treasure. They could trace a reliable path of advancement, and he considered Zuri such a treasure.
She was going to help him move from Adept to Elite.
They were chilling, drinking some coffee, looking at TV while conversing when Zorak felt it. He felt a disturbance happening in the vicinity. He could tell something cracked. He had not wanted to rush as it had nothing to do with him. And he was not a member of the VEB to take care of this.
But after looking at Zuri, who had done some quick readings, he knew they had to come here.
She told him one of his men was in danger.
And although it did not seem so, Zorak was very protective of his belongings.
He had rushed, leaving Zuri behind to reach here. What did he see?
He saw Elias, the new guy who worked under the tutelage of Melissa, who was basically his money and resource printer, laid unconscious on the ground, and next to him was a Berserk Warrior who had lost the plot and wanted to take his life.
He had quickly equipped his golden brass knuckles and charged at the Berserk as quick as he could.
He had managed to hit him, thus saving the life of his underling.
That was how they reached the current situation.
Zorak looked from Elias to Makun. Berserks were a rare occurrence. He had never seen one. He had only read about them in some books he illegally smuggled.
It was bizarre seeing one in front of him.
He felt like if his Ashe was not a higher quality and quantity compared to the Berserk, it would have been corroded.
He turned to look at Zack. He saw the poor state the guy was in. One eye closed, never to open again. One arm missing.
This was a sorry sight. From the fluctuations in the air, he could tell the guy had been an Adept.
How did an Adept lose to this?
He thought, and could not come to a conclusion. Then he looked at Zack’s arm Makun had thrown on the floor, corroded beyond belief.
What should I do to him? He is dangerous.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
While he was deciding, he could hear someone coming from the distance. He knew who it was.
The person who arrived was a dark-skinned lady, her hair pulled back into a tight bun with sharp eyes that could see everything. She wore a short green t-shirt that exposed the tattoos etched on her forearms.
As soon as she arrived, she scanned the street, assessing the situation similar to what Zorak had done.
Then her eyes landed on Makun, who was still on the ground. He had sat up by now, his eyes glowing. He had tasted the full power punch of a third-grade Adept Warrior and it was not easy to recover from that.
“Y… Y… You!” she screamed as soon as she saw Makun.
Why was he here now? How did he manage to advance so fast? Why did he feel so dangerous? Why was he a Berserk?
All sorts of questions were churning in her head.
“Do you know him?” Zorak turned to Zuri, who had arrived by now, and listening to her scream, he concluded they knew each other.
Zuri snapped out of it.
“Yes, of course I know him,” she said, gritting her teeth. “He is the reason they came after us.”
“Oh!” Zorak’s eyes opened in surprise.
So those two guys were after this guy. Interesting.
By now, Makun had stood up, low growls in his mouth as he looked at Zorak menacingly, ready to jump on him.
“What should we do to him?” Zorak asked Zuri.
She likely knew which outcome was better.
Zuri looked at Makun deeply. The best solution was to leave him alone as he was a walking disaster, a walking plague, an unlucky bastard.
However, would the people who came after him always search for her? Were they always going to locate her?
She did not know how the other two had located her, but what she knew was that those organizations had means beyond her understanding.
And she knew they would not have any problem killing her if it meant having what they wanted.
Zuri did not consider herself a bad person. She even helped more than she harmed. However, if something acted as a weight pulling her down, she had to protect herself.
Even if it meant she was evil.
She had decided.
“Kill him.”
