Chapter 274: Chapter 274 Hammer
Chloe was the undisputed model worker. She didn’t have a single word of complaint about being sent to Africa, but the other two immediately started trying to sabotage each other.
Harley: “Honey, I think David is the perfect fit. Ultrasonic waves are crucial for geological surveying. If he goes to Africa, we’ll find that vein in no time.”
Not to be outdone, David shot back: “I think teleportation is much more suitable. Ultrasonics can only tell you what’s hidden in the mountains, but teleportation can actually pull it out. Harley is practically a natural-born master prospector.”
To escape the African trip, the two completely threw away their dignity and started shamelessly hyping each other up. Since it didn’t involve them, the other members just sat back and laughed, treating it like a comedy show.
Jason, however, had heard enough. “Since you both think so highly of each other, why don’t you go to Africa together? With your two powers working in tandem, the results will surely be extraordinary.”
At this, the other members roared with laughter, while Harley and David stood there dumbfounded.
“Honey… I have so much work to do back home,” Harley said, resorting to her damsel in distress act.
David got the hint but still tried to drag someone else down with him. “Boss, what about Chloe?”
Jason waved him off, not buying it. “Enough. It’s settled. Alex will take over your duties here. As for Chloe… thinking it over, she can’t leave the U.S. just yet. We’ll wait until the vein is actually found.”
Jason’s word was final. Harley pouted, her face a mask of unhappiness. With the leadership of the Africa base decided, the next issue was the personnel.
“The official membership of the organization has surpassed 50,000. We’ll leave 20,000 to maintain the domestic business, and the remaining 30,000 will be moved to Africa. We also need a massive amount of surveying and mining equipment. Chloe, you’re in charge of this. It needs to be completed within six months, and S.H.I.E.L.D. cannot catch wind of it.”
Chloe: “Understood!”
The meeting ended, and the members said their goodbyes before logging off one by one. Harley, full of resentment, turned to give Jason a piece of her mind, but she noticed Chloe hadn’t logged off yet. Her expression was strange.
Jason asked, “Something else?”
Chloe: “Sir, something just entered the atmosphere!”
“What?!” The few remaining in the room were baffled. Something entered the atmosphere? Was it a meteorite?
Chloe explained: “This object appeared very suddenly, and it’s extremely small; even NASA only just spotted it. Its appearance is affecting the surrounding magnetic fields and is accompanied by violent meteorological activity.”
Fast, small, warping magnetic fields, and affecting the weather. What the hell is that?
Jason frowned in thought. Suddenly, a spark of realization hit him. Right. How could he have forgotten that guy? Based on the timeline, it was about time for him to make his entrance.
Jason: “Have you calculated the crash site?”
Chloe: “Yes. New Mexico!”
Without a second thought, Jason snapped: “I’m going there. Keep a close watch on this. Notify me the second the exact coordinates are confirmed.”
Chloe acknowledged the order and logged off.
The situation was so sudden that Harley forgot her anger. She asked worriedly, “Honey, is this thing important?”
Jason paused for a few seconds, then shook his head. “It doesn’t belong to Earth, and it doesn’t belong to us. But its appearance is a sign.”
Vermouth: “A sign of what?”
Jason sighed. “A sign that the cosmic wars are about to begin.”
“Cosmic wars!” The group looked at him in shock, finding it hard to believe.
Harley: “Honey, are you going now?”
Jason: “Yeah. I want to see it with my own eyes.”
Harley: “Then I’m coming with you.”
Jason: “Forget it. There’s no danger on this trip.”
Harley walked over, grabbed his arm, and gave it a gentle shake. “I’m going to Africa soon anyway…”
Jason gave a helpless smile and patted her head. “Alright then! Go change. We leave in thirty minutes.”
*
The two soared through the vast, boundless sky, encased in energy orbs at a steady pace. Harley was beaming; the smile never left her face as she pushed the worries of Africa to the back of her mind. Since the organization had stabilized, they had both become incredibly busy; their alone time over the past year could be measured in hours. This romantic night was precious to her.
Jason was sensitive to her mood. Thinking about how little time they spent together and his cold decision to send her to Africa, he felt a twinge of guilt. He didn’t rush her, letting her play and fly around as if trying to make up for lost time.
They wandered across the country all night until the sky began to turn grey with dawn. Harley, satisfied with the night together, took the initiative to get back to business.
“Did Chloe send the location?” She asked.
“Yeah.”
“Then let’s get over there!”
“Right.”
Pushing the speed to the limit, the two soon arrived at the crash site. Hovering in mid-air, the massive crater in the ground was impossible to miss.
