Chapter 89: When Dragons move.
“My Lord. Please, you do not need to be there in person. As your Head Maid, allow me to take a look at the room first and then report if it is truly worthy of your presence.”
Lucifer uttered, a worried look on her face as she followed closely behind Kai.
Walking down the hallway, the other maids, who were either stationed at different points or busy with their cleaning duties, all paused to look at Kai as he walked by, giggling like high school girls just from his presence.
It wasn’t like Kai had the intention of leaving the Throne Room just yet. He would much rather wait to see what the Duke was up to and then make his counter-move.
But ever since Kai had that very particular meeting with Lyra and Carlotta about putting them in charge of diplomatic relations with the Human Nation, he noticed they had been quite serious with whatever they were doing.
Too serious, in fact.
And now, he was hearing rumors about them constructing a new office for him and how they desperately wanted him to inspect it.
Kai, being curious, naturally wanted to see what it was about. As such, he had no choice but to leave his throne.
He sighed out loud.
“Lucy, I would much rather see this for myself first and then judge if it is worth it by my own standards. I do understand your care, but it would serve no purpose if I heard it from you and did not see it first with my own two eyes.”
Lucifer’s sad expression became even more evident.
“I apologize, my Lord. It is just that you recently woke up from your deep sleep. I really wanted you to rest a bit more before you began doing anything that would stress you.”
Kai listened, allowing her concern to hang in the air for a while as he walked.
“You are quite the amazing maid, Lucifer. Despite the fact that you understand the immense power I wield, you still choose to fret over me like a regular being. I would be lying if I said that didn’t make me happy.”
Though Kai didn’t look back once, he could sense Lucifer overheating behind him, almost breaking down as her cheeks flushed a deep crimson.
All she could manage were incoherent mumbles. Nothing audible left her mouth from that point on.
…
Following that, Kai finally made it to the room he was informed about.
Just like his Throne Room, this one was also isolated from the main residential areas.
It was located in a somewhat narrow hallway where two Skeleton Knights stood guard at the entrance, each of them strong enough to battle an average B-Rank adventurer.
After acknowledging the guards, Kai and Lucifer made their way into the room.
Upon entering, the first thing they noticed was Lyra at the far corner, using a rag to meticulously clean the surface of a large, mahogany table.
Towards the opposite side, Carlotta was there with a few other maids, wiping down the floor, chairs, and other accessories in the room with intense focus.
In truth, from where Kai stood, he was genuinely impressed by what he was seeing.
The room was almost as big as his Throne Room, but if he were to describe it, it would be far better to call it an Executive Office.
At the far end of the room was a massive desk with a single, high-backed chair behind it. Further to the front, two plush couches sat facing one another, furniture that was likely generated by the dungeon’s creation menu.
Bookshelves lined the walls, side tables held decorative artifacts, and a large window offered a panoramic view of the evolving Jaun Land. It was truly the best place for him to handle administrative work.
It took a moment, but the ladies finally picked up on Kai’s presence.
“My Lord!”
Lyra flung her rag to the side and immediately began to make her way towards Kai.
Carlotta did the same, the excitement on her face flaring up the moment her eyes landed on his form. The rest of the maids simply remained where they were, their heads bowed in respect.
“Lord Kai, what brings you here?” Carlotta asked, stopping her advance only a few inches away from him.
“I was told you were reconstructing yet another room in the dungeon. I came to have a look to know what it might be, and I must say, I am truly impressed.”
“Really, my Lord?!” Lyra leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with adoration. “I came up with the idea! After what you told us, I figured you would need a place to discuss the affairs of your people separate from the formal setting of the Throne Room. Hehe, I am glad you like it.”
Kai was indeed moved by how forward and giddy Lyra was, but he played it off well.
“You’ve outdone yourself. And I assume Carlotta is simply here to help as well?” He looked towards Carlotta, who immediately denied it.
“No! I was here because it was my idea to begin with! I would have built it first, but since she has higher administrative authority, she was able to steal the credit from you, my Lord!”
’More like she stole the initiative, but I doubt that even matters now.’
Kai suddenly placed his hands on both their heads, the most effective method for calming them down.
“You have both done well. This is truly a better fort to discuss political matters with my subordinates, as you have said. Good. I’ll be sure to put it to good use.”
Lyra and Carlotta settled instantly like purring cats, their cheeks red while staring at the ground and nodding their heads at his praise.
Lucifer, watching from the back, maintained her professional calmness. But deep down, if given the chance, she would without a doubt pick joining them just to have Kai pat her head as a reward.
Just as Kai was about to remove his hand, he heard Sanovere suddenly speak to him via telepathy.
(My Lord, am I disturbing you right now? I have news.)
“Not at all. You may speak.”
(As you wish. A few seconds ago, we received a high alert of multiple high-energy signatures heading towards the Nameless Dungeon. Upon visual confirmation, it was four Dragons, Level 350 and higher, flying right above our airspace.
I figured we could handle it without disturbing you, my Lord, and thus I sent Fanny to intercept. However… they simply turned and fled upon setting their eyes on her.)
Kai paused.
’Four Dragons? Don’t tell me…’
He glanced to the side, his expression hardening.
“Are you saying they retreated?”
(I would like to think so, my Lord, but I doubt that is the case. I have reasons to believe that the Dragons were under some kind of mental control, and that control broke upon seeing a True Dragon like Fanny. Their demeanor seemed fearful and erratic when they left. Almost like they were throwing a tantrum.)
’Interesting. I think I get the gist of what is happening. Dragons in this game are known to be Calamity Class, meaning they are strong enough to level an entire city. They are also destructive and destroy whatever is in their path.’
Kai narrowed his gaze.
’The fact they are moving in a group is also weird since they are territorial and lonesome creatures. Which means… they must be controlled by an external force. The Duke? That seems likely, seeing as I haven’t heard any move from him since the failed invasion.’
He finally made up his mind.
“I will be going now. You may finish up what you are doing here.”
“Wait, my Lord, let me—” Lyra started.
Shiiik!
Kai’s body disappeared in a blur of motion.
“…follow you.”
Lyra could not help but look a bit disappointed at his absence.
So much so that Carlotta took the opportunity to laugh at her, knowing she was trying to beg just so she could tag along.
…
Meanwhile, using the blessing from the dungeon, Kai was able to teleport from the office room all the way outside the dungeon entrance.
Where he stood, he could see some Skeleton Knights gathered in a defensive perimeter, while Fanny and Sanovere stood at the forefront, looking at the sky.
As soon as he touched the ground, all of the skeletons and vampires bowed their heads at his presence.
“Are the dragons far gone?” Kai asked, taking slow steps forward.
Sanovere lowered his head, alongside Fanny.
“The Dragons have gone towards Rambosa City. None of them branched toward another route, which probably means their target is in that city.”
“Dragons are wise but also ruthless and aggressive. If their main target, or rather, the source of their agitation, is in the city, then it is only natural that they would destroy everything in their path to get there.”
Kai pulled out his black mask and placed it right over his face.
Instantly, his form shifted. The horns receded, the demonic aura vanished, and he reverted back into his human persona.
Aron.
“I would like to stop that from happening.”
