Chapter 43: Josefina Andrea Lopez
Max frowned slightly after hearing that. He was clearly surprised. He hadn’t even bothered to ask who the UFC fighter was when he signed up. He had been too eager and rushed into it. That mistake was on him.
” The UFC fighter’s name is? ”
” She is Josefina Andrea Lopez, former UFC Featherweight title challenger. Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So you’re in good hands… with your physique. ”
The receptionist’s eyes lingered on Max’s body for a few seconds. Most people couldn’t tell how built he was under his loose clothes, but she worked at a high-end gym. She knew what she was looking at.
Hearing it was a woman, Max didn’t feel like he had much left to learn here. He already carried a heavyweight’s memories. And Tom Aspinall wasn’t some challenger. He was a champion. He stepped in, fought, and took the title.
“Sir, we’ve gifted you a few training clothes. They’re in your locker.”
The receptionist gestured for him to enter with both of her hands. Max, shaking his head, entered the gym using his new ID card. The locker room was just on his right-hand side. Max decided to continue wearing his shorts while he wore the Eternity Health Club’s tight sporty shirt.
When he finally reached where he was supposed to train, there were already many women present. They were all in their mid-late thirties. Max sighed quietly. He really should’ve checked earlier. The mat smelled new, while there were sandbags hanging almost everywhere.
Can’t believe I have to train with a bunch of bored rich moms.
Max stood a little apart, calm and straight, keeping to himself, but the ladies kept staring at him. Then a woman entered, as tall as Jennifer, but her body was jacked and packed with muscle. She wore black tights with a black sports bra. She looked like someone who wouldn’t tolerate any nonsense.
“Alright, ladies, we will do cardio first, then—eh? A boy?”
Josefina looked a bit shocked when she saw Max standing there. A small smile formed on her face, thinking he might be some little fan, but Max felt different. His posture, the quiet way he stood, the way his body was built—even she sensed a hint of danger from him.
Hearing a mid-twenties woman call him a boy felt childish to Max. She was barely older than him, yet she called him that. Even if he was younger, she could’ve shown some respect. Nearly ten ladies were watching him, or more like staring. Josefina with curiosity, while the rest looked at him with clear physical hunger.
Yeah, I don’t know what I should do. Should I just focus on their nice equipment and train alone?
“Hello, my name is Maximilian. I didn’t know this was a girls-only training session. I will go do my workout at the back. I promise I won’t disturb you guys.”
Max had to do something about this awkward situation. It was his mistake, so he would take the blame and the loss, even if it meant losing out on a trainer after paying.
“Oh, no, it’s surely not a girls-only session. Come over here, Max. Let’s see what you’re made of.”
Josefina laughed first. The ladies in her class giggled along with her. For a moment, Max felt like he was making some kind of mistake. Then Josefina, seeing how polite and composed he was, understood he was a genuine guy, not some pervert.
Max nodded and walked ahead. Josefina bounced lightly on her feet, surprisingly light for her build. Max was certain that even at his height, she could dropkick him straight in the face. Josefina tossed a pair of huge practice gloves at him while she slipped one on herself.
He put on the gloves and stood beside a sandbag. Josefina smiled, and suddenly Max felt like time slowed down. She didn’t say anything, but she moved. No warning. Her lead foot slid forward, and her body shot in like a spring releasing. Fast. Her fist snapped straight for his face. Max’s head tilted half an inch. He had already seen the punch coming, like it was in slow motion.
Her punch brushed past his cheek and cut through empty air. Josefina looked pretty surprised but didn’t slow down for even a second. Her shoulder rolled, and the next hook came heavier and faster, but Max leaned back slightly, and the glove smashed straight into the sandbag beside him.
He’s good. He can keep up with me?
She’s very good, too good, too fast.
The entire bag shook hard and scraped across the floor several feet with a loud screech. Chains rattled. A couple of the women nearby flinched and stepped back. That wasn’t something they were ready for or had signed up for.
I should make it more interesting for him.
I can learn many things from her. She’s a pro, alright.
