When they heard Gust’s answer, everyone was so astonished they were left speechless and didn’t say a word for a long time.
Seeing their reaction, Gust asked, puzzled, “What, is it a bad idea?”
Soon, someone said, “Gang matters are settled within the gang. That’s a timeless rule. To think the esteemed Gust family would stoop so low as to involve the police. It’s a disgrace to the entire underworld.”
Gust snorted coldly, unable to agree with their outdated thinking. He explained, “Jason has superpowers, and he has many capable people under him. Besides, his recent actions go far beyond gang activities. It’s more appropriate to call him a terrorist. Since this isn’t an internal gang dispute, what’s wrong with me calling the police for help?”
Someone else questioned, “So what if you call the police? Jason has run circles around the cops in New York and Los Angeles. More than a thousand police officers and soldiers have died at his hands. Even if you call them and they agree to get involved, it’ll just give you a few more seconds to breathe before you die.”
Gust said, “You’re mistaken. The government’s hatred for Jason is far greater than ours. As long as I report that Jason is sending people to kill me, the government will definitely make a move.”
Before the naysayer could retort, Gust continued, “Because everyone, every law enforcement agency, wants to take down Jason, America’s most wanted criminal. Whoever takes him down will become famous overnight, a national hero, an idol to the public. Their future career path will be wide open. Whether they stay in law enforcement or go into politics, it will be a huge amount of political capital.”
“Faced with such immense benefits, the government and its agencies will surely be willing to take the risk. Besides, do you really think their past failures represent the government’s true strength?”
“I firmly believe government researchers are working around the clock, analyzing Jason’s abilities and searching for his weaknesses. All the arms manufacturers in the country are concentrating their efforts on developing a weapon or method that can kill him.”
“In the face of such a vast state machine, an individual’s power is always fragile. This is why I dare to provoke Jason.”
Gust’s words were logical and well-reasoned, leaving all the bosses deep in thought.
Faced with Jason’s aggressive advance, none of them wanted to give up the interests they held. Jason was a wild wolf, the kind that could never be fed enough.
Although Gust’s method sounded a bit unreliable, too idealistic, and lacked solid proof, it was very suitable as an attempt to resist Jason.
There were still three days until the dinner.
If Jason didn’t come within these three days, or if he came and was repelled by law enforcement, it would mean the experiment was a success.
They would then follow Gust’s example, refuse the invitation after three days, and hide out in their own headquarters.
But if Jason came within these three days and killed Gust, it would mean the experiment had failed.
They would just pretend they knew nothing and attend the dinner on time as scheduled.
This way, no matter who won—Jason or the government—they would be in an unbeatable position.
In just a few seconds, the crowd had sorted out the pros and cons of the situation. Their previous mockery and sarcasm vanished, replaced by flattery for Gust.
Heh, this reckless kid really did something useful.
……
In the evening, the accomplices who had been out wilding all day all returned.
In the villa, they sat around the dining table for dinner, every one of them flushed and beaming with joy.
A day out on the town seemed to have baptized both their bodies and souls.
With a quick glance, Jason could tell what they had been up to—drinking, gambling, and womanizing. For men, it was rarely anything else.
The only odd one out was John. He had actually brought back a pit bull and was sitting in his chair feeding it dog food.
After dinner, everyone sat on the sofa chatting, and Jason told them what had happened that morning.
Hearing Jason’s account, the group was filled with anger and immediately prepared to grab their weapons and wipe out the Mexican gang.
Jason held up a hand, signaling for them to sit down. He then said slowly, “You don’t need to get involved in this. Gust isn’t an idiot. Since he has the guts to provoke me, he must have a plan he believes is a sure win.”
“None of you have superpowers, and Christine’s ability is purely for healing. Considering tonight’s operation could be dangerous, I’ve decided to go alone. You all can just stay here at the ranch.”
As soon as he finished speaking, they all shook their heads in refusal as if on cue.
Harley said anxiously, “Those Mexican drug lords are all filthy rich. Tonight’s operation is sure to be a big score. If you handle it alone, who knows when we’ll get our superpowers. So please, let us do it.”
Franklin chimed in, “Yeah, Christine has healing abilities. Even if we get into trouble and get hurt, she can at least save our lives.”
Jason’s expression faltered for a moment; he realized he had forgotten about the superpower issue.
One superpower cost five hundred million dollars. Under normal circumstances, it would take them months to save up that much. But everyone here was impatient. Seeing that Jason and Christine already had superpowers, they were naturally anxious and wanted to seize every opportunity to make money.
Jason nodded in understanding, then asked tentatively, “So, we all go on the operation tonight?”
Everyone looked at each other, seemingly unsatisfied with this proposal.
Christine thought for a moment and voiced their thoughts: “While going together ensures safety, the profits would have to be split several ways. It would still delay the time until we get superpowers. That outcome isn’t good for individuals or for the group.”
“How about this: for tonight’s operation, besides me, the rest will draw lots to choose two people. Jason will accompany them to provide protection. This way, we can ensure their safety while allowing the two chosen to earn more money, get their superpowers sooner, and improve the group’s overall combat effectiveness.”
After hearing Christine’s suggestion, the others considered it for a moment and thought it was a great idea, nodding in agreement.
Jason said, “Since you all agree to this plan, let’s start the draw.”
With that, he went into the kitchen, found four chopsticks, and broke them into different lengths.
Returning to the living room, he held the intact ends towards the group. “Draw lots. The ones with the longest and the shortest chopsticks are in!”
The four of them came forward and drew chopsticks one by one.
Harley’s was the longest.
John’s was second longest.
Franklin’s was third.
David’s was the shortest.
David and Harley were successfully chosen. The two of them happily went back to their rooms to prepare weapons and ammunition.
Franklin shook his head in disappointment, while John, indifferent, went outside to walk his dog.
Ten minutes later, the two came back down, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying two automatic rifles and twenty magazines each.
“Let’s go!” Jason, having changed his clothes, said as he dangled his car keys from his finger, empty-handed.
