“I wouldn’t say cold,” Logan said. “More like calm and composed. Way more than someone of your age usually is.”

“At least you didn’t say cold. Good,” Rowan said with a chuckle. “It’s not that I want to be distant. I just don’t like hypocrisy. This world runs on power. If you have it, people are drawn to you. If you don’t, they won’t even blink if you die.”

He looked at Logan, his expression unreadable.

“Love, emotion… they have no value when power is all that matters. So why should I act friendly to someone who’s only pretending to care about me?”

Then Rowan pointed at Logan gently. “But you—you’re different. You have power, but you don’t flaunt it. You’re pretending too, but not to gain anything. That’s why I’m being this way with you.”

Logan nodded. “I’m honored, Prince. That you think so highly of me.”

He gave a slight bow before continuing, “Can I ask you one more question?”

“Go ahead.”

“Why did you force Lilith to surrender? You could have overpowered her easily. So why go through all that, even if it confused everyone?”

Rowan’s calm eyes narrowed slightly.

“I’ll answer that. But first,” he said, “tell me—what do you think of Lilith Starwind? What kind of person do you think she is?”
