Chapter 145: Chapter 139: The Third Girl in the Archaeology Department
August 10th.
Freshman registration day.
Master Sinclair personally escorted Aurora Sinclair to school.
Every year, Arcadian University’s freshman move-in day attracted a horde of media coverage. This year was especially noteworthy, as the university had managed to snag both the top and second-place scorers from the Kingsford college entrance exams, drawing even more attention from reporters.
When they arrived, Zeke Quincy had already been surrounded by journalists for some time. He was only let go when they spotted Master Sinclair.
The top scorer from Kingsford was a complete mystery—not a single piece of information about her could be found online. This piqued the reporters’ curiosity, and they all swarmed over, eager to catch a glimpse of this top student.
The moment they saw Aurora Sinclair’s face, they were stunned.
’She’s gorgeous!’
’The real deal—a genius beauty!’
The reporters at the front quickly shoved their microphones forward to interview her.
“You must be Aurora Sinclair, correct?”
Aurora Sinclair nodded. “Hello.”
“May I ask what you’re majoring in?”
“Archaeology.”
“Archaeology?” The reporter was so shocked he almost forgot his next question.
“Why did you choose to major in archaeology?”
“I like it.”
The reporters: …
’This genius beauty really is a conversation killer.’
Master Sinclair quickly picked up the conversation, chatting briefly with the reporters.
Leigh Miles took the opportunity to pull Aurora Sinclair and Titus Miles through the school gates, where they met up with Jean Quincy and Zeke Quincy.
Zeke Quincy was majoring in finance at the School of Business Administration, which was in a different direction from Aurora Sinclair’s Academy of History. So, at an intersection, he had to part ways with the main group.
But he had barely left when a few upperclassmen ran up to talk to them.
“Hey, are you freshmen here to register? I can show you the way! The Arcadian University campus is huge, it’s really easy to get lost.”
“Yeah, which college are you girls heading to? We’ll take you.”
“We’re here to help you with your luggage. Huh? Don’t you have any luggage?”
Since Aurora Sinclair lived right next to Arcadian University, she hadn’t applied for campus housing.
But the guys didn’t know that. They assumed someone had beaten them to it and snatched their job away. One of the lanky ones even turned and shouted at the people nearby, “Who took their luggage?”
They acted as if they had a monopoly on providing all campus services to the girls.
Aurora Sinclair suddenly remembered what Alvin Morgan had once told her: if a strange man tried to talk to her, she should press the button on her watch.
Soon, Alvin Morgan, who was in a meeting at the Martial Affairs Bureau, received a recording from Aurora Sinclair’s end.
Alvin Morgan listened for a moment, his expression darkening. “Is Benjamin Morgan at the university?”
Beta Morgan quickly replied, “Yes, he’s in the lab.”
“Have him go to the gate to pick up Aurora.”
***
The Arcadian University Physics Laboratory Building.
Benjamin Morgan was sitting in an office with Chester Greene, drinking tea and waiting for a call. Both of them had guessed that Alvin Morgan would ask them to go pick someone up.
A phone rang. Benjamin Morgan glanced at Chester Greene and directly answered the call.
“Pip, hurry to the school gate and get Aurora.”
The two men exchanged a look, gave a quick affirmative, and hung up.
“Quick, let’s go—”
Chester Greene’s expression changed. He immediately tore off his lab coat, ready to snatch his prize student.
The recent recruiting battle between the top universities had been nothing short of spectacular. Ever since Aurora Sinclair’s exam scores were released, universities in and around Kingsford had their eyes on her, calling Kingsford No. 1 High School one after another.
The president of Arcadian University had contacted him and Erin Archer, ordering them to do whatever it took to keep her at Arcadian.
Dean Hale from the Academy of Arts had slyly petitioned the president to reinstate Aurora Sinclair’s independent admissions art exam scores. This kept him and Erin Archer on pins and needles, forcing them to call Master Sinclair every day to plead their case.
They were only able to breathe a sigh of relief after Aurora Sinclair’s choice of Arcadian University was locked in.
Chester Greene immediately went to the president to open a second major application for Aurora Sinclair, only to find that other colleges had been even faster. They had all rushed to the president, wanting Aurora Sinclair to take a second major in their respective colleges.
In the end, the exasperated president told them all to bring her to him, and may the best man win.
“Let’s hurry, before those other guys snatch her away.”
Just then, Aurora Sinclair received a call from Benjamin Morgan.
Chester Greene’s booming voice came through the phone: “Aurora, wait right where you are! Don’t you dare go with anyone else!”
