Chapter 97: Ragging In Cultivation World
Rising in the Tempest Gale Rankings was pretty easy, if Ye Jun had to put it in words. All he had to do was challenge someone of a higher rank and if he defeated them, he would get that rank.
Of course, there were limits to this to make it fair for everyone, especially for those at higher ranks. Han Yuexin explained everything in detail.
One could only challenge someone ten ranks around them. For example, a disciple at 25th Rank could challenge disciples up to 15th and at the lowest 35th. This limit was set so that low-ranked disciples didn’t bother the higher-ranked ones uselessly.
If you wanted to challenge them, then prove you were deserving of that fight.
Then, there was also a limit on how many fights one had to take. Accepting challenges was necessary for every ranker, after all.
One had to accept at least two challenges every week. That was mandatory. Above it, they could reject them. They could also reject one mandatory challenge every two weeks.
All in all, one had to fight at least six challenges in a month. There was an exception here too. If nobody challenged you, then there was no need to fight.
’You can basically chill on yours. Those at higher ranks probably do this. Hmm, I’ll have to remember this.’
Fortunately, there were no limits on how many challenges you could initiate, so if someone wanted to speed-run to the top, logically they could do that too.
’Really interesting.’
There were no normal duels in this sect. Fights were forbidden and since there was good surveillance, the rule was executed properly. If one wanted to fight someone, they could always challenge them to a duel which would affect their rankings too.
If one was found fighting outside of it, there were heavy punishments. This was done so that everyone was treated fairly.
Ye Jun found the system pretty good, though there were a few flaws. But then again, this was basically a school or university if he looked from Earth’s perspective. Protection was necessary initially to train the disciples properly.
There were a few more things Han Yuexin explained before she decided to end the lecture.
Things like how every hall served a different purpose in this sect and a disciple could choose them based on the path they wished to take.
The hall masters would teach them from there, though it wasn’t guaranteed they would teach you everything. For that, you would have to impress them.
The Beast Taming Hall was also there, so if Ye Jun wanted, he could go there and learn from them. Or simply collect the attributes.
The hall masters and the elders there would hold lectures that were very useful for the disciples.
There was also the rule that one would only get a monthly allowance for five years. If one didn’t enter the Main Sect by then, they would have to work for their survival.
Till then, the sect would take care of that.
Once everything was done, Han Yuexin wished everyone good luck and her Falcon took her away, leaving the newer recruits alone with the older disciples.
They were now free to do whatever they wanted.
As Ye Jun was making some plans, he caught something in the corner of his eyes. The older disciples were surrounding the new recruits. Tension rose in the atmosphere as soon a young man clad in the sect’s uniform jumped onto the central arena.
“Looks like even sects have ragging,” Ye Jun muttered to himself. “What a drag!”
But he knew it would be allowed by the sect. They encouraged conflicts, after all. So as long as the seniors didn’t go overboard, they would turn a blind eye to their actions.
The young man smiled toward them and said, “Greetings, my fellow brothers and sisters. My name is Feng Hui, ranked 45th in the Tempest Gale Rankings. I’m your senior, so I thought of welcoming you.”
Nobody spoke.
“But I’m also here to give you a lesson. You see, everyone is a genius of their town, village, or wherever you come from. We call such people frogs in a well, so it is our duty to humble you and remind you of a fact that no matter how strong you get or how great a genius you are, there’s always someone better than you.”
Ye Jun had to say that it was true.
Feng Hui scanned the crowd before him, as many began to feel uncomfortable.
“Today is dedicated to that. You cannot reject this, as it’s a tradition. Breaking tradition means you’re going against every disciple. And I can assure you, you don’t want to break them.”
His smile turned cruel as he added,
“It works as a curse, you see. And it’s very real. You’ll get into many accidents and people will also avoid you. You might also lose your resources or get on the bad side of some senior. And believe me, you don’t want that.”
’Clear threats,’ Ye Jun thought.
The curse was nothing but an excuse to bully others. Anyone could see it. The accidents he talked about were their own doing. The other parts were just worded differently but their meaning remained the same.
He was basically saying that if someone tried to resist them, then they would be isolated by the whole sect and preyed upon. Even though this world was one of strength, connections also mattered, so being isolated wasn’t a good thing.
At least, for normal people.
If you had talent or were strong, then this meant nothing at all.
Feng Hui looked around and his eyes settled on their group. Something sparkled in his eyes as he said, “We’ll start with you, the big man.”
“Me?” Mountain asked. “Whatcha want?”
Ye Jun almost thought that Mountain also came from Earth, maybe reincarnated too, but then he realized it was just his accent doing wonders.
Feng Hui laughed and said, “You’re too tall so everyone needs to look up at you. So we need to humble your superiority over your height. Get on your knees and kowtow to the highest peak of our sect.”
Ye Jun followed the direction and snickered in disdain.
The main peak was right behind the central arena, so if Mountain really kowtowed, he would be indirectly doing it toward him. This made Ye Jun curious as to what he would choose.
Mountain gave a glance to the main peak and said, “I do not mind worshiping the peaks. Ulankars respect mountains the most. But this not it. No bending my knees.”
“Oh my! Are you planning to be cursed?” Feng Hui was obviously very happy.
Every year, there would be some rebellious ones and he liked to put them in their place. There was no fun if everyone obeyed him, after all.
The so-called tradition was just kept to stroke the older disciples’ egos and also because they were subjected to it once, so now they wanted to inflict others with it.
“Peaks bless me, so I do not fear any curse,” Mountain shrugged nonchalantly. “As for isolation, I do not want to mingle with you lowlanders. Pathetic creatures.”
“Really, brother?” Ye Jun asked.
“Ayi! You different.” Mountain waved his hand, making Ye Jun chuckle too.
“Is that so?” Feng Hui grinned. “Well then, is it your friend there? We will move forward to you then. Perhaps then this giant musclehead would understand what we are teaching him.”
Song Liangxue crossed her arms, sending a challenging look at him. She dared him to choose her as his target, but that only made the young man ignore her even harder. Even he wasn’t stupid enough to challenge her.
Instead, he focused on Ye Jun and said, “Your name is Ye Jun, right? The fiancé of the young miss of the Song Clan, right?”
That sent murmurs spreading among the crowd gathered there. From new recruits to senior students, all of them paid attention to him now.
Ye Jun smiled, feeling the pressure from every side. Gazes of envy and hatred quickly accumulated. He took a step forward and said, “Indeed, I am her fiancé and she came with me too. If none of you know, this is Song Liangxue, the young miss of the Song Clan and also my future wife.”
He smiled at her. “Right, honey?”
Song Liangxue was a bit confused about why he was provoking everyone, but who was she to care about others? She lightly smiled and said, “There’s no doubt about it.”
Ye Jun turned back to Feng Hui, whose expression had taken an odd shape. But he quickly recovered, which surprised Ye Jun.
Clearing his throat, he said, “Were you going to say something? I’m ready to get humbled.”
