Chapter 243: Chapter 243 Die
The pistol lay right at Banner’s feet, but neither of them moved immediately. Instead, they stared at Jason with eyes full of distrust.
“Relax, I’m a man of my word.”
Jason smiled faintly. “As soon as you make a choice, I will release the other person immediately. I never break a promise.”
“What exactly do you want?” Betty cowered behind Banner, only showing half her body.
“I told you, there’s no deeper meaning. It’s just a game,” Jason said with a satirical edge. “I just want to see what choice a loving couple like you makes when life and death are on the line.”
“A game?!” Betty’s face filled with rage; she obviously loathed this game involving human lives.
Jason remained calm, looking straight into her eyes. “What are you afraid of? The outcome is going to be exactly what you and I are both expecting anyway.”
His words were barbed, making Betty very uncomfortable.
She tilted her head to steal a glance at Banner’s expression. He looked solemn, his eyes fixed on the pistol at his feet, saying nothing.
“Choose! Quickly! I don’t have time to waste on you!” Jason flipped his hand palm up, and a pale blue energy ball appeared in his grasp.
“One-minute countdown! If time runs out and you haven’t made a choice, you both lose. Betty will be blasted into dust by this energy ball, and Banner will sleep forever. Who lives and who dies… the choice is in your hands.”
David set the countdown on his smartwatch.
The click, click, click of the timer was incredibly eerie in the dark night; every tick seemed to strike directly at their souls.
Betty looked conflicted, her fingers curling tightly into Banner’s clothes.
Her black boots shifted a few centimeters, but after a moment of hesitation, she couldn’t summon the resolve to die.
She looked up, meeting Jason’s mocking smile.
Betty’s face flushed slightly red as a sense of shame spread from the bottom of her heart to her entire body.
She glared at Jason, eyes spitting fire, her anger rushing straight to her head.
“Fuck!”
Betty roared, shoving Banner aside with all her might, and snatched up the pistol from the ground.
“Betty!”
Banner snapped out of his daze and tackled her to the ground in terror, knocking the pistol away.
The two wrestled on the ground in a tangle; anyone who didn’t know better might have thought they were screwing right there in the dirt.
Jason smiled and exchanged looks with his two partners; David and John also wore expressions of disdain.
Banner had just woken up from anesthesia, so his entire body was weak and limp.
But he was a man after all; his weight and strength were far greater than Betty’s.
He quickly gained the upper hand, pinning Betty to the ground by her shoulders.
“Betty!” Banner’s eyes were bloodshot, his expression a mix of emotion and guilt.
“I’m so sorry I doubted you just now! It turns out I didn’t love the wrong person. You are a good girl. Go back to your father and live a good life.”
Betty’s lips trembled, her eyes red and filled with reluctance and love.
Banner smiled faintly. “Don’t worry. With the Hulk inside me, I won’t die.”
Betty relaxed her arms, then used her upper body strength to try and sit up.
Banner let go, and the two quickly embraced and kissed.
This kiss represented a farewell. Both threw themselves into it, their hands clutching the other’s back tightly as if trying to merge their bodies into one.
“Oh my god! They look like two seals fighting over a grape!” Jason shook his head, feeling like he couldn’t watch anymore.
After a long while, their lips parted.
Banner was still savoring the moment when he felt a sharp pain in his crotch.
“AHHH!!!”
A precise knee strike left Banner in agonizing pain.
Betty seized the opportunity to push him to the ground, scrambling over to pick up the pistol.
“Whoa.” Jason smiled; this plot twist was getting interesting.
Betty retreated to a safe distance, then raised the pistol and aimed the muzzle at Jason.
“Hmph!” Jason smiled. “You should know the consequences of firing that, right?”
Betty didn’t answer, glaring at him. “You said if I chose suicide, you would release Bruce.”
“Of course!”
“Although you are a demon, you are also a prominent figure. You should keep your word.”
Jason mocked, “In a way, us ’scum’ honor our word far more than you high-society types.”
“I understand.” Betty wiped the expression from her face and slowly aimed the muzzle at her own temple.
The movement was so slow, it looked as if someone was physically holding her back.
“No way… did I actually misjudge this?” Jason had an amused look on his face.
“Betty! NO!” Banner screamed from his knees on the ground, the pain in his groin preventing him from standing up.
“Bruce, I know you won’t die, but a living death is more painful than dying.”
Betty looked at Banner, speaking with serious solemnity. “From every angle, you have more value in living than I do. Goodbye!”
“NO!!!”
Betty closed her eyes, two lines of clear tears flowing down, and pulled the trigger with all her might.
CLICK!
The crisp sound was as loud as a thunderclap.
An empty chamber!
Banner’s screaming stopped abruptly, as if someone had choked him.
Betty snapped her eyes open, looking at the empty gun in confusion.
Clap… clap… clap…
Slow applause rang out.
Jason clapped, looking at Betty with disbelief.
“I didn’t expect that. I really didn’t expect that. To think there are actually idiots in this world willing to die for their lovers.”
Betty’s heart beat wildly; it took her a moment of dazed silence to recover.
She threw the pistol away and retorted sarcastically, “A person like you will never encounter that in your entire life.”
Jason didn’t refute her, simply smiling without a word.
Betty calmed herself and asked sternly, “I have made my choice. According to the rules of the game, you should let Banner go. I hope you will keep your promise.”
The smile on Jason’s face grew even more brilliant, as if he had just thought of something hilarious.
“Of course, I pride myself on my integrity!”
He stepped forward, his right hand gripping the air, and an energy sword appeared in his grasp.
Clang, clang, clang!
With a few crisp sounds, the chains on Betty and Banner were severed.
“Betty!” Banner stood up, wanting to embrace his lover, but an energy sword separated the two.
“Dr. Banner, you are free. But Ms. Betty, technically speaking, according to the rules of the game, is already a dead woman.”
Banner turned his head to glare furiously at him.
“Don’t glare at me. Even if you let the Hulk out, I’m not afraid. You should cherish this hard-won freedom.”
Realizing she had essentially been sentenced to death, Betty’s eyes dimmed, and she waved her hand reluctantly.
“Bruce, go! Don’t worry about me!”
Banner shook his head in anguish, his agitated expression screaming that he would rather die with her than live alone.
Jason said with dissatisfaction, “Dr. Banner, Ms. Betty belongs to me now. Please leave immediately.”
Banner looked ready to die; he completely ignored Jason’s words.
“Heh, in that case, I’ll have to send you off personally.”
After speaking, he suddenly reached out and slapped Banner on the shoulder. A pale blue sphere instantly enveloped him.
“NO!”
Banner struggled with all his might, but his human strength couldn’t break the energy ball.
“Scram!”
Jason waved his hand, and the energy ball whooshed toward the direction of Manhattan.
Betty watched Banner disappear, but her expression suddenly changed. “That direction is…”
“Hahaha, Ms. Betty is quite smart.” Jason smiled wickedly.
“You… you are fucking bastard!” Betty’s face flushed red with anger, her whole body trembling.
“Thank you!”
Jason accepted the assessment happily.
