Chapter 282: Chapter 282 Handle
A hidden safehouse in the outer suburbs of Houston.
In a brightly lit room sat an oval conference table. Loki occupied the head of the table, his left hand cradling the Tesseract while his right held the scepter. Seated along the sides were several people—all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents currently under his mental thrall.
“This place is excellent. And these people… how did you find them?”
Loki was in high spirits. Phase one of the plan had been completed successfully—smoother than he had even imagined, in fact. The humans of this planet were even more incompetent than he had anticipated.
A high-ranking agent replied, “S.H.I.E.L.D. has many opposition forces domestically; these people are just one of them. To execute a mission of this scale, we require sufficient manpower.”
Loki nodded, scanning everyone at the table. “Now, I can share the plan with you.”
He raised the Tesseract high. “You all know the Tesseract possesses the power to open a gateway through space. At a specific coordinate in the cosmos, a massive army of mine is waiting.”
He looked toward Dr. Erik Selvig. “Your task is to use the Tesseract to open the portal at the designated coordinates, allowing my army to enter Earth. And then… this planet will belong to us. When that time comes, you will all be celebrated as heroes.”
Hearing that last sentence, the eyes of those under his control flared with a mix of fanatical devotion and worship. Loki was deeply satisfied by their gaze; it was something he could never truly obtain in Asgard. Those shortsighted fools only ever looked at his father and brother that way. No one ever cared for him.
Dr. Selvig took the Tesseract and led a group of subordinates out of the room. Loki leaned confidently on his scepter, already lost in a beautiful fantasy. Once he took Earth, what should his palace look like? Should he model it after the Golden Chamber?
Forget it. I can’t say I admire the old man’s aesthetic.
“Sir, there is one more thing you must know,” An agent suddenly interrupted.
“Hmm. Speak.”
“You cannot underestimate S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Be specific.” Loki’s interest piqued; he was all ears.
The agent said worriedly, “Are you aware of nuclear bombs? They are weapons of mass destruction capable of annihilating an entire city in an instant. S.H.I.E.L.D. possesses many of them and has the authority to launch them independently.”
Hearing this, Loki smirked with disdain. “I, too, possess weapons that can destroy a city in an instant. But my goal is not to destroy Earth—it is to rule it.”
Hearing this, the agent felt more reassured and continued, “Besides nukes, S.H.I.E.L.D. has the Avengers Initiative. This plan involves several superheroes, each with formidable strength.”
“Your Earth has heroes? Tell me about them,” Loki said mockingly.
Heroes? In his thousands of years, Loki had encountered the heroes of countless planets, and those failures were never a match for him.
“First is the legendary WWII hero, Captain America…”
The agent proceeded to detail the histories and abilities of several heroes. He believed the Hulk posed the greatest threat, so he described him most thoroughly.
Gradually, Loki’s contempt began to fade. He never imagined that a low-level civilization—one that hadn’t even broken out of its own solar system—could birth such monsters. If his goal were merely to destroy Earth, he wouldn’t fear them; he’d seen plenty of planet-killing weapons.
However, his mission was to rule Earth and retrieve the Time Stone; the use of mass destruction was strictly forbidden. But the Chitauri army he led was one of the lowest-tier forces in the universe. In a head-on collision, could they truly defeat these Avengers?
Loki fell into deep thought. Moments later, a cold smile played on his lips. He had an idea. He gripped the scepter tightly.
Even the strongest fortress crumbles from within. Perhaps I should meet these superheroes myself.
It would be best if he could make them kill each other. At the very least, he would keep them so distracted that they couldn’t stop the invasion. Loki shared this plan with the agent, wanting a local’s perspective.
After a detailed analysis, the agent confirmed the God of Mischief’s strategy was sound, but his expression still held a lingering doubt.
“Actually, besides S.H.I.E.L.D., there is another organization on Earth that is far larger and more dangerous.”
“What! More powerful than the government agencies?” Loki frowned. Something felt off.
“Yes.” The agent’s expression was complex; even under Loki’s mind control, he remained wary of the Joker organization. “If we don’t solve the problem of the Joker organization, your dream of ruling Earth will ultimately fail.”
“The Joker organization…” Loki murmured. He seemed to recall his oaf of a brother mentioning that name once. “Does this organization have superheroes too?”
“Superheroes?” The agent let out a hollow laugh and shook his head. “Super-villains are more like it.”
“The Joker organization is a global criminal empire. Their official membership alone is nearly two hundred thousand. These aren’t just guys punching a clock for a paycheck. They are fanatics—zealots of the organization who would gladly throw their lives away for a mission. Their combat effectiveness far exceeds that of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.”
Loki: “I’ve seen many such organizations. But no matter how hard ordinary humans try, there is an unbridgeable chasm. For you to fear them this much, they must have other extraordinary traits.”
The agent nodded. “The Joker organization has dozens of ’Core Members.’ They each govern a region, and every one of them is a powerhouse capable of taking on a thousand men alone. Among them, some can teleport, some can control all electronics, some can raise the dead, and some can freeze entire rivers…”
“And their leader?” Loki asked.
“The leader of the Joker organization is named Jason Walter. He is S.H.I.E.L.D.’s greatest nightmare. His power is Energy Absorption. He can absorb any external energy into his body and then convert it into other forms of energy to release.”
“I don’t know how strong your army is, but unless you can destroy an entire city in a single heartbeat, no matter how dense your artillery fire is, you’ll just be recharging his batteries.”
“As long as he has energy, Jason is a perpetual motion machine. He never tires, and therefore, he never loses.”
“…”
Upon hearing this, Loki went completely silent.
The existence of the Hulk had merely caused him a bit of worry. The Joker organization’s core members made him realize this war would be incredibly difficult. But the existence of Jason… that effectively declared his plan to rule Earth bankrupt.
While the agent was talking, Loki had been looking for a loophole, a breakthrough. But by the time the agent finished, he found none. Instead, he felt more certain than ever that he would fail.
“This Jason… is a problem,” Loki admitted, genuinely conceding the point.
If the Chitauri army met Jason head-on, it would be a death sentence for every last one of them. If he wanted to rule Earth, he had to find another way to handle Jason and the Joker organization.