To go faster, Chester Greene had even borrowed a student’s electric scooter. But the moment he set off, several other professors who had been keeping an eye on the College of Physics also gave chase on bicycles.
“Mr. Greene, where are you off to in such a hurry?”
Chester Greene shot a glare at the people beside him and said unhappily, “None of your business. I’m going to get lunch…”
“The cafeteria isn’t in this direction, is it? Did Sinclair arrive?”
“Yeah, look at Mr. Greene. It’s gotta be that top scorer from the Sinclair family.”
Next, a “racing” scene unfolded on the Arcadian University campus. The contenders were all professors from various colleges, and all their vehicles had two wheels.
Left far behind in the dust, “contestant” Benjamin Morgan had no choice but to call Aurora Sinclair and tell her to take a different route to the Academy of History.
These professors had argued in the president’s office with a complete lack of decorum.
If they started arguing in front of Aurora Sinclair, tomorrow’s school paper headline was practically written.
[“Five Professors ’Brawl’ on the Street—What Is Their Motive?”]
Aurora Sinclair would become utterly famous!
***
The Academy of History was located on the easternmost side of Arcadian University, in the area with the richest cultural atmosphere. There was also a museum here that displayed numerous ancient artifacts, all of which had been excavated by archaeology students and their professors over the years. The registration point for the Archaeology Department was right at the museum’s entrance.
Jean Quincy was panting heavily, taking a long moment to catch her breath.
Just now, after Aurora Sinclair hung up the phone, she hadn’t said a word. She’d just scooped up Titus Miles, grabbed Jean, and taken off running in one direction at an incredible speed.
Those upperclassmen were probably scared stiff by their sudden action.
She swore that pace was even faster than her 800-meter sprint.
“Aurora, why… why were you running…?”
“Mr. C said I can’t let Mr. Greene see me.”
Jean Quincy: …
’Sis, was that any reason to run for your life?’
As the group bypassed one long line after another and headed for the museum entrance, the upperclassmen from the Archaeology Department were so excited they nearly welcomed them with bouquets of flowers.
Compared to the bustling scenes at other departments, very few students were registering here. One of the female upperclassmen, an excited look on her face, rushed over with a student roster and asked in pleasant surprise, “Are you all here to register?”
Jean Quincy pointed at Aurora Sinclair. “She is. We’re not.”
Hannah looked Aurora Sinclair up and down, her eyes growing brighter by the second. “Welcome, our newest student, to the Archaeology Department! You’re our third female member!”
Their Archaeology Department enrolled very few students each year. Other departments might have over 30 students in a single class, but they had fewer than 30 in an entire grade. Female students were even rarer. Currently, the whole department only had two, one of whom was a senior who was away doing fieldwork in the northwest with her advisor.
As the only female student currently on campus in the department, Hannah was nearly moved to tears at the sight of Aurora Sinclair.
She shoved a pen into Aurora Sinclair’s hand and pulled her to a table at the front to fill out a form.
In other departments, freshmen were all hunched over tables to write. But here, not only were there chairs and a small electric fan, but there was also a white styrofoam cooler on the side. A sign on it read “3 Yuan a Bottle.” Opening it revealed it was full of drinks and mineral water frozen solid.
“Pick whichever drink you like… it’s free for students in our department…”
Just then, a guy ran over from the nearby Department of Veridian Studies registration table, holding out his student card. “Give me two sodas, the super cold ones…”
“Six yuan. Thank you for your business—”
With a DING, the student card in the guy’s hand was swiped on a black machine, deducting 6 yuan.
Seeing the astonished looks on Jean Quincy and Leigh Miles’ faces, Hannah quickly explained, “Our department is small, so every year we take on part-time logistics work…”
But the guy holding the sodas teased, “Isn’t it because the archaeology budget is so small that you have to come out here and make some extra cash?”
“Get lost, get lost—”
Hannah glanced at Aurora Sinclair, embarrassed. “Don’t listen to his nonsense. Our college has plenty of funding. Earning extra cash is a time-honored tradition in our department. You’ll understand later…”
Aurora Sinclair nodded and handed her the completed form.
“Slender Gold script? Your calligraphy is excellent! The department head is definitely going to love you.”
As she spoke, a male student emerged from the museum pulling a small cart. He said with a simple-minded grin, “New student, here are your textbooks and tools for the academic year.”
Jean Quincy’s jaw nearly dropped. Half a cart full of books and shovels of various sizes?
’Are they planning to go dig up a tomb?’
