Chapter 16: Next Step
It didn’t take long for them to leave since I’m not in the infirmary, but now it is time to move away from here.
“I think we should head back to the house for a little while,” I suggest with a cautious tone.
“Why not head for another class?” Tess asks curiously.
“Just trust me on this.” I respond.
She goes silent for a moment.
“Alright, let’s get going then,” she says with a calm tone.
We open up the door slowly so that it is possible to look before we make any moves. Nobody is currently in the hallway, making it the perfect opportunity for us to make our way to the exit.
It is surprising quiet throughout the halls which means everyone should be in their classes.
Upon reaching the door I can just barely hear footsteps coming.
“No reason to sit here, let’s go,” I say while pushing the door open.
The door pushes open and we begin to make our way down the steps. Nobody is outside since the people were inside the buildings around us.
Quickly we made our way back to the house before anyone could spot us outside of the academy.
I don’t know if there is any rules about the academy or needing to stay there, but I’m not too interested. This is something that I’ve decided already on my own.
Fighting… learning to fight could be beneficial but I’m not too into the idea of working with kids who want me dead.
It is going to be a lot better for me if I just head out when my injuries recover. The world is always going to be harsh anyway, what’s the difference if I just take the leap now.
“Are you sure it is a good idea for you to be away from the infirmary right now?” Tess asks with concern.
“I think this is the right decision. I have no reason to doubt what I asked.” I respond with confidence.
Wriggle.
The feeling in my arm begins to act up once again, except it feels like it is going further up my arm and into my shoulder.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
I can feel my heartbeat begin to pick up as a strange feeling enters my chest. Almost like it is beginning to tighten all of a sudden.
Grip.
I can’t help but grab onto my chest as the feeling begins to get more intense with each second. Pain is slowly starting to disappear from my ribs as the pressure gets worse.
“Is everything okay Liam?!” Tess begins to ask with panic in her voice.
It feels impossible to speak so I continue to let this run its course as the pain completely disappears from my ribs. Not long after I can feel the pressure disappear as well.
Did this infection just heal the damage I took from the fight earlier? I didn’t think it would help me with such a thing but I guess that’s new.
“I’m fine.” I respond.
A look of relief appears on her face as I stand up from the bed. It felt like I never had any injuries to begin with, like it was all part of some dream.
I extend both my arms out to stretch before walking over to the window to see if anyone else is coming.
“I don’t understand what is happening right now, weren’t you hurt,” Tess says with confusion in her voice.
“I have healed. The next step of my plan is possible now,” I reply with a calm tone.
“So it is true. You are planning to leave,” Tess says while standing up from the bed herself.
I don’t remember telling her that I am planning to leave this place altogether… how would she know about that? She might be useful if it is what I think it is.
“How did you know that?” I question while continuing to look out the window.
She stays silent as I continue to gaze out the window.
Nobody is coming for us right now, but it isn’t going to take long for them to notice. Alice isn’t dumb by any means so she’ll send people to look for me soon.
“I’d say it is part of your power, but you don’t have to answer. I’ll just head out without you anyway,” I speak with a serious tone.
“Wait… I can see things,” Tess replies with nervousness in her voice.
“I know. But I’m unsure of what it is that you can see,” I say with curiosity in my voice.
“Briefly into the future,” She replies.
A power like that isn’t going to be able to leave easily… unless they don’t know about it.
There’s no way Alice doesn’t know, how could it possibly be a secret? I don’t think Tess kept that hidden away from her or she doesn’t know how strong it is?
This is all a bunch of guesses with no evidence to back any of it up.
“I’m going to leave, don’t mention anything about me to her. I’d also keep your power a secret,” I say with a serious tone.
“Can’t I—” She tries to speak.
“No, you can’t come with me.” I interrupt her while heading for the door.
I take one look around the room and see a raggedy old black cloak with some scratches in it. Without thinking I put it on over my black shirt and begin to make my way out of the house.
There is no reason to be slow so I begin to run for one of the walls on the eastern side of the courtyard.
Hyup!!
Without any problems I manage to jump up and grab one of the edges of the wall, slowly pulling myself up. As I reach the top I take one last look back towards the courtyard.
Tess is standing in the center looking towards me, sadness clearly in her eyes.
I wasn’t even meant to be here in the first place.
I hop over the wall and begin to run without looking back anymore. Darkness surrounding me from every direction as I get further and further away.
