Chapter 219: Chapter 219 Favela
Evening, in the Brazilian favela.
Banner was lying on his bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
The blood sample was sent to New York. He wondered if Mr. Blue had made any progress.
If the final answer was ’NO’ again, Banner really didn’t know what he would do.
Beep! Beep!
The laptop chimed.
Banner immediately scrambled up and sat at the computer. The message was from Mr. Blue.
Mr. Blue: Good news. After several experiments, the number of gamma cells has significantly decreased.
Seeing this, Banner was stunned with happiness.
He steadied his breathing and quickly asked: Then… Can my friend be cured?
Mr. Blue: Yes!
Banner let out a sigh of relief. The huge stone that had been crushing his heart for half a year finally lifted.
Mr. Blue: But… I need more detailed data. Contact levels, gamma concentration, cell infection rate, etc.
Banner shook his head, frustrated. The stone that had just landed was immediately hoisted back up by a crane.
That data was all stored in the university lab. How could he get it from Brazil?
Banner: No, the data isn’t here.
Mr. Blue: Where is it?
Banner hesitated, unsure how to reply.
He looked up at the photo of his girlfriend, Betty, on a newspaper clipping. He grit his teeth and finally made a decision.
He had to go back to the US, find the data, cure the ’Hulk,’ and then get back to Betty.
Banner: The data is in a place far away.
Mr. Blue: Get the data to me as soon as possible. Otherwise, your friend is in danger.
Banner: I will!
He closed the computer, immediately set off for the factory to quit, and to ask the boss to settle this month’s wages.
To sneak back into the US from Brazil, he would need a good amount of money.
……
Jason hovered in the clouds, looking down at a dimly lit, dilapidated city.
He took out his phone to check his location. “Porto Harbor. Yep, this is it.”
He slowly descended, landing in a corner of the city. Chloe sent him a message through the Joker Community.
She had searched the Pentagon’s files and finally found Banner’s hiding place, sending him the factory’s location.
He opened his navigation app. The target was in a favela nearby.
But this was a mountainous area, the roads were complex, and it was full of run-down, low-rise buildings.
Following his GPS, and using cash to ask for directions, Jason spent a good half-hour before finally finding the soda factory.
It was getting dark. The workers had left. Only one middle-aged man in a suit was locking the gate.
“Hello!”
The man turned his head: “Blah, blah, blah…”
He spoke for a while, but Jason didn’t understand a single word.
He pulled out his phone, opened a voice translator app, and they were finally able to communicate.
Learning Jason was looking for Banner, the boss didn’t hesitate and took him to Banner’s room.
On the way, the boss became chatty.
He kept talking about what a good guy Banner was, how capable, how hardworking, but unfortunately, his small factory couldn’t keep such great talent.
Just a little while ago, Banner had settled his wages and was preparing to leave Brazil tomorrow.
After winding through the streets, they reached Banner’s room, and the boss left.
Jason walked up and knocked.
“Woof! Woof!”
A dog barked inside.
A moment later, a wary voice called out: “Who is it?”
“A friend,” Jason said in English.
The room went silent. Banner seemed to be hesitating.
He didn’t have many friends in the US, and no one knew he was hiding in Brazil. Who was this man outside?
After a short while, he finally opened the door.
Jason said, “Hello, Dr. Banner.”
Seeing the familiar face in front of him, Banner’s expression froze.
Jason! Oh my god! How could it be him!
At this moment, Banner would rather have seen the soldiers who were hunting him than this demonic face.
Banner tried to slam the door, but Jason quickly blocked it with his hand.
“Dr. Banner, this is our first meeting. I have no ill intentions.”
He pushed, but the door frame didn’t budge.
Banner quickly let go and stumbled back, his heart rate starting to spike, his breathing growing heavy.
Jason walked in slowly, smiling calmly. “Relax, relax… I’m just here to talk. If ’it’ comes out, this conversation is over.”
Seeing Jason’s acting good, Banner cautiously calmed down. He took a few deep breaths, bringing his soaring heart rate back down.
Jason wandered into the room as if he owned the place and found a clean chair to sit on.
“Got any water? It was a long flight. I’m thirsty.”
“Soda?”
“Sure.”
Banner opened the fridge, got two sodas, and put them on the table.
Jason popped the cap with his thumb, took a sip. “Not bad. Have a seat.”
Banner pulled up a chair and sat far from Jason, gripping his own soda bottle tightly, not daring to make eye contact.
“What… What do you want? I don’t know you.”
“You don’t know me? Then why are you so scared?” Jason finished his soda and put it down.
“I mean, we’ve never met, we have no connection. Why did you come all the way to Brazil to find me?”
“Why? Because of ’it,’ of course.” Jason pointed at Banner’s chest.
“I’ll be direct. I’m very interested in the ’it’ inside you. Ever consider a change of scenery? Come work for us. I guarantee, the benefits and the work environment will be far beyond your imagination.”
Hearing this, Banner shook his head decisively. “No! Absolutely not!”
“So firm. You won’t reconsider?”
Banner just shook his head silently.
Jason sighed. He regretted the outcome, but he wasn’t surprised.
He was a main Marvel character, after all. Their morals were always squeaky clean. No matter how much they suffered, they’d never stoop to working for a place like the Joker organization.
Jason took out a business card and put it on the table. “Fine. But if you change your mind, or if you run into trouble, you can always find me. The Joker organization’s door is always open to you.”
Banner kept his head down, not even lifting his eyes. He clearly had no interest in the card.
“Heh.”
Jason gave a dry laugh, stood up, and prepared to leave.
“Wait!”
As he reached the door, Banner’s voice called out from behind.
Jason turned. Banner had lifted his head slightly. “Why… Why do you do it? Why do you kill so many people?”
A cold smile formed on Jason’s lips. “Simple. Because it’s fun.”
“Is killing the only thing that makes you happy?”
“Of course not!” Jason took a few steps closer. “Stealing, robbing, kidnapping, cuckolding people… all of these make me happy.”
Banner’s eyes narrowed. “That’s all crime! It all makes innocent people suffer!”
“Hmph. Haven’t you heard? Happiness is built on the suffering of others.”
Hearing this, a layer of anger appeared on Banner’s face.
Jason smiled. “You don’t agree?”
Banner stood up, shook his head, and said: “I can’t agree at all. But… I’m willing to go back to New York with you.”
