Chapter 83: You Have A Short Story
Unlike his brother, Veyris did not have a combat talent, and even the Lumina Vein Scripture that he practiced was primarily focused on enhancing his perception.
Enhancing your advantages while shoring up your weaknesses with tools and people was a lesson that Veyris kept close to his heart, and so far it had helped him outlive several Lord Captains, and with a few more centuries of experience under his belt, who knows the height that he might reach?
With his perception enhanced, he was not able to see much, and he was not too surprised. Commander Yseult was weakened in Stormfall, but it did not make her entirely useless, and so this begged the question, why would a monster like that come to this ass end of nowhere, and what sort of monster did she create far from the eyes of the throne?
There were rumors that Commander Yseult had an unknown relationship with Kenshin and that he even crafted a blade for her, but these were ultimately rumors and not tangible proof, as he had just discovered.
He could not tell much about this Ascendant Candidate, but he knew that this child was too calm and was much too collected after he left a Fragment. He had checked with his Royal Mark, and he saw that the Commander had not broken any of the Laws of Ascendancy inside the domain of the Storm Ascendant, meaning she had not prepared this child with any information that was beyond his station as a mortal.
Usually, the end point of this meant that if the mortal survived and became an Ascendant, their experience would either cripple them or change them, and the Storm Ascendant was only looking for candidates with these changes. Why then did it seem as if what emerged from that Fragment was not a newborn Angel but an ancient monster?
“What the fuck have you done in this place, you old monster?” Veyris muttered, a bit annoyed that of all the Lord Protectors that could have been here in this town, it had to be his blood brother; this automatically crushed any means Veyris had to compel the leadership of this city.
If it were any other Lord Protector, they would be here practically licking his boots and providing for any of his needs, but he knew that Calyx would spite him just to make a point.
Well, it was a good thing that he was connected, and even in this desolate region, he still had resources that he could call up on.
With his men sending out his orders and reconnecting with his vast resources, Veyris did not mind the hour passing by; he could even spend weeks in a single spot if the situation called for it, but there was something about this city that placed his teeth on edge.
Maybe it was the fact that, for a small city, it was built on the remnants of a Fallen Citadel, and so the amount of varied Heavenly Restrictions he could feel around this place was ridiculous, and he wondered if it was true that so much Heavenly Restriction could fry the brain of mortals, because there was something about the people here that just felt… wrong.
Veyris had detected the opening of a bridge to a Fragment so he had teleported himself with a small retinue over, but perhaps he had been too quick with his actions, he should have properly researched this place, and to add salt to injury, his damned brother that he had cast out of his mind was here in this wretched city… could there be such a coincidence in this world?
His eyes squinted in suspicion as he began to think about the events that had transpired, especially inside the halls of the Stoneward Asylum, and he thought there was something that was not clicking right with him. He had seen the runes surrounding that Awakening Chamber, and he wondered if such runes were not able to entirely shield the emanations of power from a Fragment opening.
The Stoneward Asylum was an old Watchtower from the Cleansing War, and so it was hard to know all the capabilities of this military fort, but Veyris could look through the Archives and see if he could find the Building Specs for this old fort, and know what sort of shielding capabilities it had, this might turn out to be important, and so he made a small notation in his Mind Palace, and he moved on.
Thinking about how he was going to be framing his report to the Queen Regent, Veyri’s eyes glowed with a hidden light resembling a golden key as he worked inside his head and waited for the report he had ordered to arrive, then he felt the ring on his left thumb vibrate, and he smiled… It was time to know everything about this Elias.
He flicked his fingers, and a single page fell onto his palm. Veyris frowned. A single page? Even a baby had at least two pages of information, which covered their ancestry, biological data, and many other relevant information, before the data about the baby itself would be written.
An Ascendant Candidate cannot be an unknown individual, even when they were mortals, because they always had a certain quirk about them that differentiates them from others around, and their history was deep. How is it possible that he had only one page of information?!
He was about to make a harsh query to his people when Veyris closed his eyes and suppressed his anger. There must be a reason why this Ascendant Candidate was relatively unknown, and he should look at what had been given to him first before he blew his hat away from his head.
Taking several moments to calm himself down, Veyris knew that everything that had happened to him in the last few hours was making him upset, from the disgraceful dismissal by the Commander of the Stoneward Asylum to having to wait for hours for the damned Lord Protector and the weird itch he had in the back of his skull from the moment he entered this city.
He was already on a short fuse, and any careless action on his part would only make his anger worse. After a few seconds, Veyris had resumed his calm disposition, and he began to read slowly, and the more he read, the more puzzled he became.
Elias had no known family in Stormfall or any surrounding city, and so his family name was unknown. There had been varied reports surrounding him, but none had been verified. Some of the reports were so outlandish that Veyris knew they were most likely a sign that he was a prospective Ascendant Candidate; others were extremely ridiculous.
A report says the boy had been thrown out of the Asylum when he was six or seven, as he ate rats and was beginning to decay even while he was still moving around, and he was thrown outside the city when the smell from his decaying body became too much to endure.
Then, a few days later, he was seen walking about with no injuries, and that was the most anyone had seen of him. He was reported to work for the Palace, but Veyris knew that this was ridiculous because of the Heavenly Restrictions around the Palace, and the reason the report was so light was that Elias hardly did anything outside the Stoneward Asylum.