“What’s that?” Harley began her descent. When she was less than twenty meters from the center of the crater, she finally saw it clearly.
It was a square iron hammer.
Harley landed on the ground, looked up at the sky, and then back at the hammer with a confused expression. She could understand a meteorite falling from the sky, but a hammer?
She pulled out her phone, took a few photos, and sent them to the group chat. The chat window immediately filled with question marks. Harley gave a few brief replies and looked up to see Jason staring at the hammer with a dead-serious expression. She leaned in but couldn’t see anything extraordinary about it.
“Honey, do you know what this hammer is?”
Jason gave a complex smile, neither nodding nor shaking his head. “Have you ever heard of Norse mythology?”
Harley: “A little bit, but nothing specific.”
Jason asked, “Do you know Odin? Thor?”
Harley nodded. “Of course. Odin is the All-Father, and Thor is the God of Thunder!”
Jason reached out and touched the metal. “This hammer is Mjolnir. The Hammer of Thor.”
“What?” Harley’s jaw dropped so wide you could fit an apple in it. “Are you joking? That’s just a myth. It’s not real.”
Jason shot back, “If it’s not real, where did the myths come from? Did the Norse people just get bored and invent a pantheon of gods for the hell of it?”
Harley didn’t know how to argue, but she still shook her head vigorously, refusing to believe it. Jason didn’t bother explaining. He reached out and gripped the handle of Mjolnir.
“…”
He pulled with one arm, veins bulging in his neck, but the hammer didn’t budge an inch. A pale blue energy shrouded his hands as Jason channeled his entire power reserve into the grip. He tried several times, his face turning red, but Mjolnir remained unmoved.
“Phew… expected,” Jason sighed, not at all discouraged.
“You can’t pull it out?” Harley found it bizarre. With Jason’s current power, he could play ping-pong with a tank. How could he not lift a hammer?
Jason shook his head. “You try.”
They swapped places. Harley put every ounce of strength she had into it, but the result was the same. “Let me try one more thing.” She let go and activated her power, trying to warp it out of the ground. But Mjolnir was imbued with divine power; Harley’s ability failed instantly.
“That’s impossible… this…” She stared at her own fair hands.
Jason gave a heartless laugh. “Believe me now?”
Harley frowned, still half-skeptical.
“Let’s go. Let’s find a place nearby for breakfast. It’s nice to look at, but we aren’t worthy to pick it up. At least not yet.”
Jason didn’t linger; he turned and walked away. Harley looked back three times before finally giving up and following him.
In a nearby small town, the two found a restaurant featuring local specialties and chose an outdoor table. Handing the menu to the waitress.
Jason picked up his coffee and smiled.
Harley said. “If that really is Thor’s hammer, why would it be on Earth?”
Jason searched his fragmented memories but found nothing and shook his head. “I don’t know. Maybe he dropped it.”
Harley wasn’t satisfied with that answer. “It’s Thor’s weapon; he’s definitely going to come looking for it. Are we going to have to fight the God of Thunder?! We’ll be dead for sure!”
Jason: “Why dead? The gods in mythology aren’t omnipotent. They age, get sick, and die.”
Harley shook her head hard. “Even if they age and die, they’re still gods. We’re just humans.”
Jason continued to recall his memories and comforted her. “Gods aren’t that scary. And we aren’t exactly ordinary humans. Have a little faith in yourself.”
Unlike Jason, Harley actually had a sense of faith and held a certain reverence for the divine. She wanted to say more, but a pretty waitress arrived with their food. Giving a 20-dollar tip, Jason focused on his breakfast.
“Eat up. We’re heading home after this. We won’t be crossing paths with Thor for a while. If you’re really that afraid of gods, just work hard in Africa.”
“I guess I have to,” Harley said, picking up a slice of pizza with a heavy heart.
Jason ate quickly, finishing the pizza in three minutes, then stood to the side to smoke. The town was beautiful and quiet, with a population of maybe a thousand. While not wealthy, life here was leisurely—none of the high-speed pressure of the big city. You could slow down and savor life.
This is the real good life. I hope I can live like this someday. Jason thought wistfully, a cigarette dangling from his lips.
“Is that…”
Suddenly, a barefoot, blonde powerhouse of a man walked toward them from a distance. He looked famished, his eyes staring hungrily at the roadside diner.
Heh, what a coincidence.
As the man approached, Jason took the initiative to call out, “Hey. Did you get robbed or something?”
The man, hearing someone address him, hurried over. “I am…” He looked hesitant, as if he had never asked anyone for a favor in his life.
“It’s fine. If you don’t mind, breakfast is on me.”
“Thank you.” The man looked grateful. He was clearly starving.
