Chapter 31: The Shadow and The Demon
Walking into the forest, Kai could see as the moonlight illuminated everything around him, making it even more visible than the day.
In truth, it was not a secret that his body was abnormal, seeing as he was a Dungeon Boss after all.
His hearing, his sight, his reaction speed, his physical strength—everything was enhanced for him, whether he liked it or not.
As such, it would not be so much of a surprise if he was double-thinking the fact he could see at night.
But that was not the case this time.
The full moon was truly doing its thing, lighting up the entire place so well that not a single flicker of flames would be needed for one to see where they were going.
And since Kai had excellent sight to begin with, it was perfect.
In addition to that, as he moved, he kept on receiving more and more notifications from the dungeon back home.
[The Dungeon has rewarded you with an ability.]
[Textra:] You can control a special type of energy that shreds anything it touches.
[The Dungeon has rewarded you with an Authority.]
[Authority: Immortality.] As long as you have more than 0 subordinates present in your dungeon, you cannot die, as their life will be substituted if you choose.
Kai seemed rather distressed as he stared at the notification floating in the air.
’Immortality. As long as my subordinates are alive in the dungeon, I cannot fully die. Talk about the irony. Who is to say I am not already dead in the old world?’
Somehow, the thought made its way to his head again, even though he was trying his hardest not to bring it up.
’Forget that. I will have to question Carlotta later for what she is doing.’
Kai suddenly stopped in his tracks.
“Lyra.” He called out softly.
“Yes, my Lord, I can sense it too. There is a pet trying to surround us. Shall I take care of it? I believe this monster is not worth your trouble.”
’She is right. Most of the monsters here are made for newbies. This is a starter town after all; I doubt any monster they throw at us can prove to be a problem.’
“Sure. You can take care of it.”
As soon as he gave those orders, Lyra smiled a bit. She had been itching for a fight ever since they left the dungeon.
No, it was more like she was looking for something to pour all her frustration on.
She could still remember how disrespectfully the humans at the guild had laughed at her Master.
It was unacceptable. For her at the very least, it was a crime punishable by death.
“I shall dispose of this monster as quickly as I can.”
Her hands were clasped right in front of her as she began to take slow, steady steps forward, a calm look on her face as though she only wanted to speak with the monster.
When she was far to the front, where she could clearly sense the monster’s energy hiding in the canopy, she uttered words with a voice as cold as death.
“Stop with your childish play and come out right now. And do not think about running either, because I have decided today is the day you die.”
Kai tried to hold back his laugh.
He was used to Lyra sounding dramatic out of the blue, but it was way too different any time she wanted to fight or kill something. She sounded like a villain from a stage play.
Then, he noticed the monster.
It was a snake. A Giant Predator Snake.
Its long body could be seen moving behind the trees, slithering silently all around the place, having Kai and Lyra completely surrounded.
Kai also noticed the monster did not seem the least bit afraid of the two of them.
It showed its face, its dark scales glowing with mana as it hovered at the front, looking down at Lyra with its red reptilian eyes.
[Predator Snake.]
[HP: 100/100]
[Level: 17.]
“This is interesting. What is someone like you doing all the way in this dungeon? You are not a monster from around here. Return to your dungeon at once. You are of the race of a True Demon.”
The snake spoke. Its voice was raspy, vibrating through the air like a hiss.
Lyra frowned at the comment.
“You arrogant snake. Are you acting as though you do not see my Lord standing right there? How dare you disrespect him by speaking to me first?”
Her body slowly began to ooze with dark mana.
“I am aware he is a Boss, but to think a monster such as yourself would serve under a Shadow. Shadows are at the lower ranks of demons… I would expect—”
Phew!
Lyra slashed her hand to the side, sending a full force of wind that sliced the head of the snake in a matter of seconds.
Kai froze a bit, surprised at how quick Lyra was to end its life.
The snake’s body writhed on the ground for a good while as blood leaked from its neck before it finally succumbed to death and shattered like glass, its mana particles leaking into the air.
[Your summon Lyra has slayed a Predator Snake.]
[30 EXP has been granted.]
’Far lesser than what I would get if it was in my dungeon.’
In that moment, Lyra did not care about its dead body and instead turned around to look at Kai.
“I am sorry about that, my Lord. I should have killed the bastard before it even got the chance to say anything about you.”
“It is not your fault. The form I took heavily suppresses my power; I would expect a couple of people would underestimate me rather quickly. It is nothing to worry about.” Kai replied, looking at the dissipating mana.
’Poor guy, another victim of Lyra’s rage.’
“But still, how dare a monster from such a low-level dungeon dare speak ill about you. Tsk, if you would allow me, I will kill the Boss of this dungeon for not teaching its slaves manners.”
“Now now, let us not be hasty. I actually have one or two things I would like to discuss with the Boss before we do anything to it.”
“Speak? Is my Lord looking to have them under his rule? If that is the case, then I fully support that decision.”
“Hmm, yes, I guess you can say that.”
’I actually just wanted to make sure if there was anyone else that could be facing the same issues I am. For all I know, I might just not be the only one.’
“Let us keep going.”
