Chapter 43: Staying Together!

The observation platform remained quiet for a moment longer, the forest canopy stretching endlessly beneath them like a living ocean. Wind moved gently through the leaves, carrying the faint glow of drifting motes and the distant sounds of the settlement resuming its rhythm.

Then Lyla straightened, the weight of confession settling back into something firm and controlled.

“Come,” she said softly, “There is still much for you to see.”

She turned and led them onward into the settlement. They passed artisan groves where Dark Elves shaped living crystal into armor and jewelry, their fingers weaving mana and material together with breathtaking precision.

They crossed platforms where healers worked quietly, tending to wounded rangers and scouts injured in recent skirmishes, soft green and violet light washing over bandaged limbs.

Farther still, they passed research terraces, vast open spaces grown around ancient trunks, where alchemists and enchanters collaborated beneath rune-lit canopies to create new tools for battle and protection.

As they approached one such terrace, the air shifted.

Jax felt it first, an old, steady mana signature, refined and disciplined, worn smooth by centuries of study rather than battle.

Lyla slowed, “She should be here,” she murmured.

At the center of the terrace sat an elderly Dark Elf woman at a long, root-grown table. Her skin was a deeper shade of indigo, etched faintly with age lines, and her silver hair was braided intricately down her back, threaded with tiny glowing leaves.

Her ears bore multiple ceremonial rings, each etched with sigils of achievement. She was carefully decanting a glowing liquid from one vial to another, hands steady despite their age.

“Hello,” Lyla called gently.

The woman paused, lifting her head. Her eyes, once bright violet, now softened to amethyst, focused first on Lyla, then shifted to Jax, and finally to Hydra.

For a heartbeat, her composure cracked.

Her brows lifted slightly at that. “You know my name.”

“I make it my business to know those who matter,” Jax replied.

Danica studied him for a long moment, then sighed, the sound carrying a mixture of relief and exhaustion. “Then you know why I am here.”

Lyla stepped forward, “Danica was Eileen’s mentor. She taught her alchemy…and restraint.”

Danica’s grip tightened on her staff. “Hearing about what happened, it seems like I failed at the second part,”

Hydra, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, stepped closer. Her usual playful ease softened into something sincere as she looked at the elderly Dark Elf.

“No,” Hydra said firmly. “You didn’t.”

Danica blinked, surprised.

“You taught her everything you could,” Hydra continued. “What she chose to do with that knowledge, that was her decision. You don’t get to carry that weight just because you cared.”

The old woman’s lips trembled faintly, “She was like a daughter to me,” Danica whispered. “Brilliant. Stubborn. So full of fire. When Lyla restricted her work, Eileen came to me… furious, hurt. I told her patience mattered. That survival mattered more than vengeance.”

Her eyes closed briefly, “She smiled at me. Said she understood.”

Jax’s gaze sharpened slightly. “People like that often smile when they’ve already decided to ignore you.”

Danica let out a bitter, quiet laugh, “Yes. I see that now. Even in my old years I’ve learned quite a-lot. Things change so fast,”

She turned to Hydra, studying her more closely, sensing the immense power beneath her calm surface. Then she bowed, not as an Elder to a guest, but as one wounded soul to another.

“Thank you,” Danica said simply. “For saying that.”

Hydra smiled, small but genuine, “Anytime.”

Lyla placed a hand gently on Danica’s arm. “We’ll need you at the Council tomorrow.”

“I will be there,” Danica replied. “Whatever judgment comes… I will stand by it.”

They left her then, the terrace fading behind them as Lyla guided Jax and Hydra farther upward, toward the highest reaches of the settlement.

The path narrowed, becoming more private. Guards posted at discreet intervals bowed and stepped aside as they passed, recognizing the destination without question.

Finally, they arrived at a towering tree whose trunk split into elegant spirals near its crown. Nestled within was a secluded treehouse grown seamlessly from the living wood, its entrance framed by softly glowing vines and rune-inscribed leaves.

“This has been prepared for you,” Lyla said. “Privacy wards, sound dampening, and spatial reinforcement. You’ll be undisturbed.”

Hydra peeked inside, eyes lighting up, “Oh, this is nice.”

Inside, the space was warm and expansive, far larger than it appeared from the outside. Living wood formed smooth walls and curved ceilings, while soft moss-like flooring responded gently underfoot.

A wide sleeping platform dominated the far side, draped in silken leaves and woven fabrics that glowed faintly with calming enchantments.

Lyla turned to Jax. “Rest well. Tomorrow will be… complicated.”

Jax smiled faintly, “When isn’t it?”

She returned the smile, then inclined her head to both of them before departing, the entrance sealing softly behind her.

Silence settled gently over the treehouse once Lyla was gone.

Hydra stood near the center of the room, looking around as she clasped her hands behind her back, tail flicking faintly before curling in on itself, her emerald eyes refusing to meet Jax’s for more than a heartbeat.

“…So,” she muttered, clearing her throat, “this place is really well made.”

Jax watched her quietly, amusement and warmth flickering in his gaze. The nervousness rolling off her was obvious.

“You’re uncomfortable,” he said gently.

Hydra stiffened. “I’m not, ” She stopped, then sighed. “Okay. Maybe a little. I just… I don’t really know how to act right now.”

Jax stepped closer, close enough that she could feel his presence without him touching her. “You don’t have to act at all.”

She finally looked up at him, cheeks faintly darkening. “You changed everything for me,” she said softly. “You freed me. Gave me control. Let me be… me. And now it’s just us and I, ”

Her words faltered but Jax didn’t let the silence stretch.

He reached out, pulling her smoothly into his arms. Hydra gasped softly in surprise, then melted against him almost instantly, hands clutching his cloak as if afraid he might disappear.

Jax tilted her chin up and kissed her, slow, steady, and warm. The tension in her body unraveled all at once, her breath hitching before she leaned fully into him, eyes fluttering closed.

When he finally pulled back, he rested his forehead against hers, holding her securely.

“You’re safe,” he murmured. “With me.”

Hydra smiled, shy but radiant, arms wrapping around his waist as she nestled closer.

“…I know,” she whispered, and kissed him back.
