Chapter 80: The Impending Chaos (2)
The Nevaris Clan was one of the top three, and they were more of a guide-dominated clan than espers. One word could describe this clan: high and mighty.
However, Khal preferred to call them pretentious bastards. He was quite surprised Ayen hailed from this clan.
If it were done by one from the Nevaris, they would surely put some symbol or at least a trace that would lead to them.
That was the Nevaris Clan’s way of doing things; they always tended to be high profile.
It could be argued they might have deliberately done so, but Khal doubted it. Ayen also agreed with him.
“Thorne and Locke Clans are both a possibility.” Khal then pointed out the two. “Or they might be working together. Or all of them.”
They weren’t really looking for answers, but more wanting to satisfy their curiosity with a guessing game. They discussed a lot of clan afterward, but still had a strong guess with them working together.
“If they want to overturn the government, the strength of one elite clan isn’t enough,” Devion chipped in, which the two agreed with.
Khal was more informed about this, so he then dropped the biggest assumption he had based on reports he received and the space fissure they discovered.
“This fissure isn’t alone; they might have created a number of them.”
What could one space fissure be useful for? It was in no way enough for their grand plan. Otherwise, Khal would find this war boring.
Ayen narrowed his eyes. “They created a lot?”
Khal nodded positively. “For sure. It’s scattered all over the world.”
Ayen could not help but frown.
“Will monsters crawl out from here?”
“Not really. Some of them might. But the real purpose of these space fissures is for their forces to easily travel everywhere.”
Space fissures weren’t enough to function as a dungeon, as a real dungeon was connected to some other world. In other words, these space fissures needed to be connected to one such dungeon first.
And so the resources needed were higher, and so Khal did not think all of these space fissures would have the same function as a real dungeon. After all, if they had done so, they were only hurting themselves in the process.
Elite Clans would not do something so unnecessary, especially in such a critical war.
Devion sneered. “Those clans or the government—none of them are good.”
The clans wanted the same or higher autonomy, thinking they deserved it. However, how could the government just let them? If not, what was the purpose of the central government then?
These confrontations had been going on for decades; now the clans seemed to have had enough. As Khal once said, the peace had made everyone restless.
The government was also greedy for exercising its rights, and so elite clans abhorred them. The taxes imposed on clans were enormous, inciting resentment. Not to mention, they were always being kept in check.
Perhaps, more than the enormous taxes, they hated being controlled more. In any case, these two forces could not stand each other any longer.
“After your transfer is finalized, we’ll immediately return to the forbidden zone. Devion and I can’t be caught up in this mess.”
Their presence was what actually pushed the war back again and again. The two sides always probed each other to see if they were going to interfere.
Devion could not because the curse might be triggered by the chaos. He did not care, either. As long as the innocent casualties were not too many, he would not interfere.
The same could be said of Khal. He preferred to watch on the sidelines. Maintaining the forbidden zone was what truly mattered to him.
Also, if they were part of the equation, this war might escalate further or be ended early. There was no in-between.
“Your two roommates will be transferred with you,” Khal informed Ayen.
Those two guides were still under his protection.
Ayen was not surprised; he sort of expected that Lucian and Nolan would be coming with them.
He nodded, expressing his understanding. He stared at the space fissure.
“What is it?” Ayen felt an arm wrapped around his shoulders. He turned his head and met Devion’s concern.
Khal’s attention was also drawn, and he went closer to him.
“Won’t you close this fissure?” Ayen was curious about this.
Devion’s brow shot up. He glanced at Khal, then back at Ayen.
“Do you want us to?”
It directly means that they could.
“Not really. I’m just asking.”
Was Ayen concerned about these fissures? It would be a lie if he were not. However, not because of others. He was only thinking about how to trouble those clans by using these fissures.
“If we close it, they’ll know.” Khal did not lie.
These fissures were monitored; after all, they poured resources into creating them. Once an abnormal activity was detected, they would surely check for it.
And Devion and Khal’s mana was unique. It was not hard to know it was their doing.
“Then forget it.” Ayen quickly dropped the idea. He did not want to cause trouble for his two espers just because of such impulsive thoughts.
Seeing him like this, Devion and Khal exchanged glances and smiled. Khal reached out and brushed Ayen’s bangs to the side.
Ayen looked up and made eye contact with him.
“Don’t worry. We’ll have a chance to enter the fray later. You can have your fun then.” Khal encouraged him with his eyes.
It was still too early; nothing had started yet.
“I’m part of that fun, right?” Devion looked at Khal with a meaningful gaze.
Khal licked his lips and nodded.
“Of course, the three of us are involved in the fun.”
Devion’s lips finally smirked. He did not care about being protected; being dependent on Khal was also his choice. However, he did not want to be excluded, especially in matters that concerned the people he cared about.
Ayen was part of it.
Ayen watched the two, and another tug was felt in his chest. He was getting too comfortable in their presence, and the two discussing one of his biggest desires made his breathing particularly calm.
He felt relaxed. Somehow, the burdens became easier to bear. All of a sudden, Ayen began to lean on the idea that maybe he could truly, finally rely on others.
“Ayen?” Devion called, looking at him.
“Are you tired?” Khal asked, fixing Ayen’s thick coat. “Or cold?”
Ayen could not possibly be cold; the thick hide of an S-rank monster was enough for his body not to feel the slightest chill.
He did not answer but leaned his head on Devion’s shoulder.
“How about a guiding session before we leave?”
Actually, Ayen wanted to say…
He wanted to kiss them.
