Chapter 67: A Rainy Day
Pitter. Patter. Pitter. Patter.
The sound of rain distracts everyone from any potential conversations as we listen to it hitting the ground outside.
“You can stay with them while I keep an eye out,” Zeno says while standing up.
His pistols form back within his hands, slowly emiting a white light around each one. I can see the serious look in his eyes, something about this weather is bad.
“Good luck,” Airi responds softly.
The door opens and then closes behind him.
Before I can speak, Airi starts again.
“I’ll make some food for everyone, just keep an eye on everything,” Airi says with a smile.
I just give her a nod as she walks past me, leaving me alone with Amelia once more. I could feel her eyes lingering on me now since she doesn’t need to worry about the other two watching us.
I don’t really know much about amelia, especially about what is under the mask. She says they are just a bunch of scars, but I don’t think that’s what it is.
She also has quite a bit of interest in the infection within my arm.
Something that even Airi doesn’t look at much when it is just the two of us… Maybe I should be on guard around her a bit more. She did originally attack me without giving me the chance to explain a single thing.
“Does the infection ever hurt you?” Amelia asks with curiosity in her voice.
“Not really. I think that it just tends to feel really weird,” I answer while staring at my left arm.
At least I don’t really recall it hurting much since I actually got through my awakening. The light hasn’t really hurt me as much since then which is the main issue I originally had with it.
There’s a lot that I don’t really understand about the infection itself though. How it is capable of speaking with me like this, how it is held back, and why me?
“My scars didn’t come from the zierel… So maybe that’s why I find myself staring at your arm more,” Amelia says with a bit of sadness in her voice.
“Where did they come from then?” I question softly.
“I don’t think I’m ready to tell you yet, but soon I will,” Amelia answers.
“That’s fine,” I say with a calm tone.
The sound of rain pattering on the ground outside and the rooftop give me a bit of peace. Something I didn’t think could exist in a world like this anymore.
It tells me that the world isn’t completely gone yet and that maybe we can come back from it all.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
My heartbeat is something I am getting used to hearing more, especially since I ripped it out awhile ago.
I’m happy my heart isn’t just gone after everything I went through to awaken my power. That was probably one of the biggest gambles I took.
There was never a guarantee that it would give me the opportunity to awaken. I just took it upon myself… I’ll never do it again either.
Tearing through my own flesh and bone is one of the most painful experiences I ever went through. It is a miracle that I didn’t pass out from all of the pain, but here I am.
Alive in the world without a single person I once knew.
“Your friends could be alive; I wouldn’t rule out anything with them at least,” Celeste says with a bit of positivity.
I really do have to give you guys some credit… I can’t be positive about everything like you.
“I’m not positive about anything but I don’t like a moppy guy all the time,
” Celeste responds with a small chuckle afterwards.
I think I’ve been a lot better with it since meeting Airi and now Amelia too. I still feel like complete garbage but it isn’t overwhelming me like it used to.
Her voice doesn’t seem to appear again as the sound of footsteps approaching take my attention.
I turn my head to see Airi coming in with a tray, a couple of plates on top of it. The smell of a nice meal is all I can notice as she sits the tray down on a table.
“It isn’t anything special, just something for us all to eat,” Airi says with joy.
Rice, some pieces of chicken, and vegetables doesn’t seem like it is something basic either.
“It looks great,” Amelia responds with a cheerful tone.
I wait for a second as Amelia grabs her plate, but she doesn’t take a seat next to me this time. She walks across the room to a spot that we can’t really see her anymore.
But I grab my plate and begin to eat.
“She just doesn’t want us to see her face, don’t take it personal or anything,” Airi says with a casual tone.
I stop eating for a moment.
“I didn’t. Amelia will show us when she is ready,” I reply with an understanding tone in my voice.
We don’t really talk too much after that since the meal is hot, that’s the best way to enjoy it.
I don’t know if I would have all these home cooked meals if I stayed back at the academy. What do they even eat there?
Alice didn’t strike me as the type to feed a bunch of kids slop.
Maybe they did have some ways of cooking food there as well, but I don’t think it would’ve kept me there. They were still behind in terms of fighting when everything happened.
I didn’t see a single student trying to help against the zierel within the walls. Actually, I didn’t even see any teachers helping out either which is strange.
I’ll have to talk to Airi about that at some point since it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense.
Wouldn’t they have rushed out to help defend the students against the attack? I don’t think every teacher was corrupted by the infection like miss rose.
