They were surprised because the winged tiger was not made of flesh, but entirely of stone!

If it was seen by an untrained eye, one would just assume that this stone winged tiger was just a massive sculpture. But with his eyes filled with qi, Fang Lin saw miniature details that seem to indicate that this tiger was actually a living creature.
