Chapter 85: Visitors (1)
A week had passed since Khal and Devion had arrived in the red zone. The transfer order was also quickly approved. Other than Ayen, the two guides were also included in the report.
“Transferring again?” Lucian rubbed his head and looked at the document with a frustrated expression. He had yet to adapt to the environment, and now he was being transferred again?
Unlike him, Nolan seemed calmer and took the transfer casually. He glanced at Ayen before lowering his gaze; he already had a hunch.
“But another red zone?” Nolan pointed to this point, as though asking casually, but he was actually talking to Ayen.
Lucian, still lamenting the transfer order, began to focus on the whole content. Seeing the red mark to emphasize the zone, he almost cursed again.
“That old man! Fuck!” He was on the verge of despair, not thinking of anything else.
Ayen lifted his gaze from his plate and looked at Lucian. He was already aware of Lucian’s connection with the Commander General; he must be cursing him.
However, the commander general was not exactly that old. Since Ayen was part of the association, he heard news about him even if he did not want to.
If he remembered, he only reached 40 at the start of the year.
“It’s better. They said,” Ayen answered Nolan’s probing question.
The two already knew he was related to Khal and Devion, so there was no need to keep it a secret, especially since he was being transferred that quickly.
Before Khal requested that Ayen be transferred, he sought his opinion first. There was only one qualification. It should be near their forbidden zone. At least, it did not require a few days of travel to reach the location.
Around the most dangerous zones, green zones could be counted on one hand. However, they were out of the question. With the upcoming war, space fissures were surely scattered in these places.
Yellow Zones were fine, but they were also in a more delicate position than the green zones. Now, it only left the red zones.
These zones were the ones least likely to have space fissures; only a few of them did. Neither the clans nor the government would want these zones to be too chaotic.
And these areas were where higher-rank monsters and dungeons were located and did not need to be disturbed unless necessary.
Khal made Ayen choose where he wanted to be deployed next. It just so happened that one red zone particularly stood out.
The red zone 67.
It was located almost at the edge of their forbidden zone. Ayen had not seen this zone since Khal and Devion purposely did not take the route leading to that area last time.
When Ayen asked why the red zone was established there when Khal and Devion were already stationed inside the forbidden zone.
Khal answered him.
“It’s one of the supply points before we arrive. It has not been disbanded since dungeons still appeared in the area.”
This actually made sense, so Ayen did not ask any more, but also chose this zone.
“Oh,” Nolan could only say. What else could he say?
When Ayen had said it, Lucian also became deflated, no longer complaining. However, his grievances seemed not to have disappeared in the slightest.
This made Ayen curious. What exactly was Lucian’s relationship with the Commander General? His Esper or relative?
“You okay?” Nolan poked Lucian at his side when the latter had not spoken the entire time and only played with his food.
Ayen had already finished his, only drinking his juice. He watched the two, letting Nolan ask in his stead.
“I’m not.” Lucian sighed and put down the spoon. He rubbed his head again and leaned on the chair. He looked too dejected, so unusual.
Ayen had already known him for over a month to say that Lucian was actually easygoing most of the time. Aside from his arrogance on the first day, he was not that displeasing to the eye.
His gossipy nature was also not annoying. Ayen had begun to be reminded of Keeran; the two would surely get along once they met.
Nolan did not know of Lucian’s background yet, and so was bewildered by what was making him dejected. Wasn’t it just a transfer order to another red zone?
“Why?” Nolan asked. Instead of guessing, why not just ask?
“Because…” Lucian paused, looked at the two, and did not continue. “Ah, I don’t know. Just let me wallow in my misery first.”
Ayen and Nolan exchanged glances, shook their heads, and dropped the issue. If Lucian did not want to elaborate, why would they need to press him?
“When are we leaving?” Nolan asked on the way to their station. Lucian was not with them since he was working in the field.
“I don’t know. I won’t be coming with you.”
Ayen would be travelling with Khal and Devion. Lucian, Nolan, and a few other staff would be escorted by Renji and some guards; the two espers behind them were deployed to protect them.
Nolan did not seem surprised after hearing that. He merely nodded and fell silent. Ayen was not talkative, so the two split and returned to their work soon after.
As for Lucian, he remained in his position, not responding to alerts. Even when his phone rang and someone was calling him, he did not answer.
He was throwing a tantrum, and the person calling him probably knew, and so the calls stopped.
Lucian clicked his tongue and took his phone. Ignoring the guiding session requests, his eyes focused on the name on his screen.
He rolled his eyes and ignored it as well before accepting guiding requests.
He then pocketed the phone again and stood up. He might as well spend himself… and let him come in panic? Lucian pursed his lips and shook his head.
If he did that, then he would be proving he was a spoiled brat.
Tens of kilometers away, in a certain vehicle traveling through the earth.
“This brat…” A deep but controlled voice rang, making the others fall silent.
He put his hand on his forehead and closed his eyes. After a while, he spoke again. “Stop.” His voice was like a boom that made the driver instinctively brake.
“General?” someone asked.
He ignored them, and he opened the door amidst their exclamations.
“You go ahead.” His eyes darkened. “I need to coax someone.”
With that, he left, disappearing with the wind.
