Chapter 50: Buying Four Laptops.
“Sir, what can I do for you today?”
The salesman, seeing the woman leave, smiled faintly. She had only been talking randomly and wasn’t planning to buy anything, just looking around and wasting his time.
“I need something powerful for my classes. I think I’ll go with your suggestion this time again. Didn’t research much.”
Max stated what he wanted calmly. The salesman nodded, then gestured for Max to follow him. Max moved to the side, then sat on a comfortable couch. In front of him was a small glass table.
“Sir, please wait here. I’ll bring the best I have. I know you don’t want something mediocre.”
When did I say that?
Max looked a bit confused when the salesman assumed he wanted something very high-end. He was here to buy something normal this time. Unlike last time, when he wanted the best phone, this time he just wanted something to learn with.
Oh well, I can have a good device too. I have money. Hehe.
Shaking his head with a quiet chuckle, Max leaned back and placed his helmet beside him. Being afraid of high prices felt unnecessary now. Money was the last thing he needed to worry about.
Soon the salesman returned with two boxes again. This time, one was from Apple and the other from MSI. Max looked forward calmly to whatever the salesman was trying to sell him.
“Sir, this one here is the MacBook Pro 16″. It comes with a Liquid Retina display, has the M4 Max chip, 128 gigs of RAM, and an 8TB SSD installed. I believe this one is the best possible match for you. The charge will last very long through long periods of classes.”
“What about this one?”
Max pointed at the large black MSI box. He understood all the references the salesman used. Although he had never owned a laptop, he had learned about them by watching videos. He preferred to stay prepared for university.
“This one here is the MSI Titan 18 HX AI, loaded with a 5090 GPU, 64 gigs of RAM, and a 6TB SSD. Peak performance, but I don’t think you will need it much if your goal is just to attend classes.”
The salesman opened the boxes and showed him the Titan. It was huge compared to the Mac, looked heavier and more solid. Pure black. Like a machine built for work and something more.
“Hmm, I’ll take both. Do you have this in silver color?”
Max couldn’t decide, so just like his phones, he chose to buy both. He would use the bulky, powerful one at home and take the slim Mac to university. Then he remembered Jennifer and Machina might need new laptops, so he should just gift them.
“Yes, of course, sir.”
“Alright. Same specs. Pack three Macs for me. One ash black like this, two silver, or some color a woman would like, and one MSI Titan.”
“Sir?”
The salesman couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He looked shocked. He knew Max was a spender, but not to this extent. He gestured for Max to wait a little, then hurried inside the employee-only section.
Sigh… I just love electronic gadgets. I can’t help myself after seeing one.
Although Max had always been a frugal person, his habits were slowly changing. He couldn’t ignore tech like this. And he was a millionaire anyway. The more he thought like this, the more his head nodded in quiet approval.
Oh… to level up the Palladium Card, I have to be extravagant.
Max finally found a reason to justify owning two laptops. Somewhere inside, the old orphanage kid in him still held him back from spending like this, but he didn’t notice that he was already being just as extravagant with Machina and Jennifer.
Soon the salesman returned with someone wearing a suit. The lady looked classy and friendly at a glance. She was a middle-aged woman. Seeing Max was a young man around her son’s age, she frowned a little but then remembered what she had seen on the parking lot security camera footage. The frown disappeared instantly, replaced with a polite smile.
“Hello, sir. I’ve heard from our employee here about your purchase, and we really appreciate you choosing MediaMarkt. I’d love to include a few things for free as a thank you: three 140W adapters and all the cables for your Macs, plus a spare 400W charger for your MSI laptop. I hope they come in handy.”
“Well then, thank you very much.”
Max accepted it with a calm nod. Hearing they were giving gifts for free, he was quietly impressed by their customer service. He glanced at the salesman with a small look of appreciation.
“Sir, how will you pay? Your total for the four laptops, including 19% VAT, is €31,271.”
“Card.”
“Card? O… Okay… Go fetch the payment terminal.”
The manager looked a bit shocked. Usually, even wealthy people didn’t carry this much credit limit on a card.
Max pulled out his wallet. He felt a little troubled too. He didn’t like using this eye-catching card everywhere, but his diamond-laced palladium card still didn’t have the bank transfer feature, so he didn’t really have a choice until he upgraded it.
The salesman returned with the payment terminal and looked at Max with clear hope in his eyes. The last time Max had paid, he had shown a shining credit card. It had been so amazing that the salesman had even gone home and told his wife a full story about it.
Max opened his wallet and calmly pulled out the card. His name caught the fluorescent lights and shone faintly, the letters forged with diamond. The VISA logo rested in the corner in gold, matching the clean, heavy look of the card.
*CLING*
The manager’s eyes widened with shock. The moment Max tapped the terminal with his card, the payment went through instantly. Her face jerked back slightly, but she quickly maintained her professional expression and looked at the salesman.
“Go, take Lita with you. Bring new pieces from the warehouse, then take a cab and deliver them to sir’s apartment. He came here on a bike, so help him out.”
“Well, if you can spare a few people, I don’t mind.”
Max had wanted to say he could take them himself. As long as the bike ran, he could carry almost any weight. His skill gave him that confidence. But after a second, he realized he didn’t really want those laptops tied to his back after all.
“Sir, here is your receipt of purchase. If you face any trouble with the new pieces in a week or two, just bring them here. I’ll replace them with new ones. That is my personal verbal guarantee to you.”
When Max stood up, the manager, who had been looking down all this while, had to arch her back slightly. He was very tall. She spoke with a straight, professional face.
Max nodded once, then extended his hand for a handshake with the manager. After that, he took his helmet and left the store. Outside, a cab was waiting, and the salesman, along with another female staff member, was loading the new laptops into it.
“Sir, if you don’t mind, my name is Sunny. On this MSI, first play GTA San Andreas, then GTA IV. If you like games, you’ll know by then. Don’t play GTA Five on this though.”
Sunny, the salesman who had been helping him with the high-end tech, suddenly stopped Max and said something unexpected.
“GTA? Yeah, I’ve seen their videos. I’ll play them now that you mention it. But why not GTA Five? It can’t run it?”
Max wore his helmet and tightened the straps under his chin as he asked. Sunny stood there with an excited face.
“It can definitely run it, but I’d love to see you play on a huge screen, maybe a dual 5090 gaming setup. If you stream it online, people will flock to it.”
Max simply smiled, then gave a small nod, the expression on his face calm and unreadable. With one smooth motion, he leaned and seated himself on the bike. His sports shoes settled firmly on both sides, steady and grounded. The kickstand snapped up cleanly with just his shift of weight. The engine hummed low beneath him, stable and obedient, as if waiting only for his command, like a warhorse ready to charge with its most trusted general.
“Follow me.”
Max’s deep voice came out calm and steady as he spoke to the cab driver, who had been watching him the whole time. Not just him—the female staff and Sunny were staring as well. Even the way he had seated himself on the bike looked smooth and precise, almost like a small piece of art.
