Chapter 55: The Burial Chamber
A deathly silence reigned in the hall as they all jumped away from the eyeballs. It was clear the statues were targeting people because of them.
Fortunately, the stone statues didn’t harm anyone else. They simply bent down, which Ye Jun found pretty bizarre to look at, and picked up their eyeballs. After setting them in place, they went back to their positions to become what they were… statues.
Everyone looked at each other, wondering what to do. They knew the answer lay in the eyeballs, but they couldn’t just risk more deaths while trying.
“Any suggestions, Young Master Jun?” Xie Yan asked, turning toward him. “I only brought three people, and I’m not sacrificing them.”
“Does that mean you’re turning back?” Ye Jun asked in return.
“I believe we have some goodwill between us,” Xie Yan smiled. “So please don’t scheme against me.”
Tang Haoren crossed his arms and said, “We can send the rogue participants to check. If something happens, our clans can compensate them by paying their families.”
Only around seven rogue Cultivators had managed to enter the tomb. Hearing his words, their expressions worsened, but his words did ignite hope in their eyes.
“Scared to lose your men, huh?” Ye Jun scoffed and turned to study the statues. “There’s no need for that. If my guess is correct, then we need to take out that statue’s eyes.”
He pointed toward a certain statue. It wore armor glistening like soft gold, and even its eyes held that slight shimmer. Seeing that, Ye Jun quickly remembered the mural he had read.
’The man dug out the golden figure’s eyes,’ Ye Jun thought. ’What a man. Even the key to the gates is his eyes. Just how much did you hate him?’
“And what if you’re just conspiring against us?” Ye Chen said. “You’re a murderer. So you must be planning to get rid of all of us to get the treasure for yourself.”
“Try eating Black Clover leaves every day, little brother,” Ye Jun replied, still using that term, knowing it made Ye Chen angry.
“Is there anything special about them?” Xie Yan asked, curious.
“Folks say if one eats black clover leaves every day for a year, they get a brain,” Ye Jun shrugged. “He needs it greatly.”
“Pfftt!” Xie Yan couldn’t hold back and laughed. “Good one.”
Ignoring Ye Chen, Ye Jun dashed forward and climbed the statue in quick strides. Everyone already knew about his abilities, so there was no point in hiding any longer.
He reached the shoulders and from there jumped up to the ears. Then, he carefully plucked out the eyeballs of the statue and jumped down.
Everyone tensed up as they awaited the scorching fate of Ye Jun. But nothing happened. The statue remained standing in its place, as if losing the eyes was a simple matter.
“You could have told us sooner,” Tang Haoren narrowed his eyes at him. “My cousin died because of you.”
“I have no obligation to save your clan. And it was you who killed him, not me,” Ye Jun shrugged, carrying the eyeballs in each hand. “And I only just remembered reading the murals.”
Tang Haoren clicked his tongue but didn’t argue any further.
Nodding to him, Ye Jun showed the eyeballs to them. “Anyone wants to try opening the gate?”
No one came forward. They didn’t want to take more risks unless necessary.
“Have some balls, man. Oh, nice pun,” Ye Jun grinned and went toward the gate.
He knew this could be a trap, but he had a feeling something important lay on the other side of this gate, so he wanted to be the first to enter.
He inserted one eyeball on the left side, then went to do the same on the right side. The moment the eyeballs clicked into those hollow spaces, a tremor ran through the tomb as the metal gate shuddered and began opening with a scraping noise.
Ye Jun stepped back, keeping an eye on others while also looking at the gate. As the gate finally opened entirely, he witnessed darkness beyond it.
’Wait! Those are lights.’
Blue-flamed torches illuminated the other side, but their light was very dim, or at least it seemed so from his point of view.
Nobody rushed in as they knew it could be a trap. They slowly moved forward and reached the edge, finally seeing the main part of the tomb.
The burial chamber.
’This is a fucking pyramid!’ Ye Jun was speechless.
Indeed, the structure before him seemed like an inverse pyramid. His position was one of the four entrances to the chamber. The coffin lay at the bottom of the chamber, and to reach it, one had to climb down seven stepped stairs formed by massive stone slabs.
Every slab could easily house a small manor.
’These steps aren’t normal,’ Ye Jun guessed, as he didn’t get a good feeling about this.
“Ahh! Screw it!” A woman from the rogue participants’ group threw up her hands and jumped onto the first step. “I’ll take the treasure.”
Nobody stopped her.
However, something astonishing happened. Instead of landing on the first step before them, the woman landed on the first step leading from the left entrance.
What was even more incredible was that the woman knelt down and had to struggle to stand up. She cursed and finally managed to stand upright.
’Ah! I should have expected this considering the corridor,’ Ye Jun quickly understood the function and jumped forward. Others followed him soon after.
His vision disoriented for a moment before he fell down at an incredible speed, as if a massive force was pulling him downward. As he was prepared for it, he managed to steady himself.
He blinked and took a second to get used to this new gravity. Then he looked around and found that all of them had been separated and thrown onto the four sides randomly.
Ye Jun turned to look at his side and found Xie Yan trying to calm herself. Living up to her reputation, she was quick to get used to this.
She also assessed the situation and smiled at Ye Jun. “Seems like we’re in this together.”
“Or we could be in competition,” Ye Jun said. “We don’t know why we’re separated, but I know for sure the treasure is there.”
At the base of the stairs was a wooden coffin.
Ye Jun smiled.
