Chapter 85: You Sit On A Throne of Stone
Acting more on instincts than thought, Veyris began to fire off rapid instructions,
“Tell your fellow Scribes to use the Dreadmind so your investigations will not be delayed. I want you to find me the chief archivist of the Fallen Citadel records and get every surviving blueprint, every restriction diagram, every report on the Stoneward Asylum’s original construction. Cross-reference with any known God-Death War artifacts or residual divinity signatures.”
The scribe shook, but he still bowed deeply.
“And the boy?”
Veyris walked past him, his eyes were already focused on other things, as he replied almost dismissively,
“Keep watching. Discreetly. If he leaves the Asylum walls, I want to know where he goes, who he speaks to, and what he looks at when he thinks no one is watching. Oh, I want eyes and ears inside that damned Asylum, whether by bribery or coercion, make it happen.”
He paused at the threshold as if he was just remembering something, “And tell my brother I will wait no longer than the eleventh hour. After that, I will come for him myself.”
The scribe bowed again and hurried away. The last commander from Lord Captain Veyris would most likely mean he would lose his head, but that was if he was not smart enough to pass the message across to the Lord Protector of the city more tactfully.
It was easy for those sitting in high places to make their commands, but most often, they did not consider what those commands would cause to their subordinates.
The young scribe had jumped on this opportunity to follow the Lord Captain when he observed that the man had been in a haste, and was not too concerned with gathering all the Elder Scribes that should usually follow a person of his station.
Opportunities like this did not come often, if ever, and the young scribe knew that he would want to take greater risks in order to gain more attention. A plan was forming in his head, related to Elias, while he hurried to pass across the Lord Captain’s instructions.
Veyris stepped out into the corridor, unaware of the thoughts in the Scribe’s head. Normally, he would not have missed such a thing, but certain speculations were running through his head that he hoped to lay to rest.
For a moment, he almost wanted to contact the Queen Regent, but his speculations were too wild that if he was wrong, he would quickly cut off his head and have it presented as an apology, rather than wait for the fury of the Central Palace to fall upon him.
He smiled, but that smile did not reach his eyes, as his mind whirled around in a frenzy.
A boy with no past, no family, with talent that needed a strong bloodline, alongside a Commander who hid on the edge of nowhere and emerged with a monster wearing a child’s face.
This city was built on the bones of a dead citadel, humming with excessive Heavenly restrictions that he hoped to understand, and somehow, he had an intuition that Elias was at the center of everything.
Veyris’s golden-key eyes glowed just a little brighter. “Interesting,” he whispered.
Stormfall – The Stoneward Asylum – High Spire [Eight Hours Ago]
Commander Yseult watched Elias sleep, and he looked so peaceful. For a moment, she nearly cancelled all of her plans. She could take this boy and bring him to the frozen north or the Rift-torn wastelands, far away from the Ascendant’s eyes, and even though his daily life would be filled with danger, he would be able to grow outside the machinations of this corrupted land.
The allure for this was so extreme when she looked at the nine glowing marks on his chest. She knew that this child had a strong character, and he was talented to such an extent that it defied comprehension. Knowing this child, he had hidden some of his growth and should have shown her only part of what he had acquired.
Yseult smiled as she saw the rose that was held tight to his hips by his Talent, and she knew that it was a Divine Vestige, but she could not tell its grade or potential, but if he could gain a Divine Vestige the first time he entered the Fragment, it meant that Elias had been able to kill a being who was at least at the Void Sentinel level.
With the power she had given him, and the Heavenly Restrictions on all Fragement of Divinity that prevented those within to be stronger than the Ascendant Candidate by two stages only, this was still a ridiculous feat, and Yseult knew he had not even used her power for this but for something else, because she would have felt the strands of Fate around the Divine Vestige… no, whatever he gained, he did it with his own two hands.
A Wisp killing a Mist Phantom was not unprecedented, but placing Elias’s situation into the context, it became nearly impossible. He had no knowledge of the higher stages or given weapons to deal with these challenges. Everything he had to face was new and dangerous, and still, he had found a way to win.
A talent like this, was it a wise thing to drag him into the machinations of the Ascendants? If she took him away and kept him safe until he grew strong enough, would this be enough to bring about any lasting changes?
Yseult sighed; this was just a dream for those without the chains of responsibility; perhaps she could shed them, but after thousands of years, Yseult did not think she knew herself without them.
The brief flash of madness that came over her passed, and she turned around and walked towards the top of the High Spire, her body moving so rapidly that it almost seemed as if she was teleporting. If Elias had seen this, he would have been shocked out of his mind, as it spoke of Agility in the thousands.
Sitting on the Throne of Stone that had been here for more than two hundred thousand years, in fact, the entire Stoneward Asylum was formed around this stone. Yseult pushed her divinity into the throne, and glowing lines of white began to flow through hidden runes on the throne.
This Throne of Stone could only be activated by an Angel, but even Yseult could not access all the functions of this throne, not with the Heavenly Restrictions in place that caused most of her powers to be sealed off, and forcefully reduced her Stage to that of Void Sentinel.
Still, for what she was going to be doing, Yseult did not need much power. The throne hummed, and a pulse of white fog exploded from it, and her surroundings shifted as she was transferred to a beautiful palace hall.
In this hall, there were thirteen similar stone thrones, but seven of them were broken, with only six remaining, and when Yseult appeared, her body was covered in white fog, hiding her appearance.
Her presence seemed to be a trigger as before long, the six remaining thrones were filled up, and their occupants were as well covered in fog, but the colors were different; they were gold, yellow, red, blue, pink, black, and finally white.
An excited voice that was clearly female, but so high-pitched it sounded like a voice exclaimed, “White Queen, you are finally here! Oh, you came alone? I thought you would bring the kid. After so long hearing about him, I cannot wait to see him! Hmm… just realizing that he would not be able to make it into this place until he reaches the Void Sentinel Stage, but even with Prime Lumina, he would still need at least ten years… I guess if I brought him into my domain, it could shorten that time by three days. Oh well, that wouldn’t make much difference, or would it? I have been thinking about…”
“Cherry Blossom,” Yseult coughed to interrupt the excited voice as she nodded to the pink figure, but she said nothing else. Engaging with her would be a mistake, as this Angel would gladly speak on random facts and events for centuries without getting tired or missing a beat, and the last thing anyone wanted to do was to give her more ammunition.
There was a time when Yseult would have gladly let her speak for as long as possible, but there was a time and a season for everything.