Josefina smiled, her interest piqued, while Max smiled too, because his money wouldn’t be wasted at all. He had barely attended this class, and she was already teaching him so much.
Josefina stepped in again, light on her feet, circling him instead of standing still. A low kick smacked against his thigh, then two quick jabs snapped toward his face and chest. This time, a few landed clean.
*Thud**Thud*
Sharp and fast. Max barely felt them, like getting hit with sticks, but he noticed how hard they were to see. Her hands were quick. Too quick. By the time he reacted, the punch had already touched him.
Josefina kept pressing, throwing short combinations and stepping out immediately, testing his guard from different angles. She tagged his ribs, his shoulder, his stomach, never staying in front of him for long. Max followed her movements and started adjusting, leaning away, blocking, turning his body to keep her in front. The more she attacked, the faster he adapted. After a few exchanges, most of her punches started missing again.
The women around the room stopped moving completely. A few slowly backed away toward the wall. This wasn’t the light session they expected. The sounds were too loud now. Gloves hitting flesh. Feet scraping the floor. They never thought they were signing up for something this dangerous. Every one of them gulped in fear. If this was day one, they were dead.
Josefina narrowed her eyes. She tested him a few more times, changing rhythm, faking high and going low, stepping in twice, then pulling back. Max kept up with everything. His reflexes were ridiculous. Every time she thought she had caught him, he moved at the last second. It felt like he was reading her.
“Heh? You’re a fucking monster for a boy.”
“I am no boy. Call me Max.”
“Josefina, from Mexico.”
She smiled at Max, while Max took a few deep breaths, but a faint smile still hung on his lips. She was very interesting. For how hard she fought, her voice was surprisingly gentle and soft sounding, the most girly voice he had ever heard.
This time, instead of going straight at him, Josefina began circling wider and faster, almost gliding around him. Her footwork tightened, steps sharp and quick. She suddenly darted to his side and drove a short punch into his ribs before he could fully turn.
*Thud*
Another hit landed from his blind spot.
Then a low kick.
Max tried to pivot, but his larger frame slowed him down just enough. He dodged the first few, but the next ones slipped through. She was aiming exactly where he couldn’t react in time. The difference in size was obvious now. He could tank the hits easily, but he couldn’t rotate as fast as her.
So the punches kept landing.
*Thud* *Thud* *Thud*
Max didn’t back off. He simply kept smiling and tried to catch up with her speed, stepping harder, turning faster, refusing to give ground. Josefina was smiling too, clearly enjoying it, moving around him like a smaller predator testing a bigger one.
To the women watching, it didn’t look like training anymore. It looked like a real fight between a couple, like they were trying to make up with each other after a big fight.
…
“Ahahaha, they thought I would fight them like this too? Ahaha.”
Josefina laughed out loud, while Max just smiled. He was surprised as well when those young moms wanted to quit out of nowhere. Both of them had sparred for about twenty minutes straight. After that, Josefina mostly trained the class in basic steps.
“They were really scared. You did it out of nowhere, so their thought process is valid.”
Max pulled off his gym T-shirt. He was drenched in sweat. For the first time after getting this body, he had sweated this much. Seeing his build, Josefina stared openly.
“You want to try pro? I am certain you’ll do very well in that scene.”
“Nope. I am not interested in MMA. I want to make myself fit and strong, then save babies.”
Max smiled as he replied. He took the complimentary towel the gym provided. He was going to take a shower, then maybe have an early lunch or a second breakfast. He was hungry.
“Babies? What?”
“I am a student of Human Medicine at LMU, so yeah, I want to be a doctor, mainly a baby specialist, a pediatrician.”
Max smiled as he walked toward the washroom. Josefina followed along. She was sweating as well, her body dripping wet, but she didn’t seem to mind being in his presence. Max tried his best not to look at her body. He kept his eyes on her light brown eyes instead.
“So, you’re not only a good fighter but will also be a doctor? How old are you?”
“I am eighteen.”
“I am twenty-three; want to date me?”
