Chapter 45: Observation

One thing Ye Jun realised after a month of practice with his system was that the Dao Affinities were quite special. Even while being so low, they gave him some passive effects, which he had to discover himself.

The Slaughter Dao Affinity made his attacks sharper and deadlier when he went for the kill. Just like that, the Hunt Dao made his senses sharper and allowed him to sense killing intent aimed at him, or even something as simple as others looking at him.

It was subtle, but as an assassin, Ye Jun paid close attention to these minor details, so he quickly managed to get a hang of it.

And now his senses were telling him that a small group of people were watching him from a distance. Fortunately, he didn’t sense any killing intent, so there was a chance the other party wasn’t hostile.

’But the chances of them remaining non-hostile are pretty low,’ Ye Jun thought and then shouted to his left, “Aren’t you going to meet us, or do you hate the sun?”

He waited for a few moments before he saw a total of three people walking out of the bushes. All of them were young ladies, though what surprised him was the fact that he knew one of them.

“Xia Yan?” He raised an eyebrow. “What’s she doing here?”

Meihui covered her face with the fan and stepped backward. “I’ll let you do the talking. This Young Master hates talking to others.”

’As if young masters are introverts,’ Ye Jun rolled his eyes at her.

Soon, Xia Yan reached him as she smiled. “Greetings, Young Master Jun. A pleasure to meet you under such special… circumstances.”

Both of their eyes went to the boar’s mouth, where they could still see human flesh clinging to its teeth.

“You’re in luck then, Miss Yan,” Ye Jun smiled as well. “I wonder though, why are you not chasing after the treasure?”

“Because of this exactly,” Xia Yan replied calmly. “Since it seems like we both want to exchange information, why don’t we sit down and have a proper chat over lunch?”

She gestured to her group and said, “My sisters are hungry too, so perhaps Brother Jun can share his meat.”

’My meat is pretty expensive and unique,’ he wanted to joke but decided otherwise. “I worked hard to get this meat, so it won’t be free.”

Xia Yan made a face at him, wondering just what kind of person he was. She remained calm and said, “I’ll pay with a High-Grade Tier 1 Beast Core.”

After thinking for a bit, Ye Jun shrugged. “Sure then. But you have to help with the cleaning.”

The five of them got to work and soon had roasted meat in their hands. The stream nearby helped with cleaning, as they also displaced the boar’s head there.

They were fine with killing but certainly felt disgusted at the thought of eating meat with human flesh still stuck in its teeth and mouth. They also had to clean its insides for the same reason.

Then, Ye Jun cooked the meat for everyone and used a nearby tree’s leaves for seasoning. Apparently, it was good for that.

All this while, neither side brought up the topic of Ye Jun killing someone from his own clan. Xia Yan didn’t seem to care about it much, especially since the Ye Clan was their enemy, so them losing their younger generation was good for her.

So it was silently decided that Xia Yan didn’t witness it.

“I’m still curious, what are you doing here?” Ye Jun asked.

“Because I suspected the rumors of treasure to be fake,” Xia Yan answered, eyeing him. “Especially since it originated from you.”

“You didn’t believe them?” Ye Jun was now interested. “Why is that? Everyone else did.”

“Because I observe the people around me, unlike others,” Xia Yan said, taking a bite of the meat. “The rumors included that Song Liangxue is using you, which I don’t believe at all.”

Ye Jun raised an eyebrow in surprise. He certainly didn’t see this coming, as she was the first to say this.

“Why is that?”

“I’m a woman, Young Master Jun,” Xia Yan smiled. “I can recognize the look she gives you. That isn’t something you give to someone you’re using for schemes.”

“What look?”

“You wouldn’t understand,” Xia Yan said, a mysterious glint in her eyes. “It’s something only a woman can understand.”

Ye Jun was speechless as he gave a side glance to Meihui, wondering if she noticed something he didn’t. Song Liangxue was interested in him, but was there more to it?

Shaking his head, he said, “But those rumors are made up since we never talked about her using me. It was something others fabricated.”

“True, but I still don’t take you as someone so foolish,” Xia Yan chuckled. “You don’t even pretend well. It’s the others who are foolish enough to believe your act.”

She turned to look at Meihui over Ye Jun’s shoulder and said, “No offense, but you’re not a good actor, Young Master Rong.”

Meihui almost spat out the meat hearing that and glared at her, but the young woman just smiled at her and said, “And you’re very handsome and seem virtuous, so I don’t believe you would be so wicked.”

’Hold up!’ Ye Jun’s eyes lit up as he turned to look into Xia Yan’s eyes and almost facepalmed. ’This girl actually likes Meihui. What is this world? Why are women falling for looks only?’

Meihui didn’t even retort, feeling uncomfortable under Xia Yan’s gaze, and simply withdrew. “Call me if you need anything.”

“Hmm,” Ye Jun nodded and focused back on Xia Yan. “You’re quite good at deduction, or maybe foolish to believe I’m competent.”

“Aren’t you? You’ve already advanced to the Qi Condensation Realm, haven’t you? All without letting the clan find out about it,” Xia Yan smiled. “I’m impressed. So, did you really spread the rumors so others would waste their time?”

“Who knows?” Ye Jun smiled mysteriously. “Maybe the treasure is hidden somewhere else.”

Just then, he noticed something and glanced to his right, where a young woman came running toward their group. She ignored Ye Jun completely and greeted Xia Yan before whispering something in her ear.

Xia Yan’s smile widened. “What do we have here? You were actually right, Young Master Jun. There’s a treasure in the Whispering Valley.”
