Chapter 79: Possible Future
All of them turned silent as they thought about the dream and the words left behind by its owner. Because of Meihui, they believed it to be true to some extent, but that also meant accepting the dreadful reality.
“You said the world was destroyed in that dream?” Song Liangxue asked. “So it was a possible future. A highly likely one perhaps. All because of this event called Convergence.”
Meihui prepared the tea while deep in thought. The information hit her the hardest, perhaps because of whatever she knew about the Monarchs.
“Yes. And it happened nine times already,” Ye Jun said, taking his cup of tea. “They were stopped by these seven people called the Seven Monarchs.”
“We’re not sure they’re the same people though,” Song Liangxue pointed it out. “It might as well be just a title given to those defending against the Convergence.”
“No. They’re all the same people,” Meihui said firmly. “All nine times they were the same persons. But it is also a title, based on something very important.”
Song Liangxue and Ye Jun looked at each other but didn’t question Meihui. Oaths were very important and could be deadly if broken, so they didn’t pressure her for more information.
“Then it matches the words,” Ye Jun said. “We don’t know any Monarchs, do we? Is it possible they changed their titles or something?”
“I doubt it. They kept it nine times,” Song Liangxue countered. “Considering how we don’t have any knowledge about the Convergence, I’m guessing it’s an event that only happens once in tens of thousands of years. Now consider someone who lived through nine of them.”
Ye Jun glanced at Meihui but she didn’t have anything to add on the subject. She just sat there, contemplating something deeply.
“Then it means they abandoned the world. They don’t want to face the Convergence again,” Ye Jun said.
“Or they are dead,” Song Liangxue pointed out. “It could be that the last Convergence was dreadful enough to wipe out the world as you saw, so they sacrificed themselves while repelling it.”
“Possible, but I think otherwise. The man did say the presence of Monarchs is necessary, so unless he means new Monarchs are going to rise, they’re not dead.” He paused before shrugging. “Or maybe they are.”
“We’ll have to take both into consideration,” Song Liangxue nodded. “They held back the Convergence nine times, but they’re not here this time. And since their presence is necessary, without them the world will be destroyed.”
She took a sip of her tea before adding, “Then it also means the Convergence event is horrible enough to destroy this whole world, which I find quite impossible. But the path of cultivation is longer than anyone sees, so it’s possible to gain that kind of power.”
“The seeds are ready to bloom,” Meihui muttered. “What does that mean? What seeds?”
“I can’t guess that one,” Ye Jun said, leaning back a little. “But they’re probably like signs of the arrival of the Convergence. If we find out these seeds, then perhaps we can confirm things about the Convergence.”
“I’ll ask my friend to look into the matter of the Convergence,” Meihui said. “If there’s anyone who can find out about it, it’s her. But she’ll have to be discreet. This matter cannot be leaked.”
She looked at them. “And I mean it. Please make sure you only tell this to your trusted ones. If others find out about it, even the Song Clan will struggle to face the consequences.”
“Seems like this matter is intentionally kept secret by someone,” Ye Jun said.
Meihui didn’t reply.
“Good, we’ll remember it. Just to confirm, the reason we need to be careful is because of the Convergence or the Monarchs?”
“They’re both related,” Meihui rolled her eyes. “Just as you saw. You cannot know more about one while ignoring the other.”
“Fair enough,” Ye Jun scratched his forehead. “He also said to unite them, which is pretty simple considering I already saw the union.”
“Spiritual Beasts and humans. If the world is ending, then they’ll have to work together,” Song Liangxue massaged her cheek and said. “But it’s impossible given the current standings.”
Ye Jun nodded in understanding.
Humans and Spiritual Beasts were locked in a war of extermination. Both hated each other enough to kill each other on sight. The fact that killing helped them in cultivation didn’t make the situation any better.
He saw no future where they would unite together to fight someone.
’It is possible if they see the world ending, but by then it’ll already be too late.’
“I don’t think that’s all it means,” Song Liangxue said. “Do you see humans united?”
Ye Jun raised an eyebrow.
“We fight each other so much,” Meihui nodded. “Everyone is at war with each other, even if many don’t do it directly. There is no unity in this world.”
“A scattered force that hates each other is easy to defeat,” Ye Jun sighed. “I guess I understand his words now. If those creatures really come, they will easily annihilate us.”
“Where do they even come from?” Song Liangxue asked, curious. “I’ve never heard about them.”
“It could be that the Monarchs sealed them or something,” Ye Jun said. “They were coming out of tears in space and the place beyond them… I barely survived looking at it.”
“Give us both a written, detailed version of that dream,” Meihui said. “We’ll need to research as much as possible. Because if there’s even a possibility of it being true, then we need to prepare ourselves.”
Ye Jun groaned in frustration. “Do we really have to? We’re basically insignificant in the bigger game, and the Convergence might as well be thousands of years in the future. We might not even be alive by then.”
“What happened to you?” Meihui asked.
He shrugged. “Just a month ago I was barely keeping myself alive. Struggling for it. Now that I’ve got freedom, you’re telling me I’ll have to worry about the world ending. I really don’t want to. I don’t care what happens to everyone else.”
“I can understand your situation, but it is important. If this world ends, we’re dying with it,” Song Liangxue said softly. “We need to prepare, dear. How about this? You can enjoy your life while we do the research.”
“No, I’m sorry about that,” Ye Jun rubbed his forehead and said. “I’m just annoyed, nothing else. And you’re right. Even if I don’t care about others, I’ll need to see this through for our survival.”
