Chapter 67: Feelings (5)
They were talking about big changes to the original agreement. It was quite an unexpected event, but Ayen understood the implications.
Technically, Devion should be part of this conversation since he was involved in it, too.
Ayen did not take his eyes off Khal’s face; he wanted to confirm it. He wanted to see his expression and not miss them.
Sure enough, the moment that Ayen mentioned Devion’s name, Khal’s expression hardened.
Ayen’s heart fluttered even more, and his doubts were confirmed.
He did not know what had gotten into him and how he suddenly wanted to provoke something out of Khal.
“He won’t like it,” Khal simply answered. He did not elaborate; his dark gaze showed Ayen that he needed to drop this conversation.
However, why would he? Ayen did not plan in advance; it only dawned on him now. Sometimes, he was impulsive. But this was beyond that.
“Do you like Devion? ” Ayen asked; his words caused a terrifying chill to permeate the air.
Ayen shivered, but he only tightened his clasped hands together. He calmly met those dangerous eyes. Was he insane? Ayen found them very attractive, as though something inside him was being satisfied.
Right, it was not the polite look Khal often gave to him; it was a gaze filled with emotions.
When Khal’s gaze made Ayen’s whole body tremble and suffocate him, Ayen never looked away. He faced him head-on.
Khal then sighed; the chill dispersed, although Ayen’s body was still trembling.
“You’re quite perceptive,” Khal grinned dangerously, his eyes softening. “You can tell when Devion still failed to notice.”
Khal’s smile then faded, and the tavern was suddenly submerged in darkness as all the windows and doors became tightly shut. Only the small ceiling light serves as illumination.
The space seemed to also tighten; Ayen found that he could not move. His body was tied to his chair. Despite that, he did not break his eyes from the eye contact.
He was scared deep inside, but he knew Khal could not kill him. As long as he was a unique and indispensable existence to them, no one could kill under their watch.
Khal suddenly laughed, his eyes coldly sharpened and narrowed. He brushed his hair to the back and motioned for Ayen to speak.
“Tell me, why are you asking this?”
Khal knew why he was confident. Of course, he could not kill Ayen. Even if Ayen wanted to die, he could never do so. However, if those lips uttered any single threat against Devion…
His heart chilled, and the ominous mana around him spread.
…Khal would not mind giving Ayen special treatment to the doors of his cold palace.
Ayen clenched his teeth and coughed; he suddenly felt a primal fear from the bottom of his heart. He knew that if he said something wrong here, even if he was not killed, he would live a life worse than death.
“I won’t harm Devion,” Ayen spoke amidst his cough; Khal merely stared at him. “I know you don’t trust me. I also don’t trust you.”
Khal’s brow moved.
“Do you think I will be able to do anything to him?”
“You can. Emotionally,” Khal darkly answered.
Devion’s emotional state seemed stable, but he never was. Ayen had now become a variable as well.
Ayen thought he had made a mistake. Maybe provoking Khal was not such a good decision from the start. Or, probably, mentioning Devion was the one who messed it up.
However, he had no choice. Whether satisfying his twisted curiosity or taking revenge on the people who made his life a living hell… Ayen could only do this.
He was powerless on his own. The reason he could only let them trample him and manipulate his life, even when he only tried to survive to piss them all off.
Ayen had to live to annoy them. That was all he could do. He even came into this red zone, even if he knew it was a trap.
He did not want to let them succeed. For someone as powerless as he was, this petty revenge was all he could do.
And then, he found out that the yellow zone chaos did not seem like a coincidence. Ayen was not sure if it was chosen because he was there, but all his hatred had surfaced and made the darkness inside him bloom further.
Khal and Devion appeared, and he momentarily forgot about it.
Only momentarily, as it lingered in his mind, tormenting him.
Why would they want to kill him off? Ayen was trampled a lot of times; when would they be satisfied? If he dropped dead and admitted defeat?
Ayen refused to do so. As a result, he was barely surviving, never actually living. If he were only to ask, Ayen would have wanted to die long ago.
Living was actually so hard; he was too exhausted to even move.
“I can return with you or be assigned to the zone you want me to. Whatever Devion wanted.” After all, Khal would not really hear his decision, only Devion’s.
“And, I’m sorry if I ask you about him… I’m just really curious.” It was not all, but Ayen had satisfied his demons with the answer.
It also confirmed that to deal with Khal… Devion needed to be by his side. Not that he would continue to provoke them; the perspective was only a last resort.
“You need something,” Khal bluntly spoke, not asking, but he was certain.
He still looked pissed off about Ayen’s mention of Devion and his feelings, but he looked calm somehow.
Now that Khal had confirmed Ayen was not a threat, then his guard decreased. At the end of the day, Ayen was still his guide, and Khal was unable to truly show his ruthless side against him.
Ayen nodded. There was no need to be vague about it.
“I need your help.”
“Help, huh.” Khal touched his chin, then his eyes flickered. “To kill someone?”
Ayen shook his head. The indifference in his eyes suddenly shifted, and the twisted darkness within him seemed to show and became reflected in his eyes.
Khal was taken aback; his whole attention became drawn to Ayen. Despite the dark emotions, compared to Ayen’s usual indifference, it was a great contrast.
“Kill? No, I don’t want that.” Ayen stared back at Khal, showing the most emotion he was capable of at this moment, and that was hatred. “Torment them. Let them desperately feel how dying is better than survival.”
They never let Ayen go, despite the years that passed. Why would Ayen easily kill them off? He was not that generous yet.
