Chapter 214: Chapter 214 Important
On the Triskelion headquarters’ helipad, an armed helicopter took off, gradually disappearing into the horizon. On the ground, evacuating personnel filed out of the underground parking garage in an orderly convoy.
In the Director’s office, Hill stood alone by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring at the endless stream of vehicles outside. The worry creasing her brow revealed her state of mind.
Jason was coming for them, solo, and S.H.I.E.L.D. was already pushed to the brink. But at this critical moment of life and death, she didn’t even have anyone by her side to discuss countermeasures. A mountainous pressure weighed on her shoulders, making it almost hard to breathe.
“They’re all gone. I don’t know if that’s a blessing or a curse,” Hill muttered to herself, her head bowed.
Knock, knock, knock.
A knock came at the door. A fully armed agent entered the office.
“Director, all agents are assembled at their battle stations. All fighter jets are airborne and on standby. Also, your personal transport is waiting on the helipad. You should evacuate now.”
Hill gathered her thoughts, shaking her head slowly. “The battle hasn’t even started. How can the commander evacuate? Even if I leave, it will be after the battle is over.”
“But, ma’am, if the situation turns, it might be difficult for the helicopter to get away.”
Hearing this, Hill considered for a moment. “Alright, here’s the plan: have the helicopter on standby. If the situation truly becomes irreversible, I will evacuate early.”
“Understood. Any other orders?”
Hill sat down in her chair. “Is the military deployment complete?”
The agent replied: “S.H.I.E.L.D. is defending the island perimeter. The military is deployed off-island. The military’s tanks, armored vehicles, anti-aircraft missile launchers, and 500 soldiers are all in position.”
“Very good. As soon as the evacuation is complete, lock down the bridge and enter combat status!”
“Yes, ma’am!”
……
A little over ten minutes later, the thousands of civilian staff were all safely evacuated, and the bridge connecting the island to the mainland slowly raised.
While this gesture was useless against Jason, for the anxious agents, it was a good placebo.
About ten minutes after the evacuation was complete, Hill received new intel: Jason was less than 100 kilometers from Washington.
She immediately relayed the information.
Upon receiving the news, all agents and soldiers tensed, their hearts leaping into their throats. They even subconsciously held their breath.
A moment later, a dull boom echoed from the sky.
A figure dropped from the clouds, descending slowly to hover in mid-air.
“Jason spotted! Jason spotted!”
The recon units, binoculars pressed to their eyes, immediately shouted into their comms.
Hill stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, her fists clenched. “Kill that son of a bitch,” She seethed.
The words had barely left her mouth when the off-island rocket launchers and anti-aircraft artillery opened fire!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The earth shook with the roar of artillery! Missile after missile, trailing long plumes of fire, flew from all directions toward the figure in the sky.
A single missile lacked the power to harm Jason, but such a terrifying quantity, all stacked together, could instantly vaporize him.
Jason hovered in mid-air, his expression indifferent.
Seeing the barrage, he smirked. “Fools. Treating me like a target.”
With that, energy erupted from his body, and in the next instant, he vanished.
The first wave of attacks all missed, which was undoubtedly a bucket of cold water on the soldiers.
Hill held her communicator, calmly issuing orders: “Recon, do you have eyes on Jason?”
The recon units stationed around the island immediately reported in.
“Negative!”
“Negative!”
Hill said, “Stay alert! The moment you spot him, signal with a flare!”
……
His upgraded superpower gave Jason a burst of speed that was practically teleportation over short distances. As long as he wasn’t pinned down by concentrated fire, it was incredibly hard to kill him.
His internal energy was low, so Jason burst from cover and headed straight for the military’s artillery line, preparing to absorb some energy.
“Jason spotted!” The recon unit immediately fired a red flare.
Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!
Seeing the trails of red smoke in the distance, Hill instantly understood Jason’s intent.
She immediately gave the order: “Jason needs energy! Execute Plan C! I repeat, do not fire artillery!”
The soldiers stationed off-island were elite. Although they were terrified to see Jason flying at them, they suppressed the urge to fire their cannons and calmly executed Plan C.
Plan C was a contingency for when Jason was low on energy: all artillery was forbidden. Instead, they were to use special tranquilizer rounds and flexible steel nets to contain him.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Tranquilizer grenades landed on the position, releasing clouds of white smoke. The soldiers donned gas masks and loaded magazines filled with the special tranquilizer rounds.
Jason saw this and immediately enveloped himself in an energy shield.
Thwip!
Suddenly, a strange sound came from his side. A steel net flew out and wrapped around him. The next second, dozens of syringes shot out, only to be blocked by his energy shield.
After a moment’s surprise, energy surged from his body, shredding the steel net.
“To think they’d use tranquilizers and nets…” Jason’s expression held a hint of appreciation. “But these are just petty tricks. They’ll never work.”
With that, he accelerated toward the artillery position.
Along the way, a dense barrage of nets and tranq darts flew at him, but all were blocked by the energy shield.
When he reached the artillery position, heavily armored soldiers immediately surrounded him, fighting desperately to stop him.
However, even with his energy at rock bottom, Jason’s strength was no match for ordinary humans. He charged into the crowd, wreathed in energy. With simple, fluid movements, he took out more than half of the soldiers.
Blood and severed limbs littered the battlefield. Agonized screams echoed into the sky.
A few minutes later, the soldiers, despite their iron will, finally broke. They threw down their weapons and scattered.
Jason, drenched in blood, strode over to where the artillery shells were stored.
He wrapped his hand in energy and swung, slicing a row of shells into pieces. Explosives and propellant spilled onto the ground.
He converted his energy to heat, igniting the explosives. The artillery position erupted in a massive fireball, but the flames had barely appeared before Jason greedily absorbed them all.
In the S.H.I.E.L.D. office, Hill listened to the distant explosions and the chatter on the comms, then sighed heavily.
So, that plan was useless after all.
She gave a self-deprecating laugh.
She had known the outcome before the battle even began, but the existence of Plan C had given her a moment of unrealistic hope.
And now, that hope was shattered.
“Notify the helicopter. Prepare for takeoff.”
……
The energy from the dozens of exploding shells had left Jason about 30% full.
He slowly floated about a hundred meters into the air, his gaze fixed on the Triskelion headquarters in the distance.
Suddenly, his eyes swept the building and he spotted a helicopter urgently taking off from the roof.
“Anyone leaving in a helicopter must be important.”
Energy erupted from his feet, and he shot toward the helicopter.
Just as he crossed onto the island, the roar of fighter jets filled the sky, and a barrage of missiles streaked toward him.
