When Banner woke up again, he found himself lying on a damp rock face.
A clear stream flowed past him. As far as he could see, he was surrounded by a dense forest, and Jason was long gone.
Banner sat dazed on the rock, shaking his throbbing head. He had no memory of what happened last night, or whether or not Jason had been killed by the Hulk.
After splashing his face with stream water to wake up, Banner, holding up his torn pants, walked through the forest to a muddy path.
In the distance, a small fruit truck approached. Banner excitedly ran forward to get help.
He flagged down the truck. The driver was a kind, white-haired old man.
He looked at Banner’s situation and asked, ” Young man, are you lost in the forest?”
“Yes. Can you tell me where this is?”
“This is Guatemala!”
“What?” Banner was dumbfounded.
Hulk had run wild all night and actually sent him to another country.
“I’m taking this fruit to town. Need a lift?”
“Yes, thank you!”
Banner was overjoyed and quickly climbed into the passenger seat.
On the way, by talking to the driver, Banner learned the details of his location. Guatemala borders Mexico, and Mexico borders the US. This meant that to get back to the US, Banner would have to cross illegally through Mexico.
Luckily, at this time, the US-Mexico border didn’t have a wall, or Banner’s plan would be dead on arrival.
……
General Ross and his special forces returned empty-handed. His face hadn’t cracked a smile the entire way.
Not only that, Blonsky, completely oblivious, kept asking about the Hulk, irritating him even more.
With an outsider present, he couldn’t speak plainly, so he just brushed him off, citing lack of clearance.
The plane landed at the Air Force Base. As soon as he got off, Ross went to the Pentagon to report on the situation.
It took a few hours to finally deal with those idiots.
Ross let out a breath of relief. Just as he walked out the door, he saw Blonsky sitting in a chair, still in his combat fatigues. He clearly hadn’t even changed.
“You really are a stubborn man.”
Blonsky stood up and said respectfully, “My apologies, General. That monster is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever encountered in my military career. I desperately need to know the truth. If you won’t tell me, I’ll catch Banner myself and force him to talk…”
Suddenly, Ross said flatly, “That was Banner.”
“What?”
Blonsky stopped mid-sentence. His face froze, looking like a complete idiot.
Ross stepped closer and repeated, word for word, “You didn’t mishear. That monster is Banner.”
After a long silence, Blonsky asked with a serious expression, “General, what is going on?”
Ross thought for a moment, then asked, “Do you want to know the truth? Do you want to be stronger?”
“Yes! I’m already dying for a rematch with that monster!”
He didn’t hesitate, didn’t think. It was as if the pursuit of power had become a biological instinct.
Ross was very satisfied with his decisive answer.
“Come with me. What I’m about to tell you is top secret.”
Top secret! Blonsky frowned, a feeling of anticipation rising in him.
The two walked toward a classified lab in the Pentagon. Ross spoke as they walked.
“During WWII, to defeat the Axis, the US military secretly developed many weapons. One was the ‘Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Program,’ with the goal of creating super-soldiers.”
Blonsky nodded. “I know. Captain America was the most successful result of that program.”
“Correct. After the war, the program was officially shut down, but it’s been continuing, off and on, ever since.”
“My thinking is different from the weapons R&D crowd. They like building new toys, like Stark’s Iron Man suits. I prefer to build stronger soldiers.”
“Banner was the scientist on this program. The experiment was only in its initial stages, nowhere near application.”
“But he was arrogant, overconfident. He started human trials on his own. The experiment had an accident…”
Ross paused. Thinking of the green monster, he smiled. “Or maybe he actually succeeded. Either way, the Hulk is the property of the US military!”
Blonsky digested this stunning news. “If that’s the case, why did Banner run?”
Ross said, exasperated, “He’s a scientist, not a soldier.”
“I see.” Blonsky nodded in understanding.
As they spoke, they entered an underground laboratory.
Ross pointed. “Go to the changing room and strip. I’ll get the serum.”
With that, he walked into a secure storage room and signed his name on a requisition form.
The room wasn’t large, but it held the most classified, core research. Any single item in here would be enough to shock the world.
Ross, syringe in hand, went to a low-pressure container and drew two vials of a pale blue liquid—a liquid that held the secrets of human genetics.
When Blonsky, undressed, walked into the procedure room, Ross and the researchers were already waiting.
The experiment was about to begin. Ross said seriously, “I’m giving you the lowest possible dose. If you feel any discomfort, you call it off immediately.”
Blonsky nodded, lay on the surgical chair, and was strapped in.
A researcher brought out the syringes. “You’ll get two shots. One in the muscle, one in the spine. The second one will hurt a bit.”
Seeing Blonsky nod, he took a shorter syringe and gave him the intramuscular injection.
For a special forces soldier, this level of pain was nothing. Blonsky completed the first injection without flinching.
The surgical bed flipped over, leaving Blonsky face down, his spine exposed.
The researcher took a syringe, a full 20 cm long, and slowly inserted it into his spine.
An excruciating pain shot through him. Blonsky clamped his mouth shut, refusing to make a sound.
He knew that if he screamed, Ross would stop the injection, and this chance to become stronger would be gone forever. This was the most valuable opportunity of his life. He had to endure it, no matter what.
Through sheer willpower, Blonsky didn’t even whimper, and completed the super-soldier serum injection.
The experiment ended. He sat up on the chair and clenched his fists, finding no sign of increased strength.
Seeing this, the researcher explained, “It takes 24 hours for the serum to take effect. You just need to rest.”
