The pitch-black night was eerily quiet. The once-bustling East Side of Manhattan had been reduced to a wreckage of ruins.
Looking at the tragic state before him and the casualty reports, Ross knew that even with the culprit Blonsky dead, this mission was a failure.
However, as the supreme commander of the operation, Ross was not vexed.
He hastily directed the pilot to land the helicopter near Blonsky’s corpse.
As long as the body remained, research could continue, and redeeming himself by destroying the Joker Organization would be just around the corner.
“Hurry up! Collect every single fragment of the body and every drop of blood. Do not miss a thing.”
“Be careful to separate them for preservation. Hulk’s blood is green; Blonsky’s is black. Do not mix them up!”
His daughter’s corpse was nearby, but aside from some initial grief, Ross paid it little attention, instead focusing entirely on directing the scene with utmost seriousness.
For a man blackened by authority, his career—or rather, power—was far more important than the life of a relative.
Collecting the body was simple enough, but gathering every scrap of flesh and separating the blood was no easy task.
Ross mobilized over a thousand military and police personnel, taking five full hours to collect everything and seal it into military-grade metal crates.
After working through most of the night, the soldiers were exhausted. Only Ross remained high-spirited, even puffing on a cigar.
After a final check confirmed everything was correct, he finally gave the order for the troops to withdraw.
“Hello!”
A flippant voice rang out.
All the soldiers froze as if struck by lightning, their bodies stiff and faces blank. It took a moment before they turned their heads to look into mid-air.
Jason, Harley, John, and David—the four high-ranking members of the Joker Organization—were staring at them with smiles.
That look of longing was just like a starving man staring at soft, freshly baked bread through a glass window.
“Thank you, everyone. Thank you for your hard work!”
Jason scanned the crowd, a faint smile still on his face.
The cigar fell to the ground. Ross roared in desperate rage, “Jason!”
“How rude. Don’t forget about me.”
A disgruntled voice came from elsewhere.
Everyone looked back to see Harley, who had teleported over at some point, her small hands resting on the metal crates.
“Honey, I’m heading back first.”
Jason waved his hand, and Harley vanished along with the metal crates.
After half a night of busy work, they had only done it for someone else’s benefit.
The soldiers lowered their heads, daring not to speak or even breathe too loudly.
As long as they kept their lives, who cared if the cargo was stolen?
“Jason, are you behind all of this?”
Ross lived up to his rank as a leader; he immediately understood the sequence of events and dared to question him loudly.
“Yes!”
Jason nodded generously, admitting it.
Hearing this, the faces of the high-ranking military officers turned ashen.
Jason extended his hand, condensing an energy ball.
“Thank you for your hard work. As a reward… please, get some good rest!”
He flipped his wrist, and the energy ball fell toward the ground in freefall.
Boom! Rumble!
A blinding light illuminated the sky. For a moment, all of New York was as bright as day, followed closely by the sound of the explosion and the shockwaves.
A few seconds later, the light faded, and the explosions and vibrations died down.
Where the group had just been standing, a crater a hundred meters in diameter appeared. Every building within a one-kilometer radius had been wiped clean.
*
Back at the new base, all the researchers were busy.
Dr. Sterns couldn’t wait to open the metal crates and extract Blonsky’s blood for experiments.
Blonsky was the first successful transformation using Gamma technology. Although he had been injected with the Super Soldier Serum beforehand, his genes still held immense research value.
All the instruments in the lab were running at full power. Dr. Sterns paced back and forth, observing the experiments, his excitement overflowing.
Jason stood by his side, with Dr. Sterns occasionally explaining things to him.
But different trades are like different worlds. Jason watched for a while but couldn’t make heads or tails of it, so he asked, “Doctor, at the current pace, when will the second-generation serum be ready?”
Dr. Sterns stopped and calculated in his head. “Shortest is a week, longest a month.”
Jason nodded. This speed was within his acceptable range.
But Dr. Sterns’ next sentence poured a bucket of cold water on him.
“The second-generation serum won’t be perfect either; we’ll need to continue experimenting. There is no such thing as a perfect serum in this world. Gamma research is a long road. It might take decades, or even a lifetime.”
Hearing this answer, Jason looked dissatisfied.
Decades? A lifetime? That was unacceptable to him.
Seeing this, Dr. Sterns quickly explained, “Sir, what I mean is that Gamma is a massive subject worth studying for a lifetime. But if it’s for emergency battlefield use, I believe the second-generation serum won’t disappoint you.”
Jason nodded, feeling slightly better.
It made sense. No matter how strong he was personally, he couldn’t force scientific progress.
In terms of research, one had to trust the authorities. Besides, science was something that had no end.
Jason wandered around for a bit, then said, “If we need multiple experiments in the future, you can’t stay in New York.”
New York had too many people and too many eyes. Even in the most remote corner, they couldn’t escape the surveillance of the military and the government.
They had luckily escaped last time because Blonsky was stupid.
But if they were discovered again, what awaited them would likely be missiles.
Although the current Jason could tank a missile, many of his partners and these researchers didn’t have that ability.
“Hurry up and get ready. I’ll be sending all of you abroad soon.”
“Abroad?” Dr. Sterns looked unhappy.
Leaving aside family reasons, with the generous salary from the Joker Organization, he naturally wanted to satisfy himself with crazy spending and showing off wealth. How could he live it up if he went abroad?
Dr. Sterns and the other researchers gathered around to complain.
They had parents and children; working abroad was really too inconvenient.
If New York wasn’t an option, they could just move to a sparsely populated state.
Unfortunately, Jason had always been autocratic in his actions and didn’t consider their feelings.
“This matter is decided. Just execute the order.”
The group lowered their heads, daring not to speak further.
Jason changed his tone to comfort them. “I’m doing this for the safety of the experiments. You don’t want to worry about military missiles hitting us every day, do you? Don’t worry, you’ll be freer and more comfortable abroad. If you really can’t bear to be apart from your families, I can send them over too.”
The researchers looked at each other. Finally, Dr. Sterns asked, “Alright, understood. Where are we going?”
Jason thought for a moment and smiled. “Africa!”
