Chapter 57: Only Two Remained
Only the best of the younger generation remained in the Burial Chamber. Every single one already qualified to enter one of the three Vassal Sects.
This achievement alone was enough for that.
But they still continued on, with determination and resolve shining in their eyes, along with an intense flame of rivalry. They didn’t want others to outdo them.
Dao Heart was very important for breakthroughs, and losses affected it greatly. Especially for those who were competitive in nature. So it was no surprise that no one in the chamber wanted to turn back.
Even as they stepped onto the Fourth Step, which had enough pressure to bring all of them to their knees, they had to circulate their Qi to neutralize the pressure.
’The reward better be worth it,’ Ye Jun thought as he turned toward his right where Ye Chen alone stood on the fourth step.
His eyes had turned light red, and his muscles showed beneath the dim light. Clearly, he was also barely keeping up with the pressure.
Their eyes met, filled with hatred as they grinned at each other. A silent pact formed between them.
’Whoever backs out first is the loser. A pathetic bastard.’
Then, Ye Jun looked away and went to see his reward. It was a Talisman this time, though he couldn’t figure out its usage, so he did the same thing he did with the other rewards, throwing it into his space bag.
’I will have to ask Meihui about these things.’
Nobody spoke of their rewards to each other. Even Xie Yan turned silent, her face losing all composure as she began taking this much more seriously now.
For now, she was looking at her cousins who were coughing up blood. Their faces were pale as if they hadn’t seen the sun in years. Even their bodies were shaking uncontrollably.
Xie Yan seemed reluctant, but she still told them to retreat. They couldn’t continue any longer unless they wanted to crush their bodies completely.
Each step increased the gravity by a huge margin, so the fifth step was bound to put enough pressure to crush even Qi Condensation Realm Cultivators.
Tang Haoren and Ye Chen were also forced to take such decisions. They could have stayed in the Burial Chamber, but they needed immediate medical attention, so they had to leave the Tomb itself.
In the end, only four people remained in the Burial Chamber.
None stepped forward, only looking at the fifth step, which was smaller than the previous ones. They grimaced, thinking about the pressure they would have to handle there.
“I’m surprised you made it this far,” Ye Chen said, glancing at Ye Jun. “What did that man from the Central Lands feed you?”
“Jealous of my growth?” Ye Jun chuckled. “Want to snatch that man from me? You desire him?”
Ye Chen frowned a bit, wondering why his wording sounded so off. Then he scoffed. “You deserve none of it.”
“I’ve already heard that a thousand times. Come up with a better insult,” Ye Jun sighed. “You’re struggling hard, so why don’t you give up?”
Ye Chen snorted and climbed down to the fifth step. He didn’t jump, knowing the gravity would just pull him downward with ridiculous force.
“You two run your mouths a lot,” Tang Haoren scoffed in disdain. “Compensating for lack of ability?”
“Woah! Did you hear that, little brother?” Ye Jun exclaimed. “He has better comebacks than you. You even failed at this.”
Sadly, Ye Chen couldn’t hear him properly as he went down on all fours, veins popping from his arms as he punched the stone and struggled to sit upright.
“I wonder if even one of us can reach the coffin,” Xie Yan muttered. “The Seventh Step would be impossible to cover.”
After thinking for a second and looking at Ye Chen’s condition, she smiled lightly and turned toward Ye Jun, who was preparing to go down. “I’ll give up here, Young Master Jun. I hope you achieve your goal.”
“Much appreciated,” Ye Jun smiled back, then turned toward Tang Haoren. “What about you?”
Tang Haoren didn’t reply. Instead, he climbed down, and one of his forearm bones snapped under the pressure. Blood oozed out as he tried to contain himself.
As Xie Yan retreated, Ye Jun shook his head and also climbed down. The moment his feet touched the ground, he experienced a crushing force like never before.
Blood ran down, ignoring his body’s command. His brain felt fuzzy from the lack of blood supply, his vision shimmering into darkness.
’Not yet!’
He clenched his fists and circulated his Qi, forcing his body to function normally again. It negated a large portion of the pressure, allowing blood to reach his brain again.
Slowly, he pushed himself up, his bones grinding against each other. It truly was a miracle that his bones hadn’t turned into dust yet.
Even a Body Strengthening Realm Martial Artist would turn into meat paste under such pressure.
From the corner of his eyes, he witnessed Tang Haoren taking some pills. His eyes flashed with conflicting emotions. He was reluctant, but he didn’t force himself further.
Silently, he withdrew and climbed back up. Surprisingly, the gravity didn’t punish those who wanted to withdraw. They didn’t feel the crushing pressure while climbing back, which Ye Jun found strange considering how gravity worked.
’Fuck this shit! Who even made this?’
Ye Jun panted and turned to his side. A glint passed through his eyes as his lips curled into a cruel smile.
Only two people remained in the burial chamber, both looking at each other. They knew what they wanted. Neither cared about the treasures at the moment.
All they could see was an opportunity they had longed for their entire lives. An opportunity to crush the person they hated the most.
“Want to climb back?” Ye Jun grinned. “I want to break your bones myself, not through this pressure.”
“And you say I steal your lines,” Ye Chen’s eyes turned bloodshot.
With that, both climbed back up toward the First Step where the gravity affected them the least. They knew they couldn’t fight in the environment the fifth step provided.
They wanted to fight freely and kill each other.
They longed for it.
Finally, they could accomplish it today.
