Chapter 100: You Broke Them
The battle had subtly shifted to a new phase when Elias was injured briefly. In a short period of time, Elias had slaughtered nearly a third of the cannibals here, and they were not foolish; they could see that anyone who came close to him would die.
They began to move back, leaving Elias standing alone at the center, surrounded by dead and dying cannibals. He was covered with blood from head to toe, and with his red hair, he did not appear like a man, but a Fiend of blood.
Elias was moving too fast, and his moves, although simplistic, were extremely direct and ruthless. What was especially disconcerting was that apart from a few growls, he had mostly fought in silence.
Even experienced warriors held a bit of hesitation when they fought; their blows were calculated, or the innate desire in the heart of everyone not to cause harm to a fellow living being may make their hands shake and their moves a bit unsteady, but Elias did not have any of those limitations.
He fought like a demon who had lived on the battlefield for a thousand years. There was no panic in his eyes or excitement, only a calm gaze that saw his opponents like puzzles that he needed to disassemble.
Elias may not know what he had done here, but his action as a single person at a lower level, challenging the entirety of this horde, was not unprecedented, but it was the first time in a long time that the horde had stepped back before a challenge like this.
The Flesh Eaters were a clan of cannibals that split off from society thousands of years ago, and their society had only grown in power over the years. They had a rigid structure, and despite their brutality and ruthless society, they still had rules that they followed.
Their challenger was only one man, and although he was impossibly strong, the smell of his stage could not be hidden. He was just a peak-level Wisp, and he was fighting all of them at the same time without playing any tricks.
They hated Elias, but they also respected him, and that respect meant they had to fight him as if he were stronger than them.
From behind, they began to pass weapons to those in front, crude tools of bones, wood, and stone, but Elias knew that among these crude weapons could be rough semi-rune weapons that may be only one-time use, but could be dangerous if he was struck by too many of them at once.
He knew that he should rush towards them and attack them before they were prepared, but Elias held back. The combat up to this point had been refreshing, but he wanted, needed… more!
Perhaps it was the awakening of his talent and his impressive rate of improvement, but he wanted the fight to grow more dangerous because he was already used to this level of combat. The thought of stagnating in a single level, when he was already holding back much of his improvements, was getting to his nerves, and he could not wait for the battle to evolve.
His wish was soon granted when the cannibals began throwing stones, bones, and other unknown objects at him.
A small smile touched his bloody lips as Elias dodged, blades spinning as they transformed into slimmer and smaller darts. In a moment, the two blades transformed into four darts.
More missiles came from all around him, and Elias danced around them and returned fire with his darts. One punched through a forehead and another through a throat, before bursting out of the back and taking a third cannibal in the throat.
In a moment, the battle had shifted to a missile war, and Elias had reaped more than seven lives, and he was yet untouched. The darts he threw only travelled for several dozen feet before they collapsed into purple motes of dust that flew back to Elias.
Elias’s smile was slowly widening, as he had never killed in this manner, and it was exhilarating to see what he could do when a new scenario presented itself to him.
Eleven cannibals had already fallen when they seemed to have had enough, and they began charging at Elias once more. However, this time, their cries were not harsh and mocking; now there was a note of fear and resignation in them… it was as if they knew they were charging to their death, but they could not flee, because their leader was behind them.
Elias could feel his blood begin to boil as the swarm inside him seemed to be transforming. There was something in him that wanted to leap out and scream to the heavens, but he kept his mind in check, and his thoughts focused, and he was surprised that his Title of Good Hunter suddenly activated for all the cannibals here.
It seemed as if their act of charging at him, despite the fact that they knew they were doomed, was enough for him to unconsciously see them as worthy prey, hence his Title was activated.
The first cannibal that reached him leaped at him like a frog, and Elias could smell the desperation in that move, reducing your mobility against an enemy who was faster than you was pure stupidity, but something about this foolish leap made him smile, and Elias also leaped towards the cannibal.
At this point, all of his darts had returned, and Elias had already reforged his blades, and he met the cannibal in mid-air, crossing his blades in front of him before he viciously brought them apart the moment they touched the body of the cannibal.
The body parted in four quarters, limbs and torso tumbling separately to the ground below him.
Elias’s leap took him to about fifteen feet into the air, and as he was falling, it was into a crowd of enemy, blades would not work here as effectively, and he allowed them to dissipate into his skin and summoned the spear, twelve feet, violet and gold-flecked, and he waded in into battle as his feet touched the mounds of bodies.
He spun the spear in blurring arcs that bisected three cannibals in the first sweep alone, and Elias shifted his position, his body always turning left to right, then right to left, as the spear followed him like a reaper’s scythe.
Guts and blood sprayed out in ridiculous volumes as heads were flung into the air, and the cannibals’ cries erupted into the air.
Elias took several steps to the side as the ground had become severely uneven with the number of bodies that had fallen, and a screaming cannibal thought he was about to lose his footing or he was getting tired, but Elias rapidly disabused him of that notion as he thrust the spear through his chest and out his back, impaling the second behind.
He twisted the spear, and then he yanked it backwards, causing the bodies to split in two.
The clearing was a charnel house now, bodies in various states of ruin, limbs scattered, blood soaking the earth into black mud. The few remaining cannibals, three, maybe four, backed away, their pitiful cries turning to whimpers.
Elias had broken them.
