Chapter 32: Memories From Another Life (2)
My descent into the tower begins as I finally start to walk down the steps.
Surprisingly the air going down is quite cold, even though the light below should be emitting quite a bit of heat.
But on another note, the walls are quite bare as I continue to make my way down the stairs. Not a single painting or decoration hangs along the walls.
It feels completely empty.
I don’t know why I even expected anything to be hanging along the walls when it doesn’t make sense for a tower to have it. I think it would also give some life to something that doesn’t need it.
It could even be a distraction for new people who enter as the guard or whatever.
This really is weird to be experiencing through Aether’s eyes. I don’t understand a lot of what’s going on or why I’m able to move on my own at times.
A lot of it is quite confusing to me… Not that I can get out of this current predicament at the moment.
“Everything is mysterious when it comes to our power. It isn’t surprising in the least. But I can promise that my power is worth having,” Aether speaks up with a serious tone.
“Right, I’ll just take your word for it,” I respond while continuing to head down.
Upon reaching the bottom I can see a giant ball of light, the sun to be exact. Humans would be blinded by the mere sight of it, even looking at it from a distance is bad.
Here it is held in place by a bunch of mysterious chains that don’t seem to disintegrate, how interesting.
The room is also quite big; filled with a bunch of different equipment and some spot to sleep as well.
“This place is as beautiful as I remember,” Aether speaks up positively.
“I’m glad you can enjoy this because I don’t know what I’m doing or what I’m looking for,” I reply with a bit of frustration.
I just don’t like being in a place with no idea of what’s going on or what I’m doing. I’ve never liked the idea of such a thing… Ever. I’d rather avoid it if possible.
So much has happened since my family died and I don’t know if anyone else will ever deal with what I’m seeing. Or do people have similar sights when they awaken their powers?
I don’t really know.
With that last thought I walk over to the sun and take a closer look at everything around it. A giant hole sits below it with nothing really in sight.
“Look for my sword. I know it is in here somewhere,” He suggests.
I listen to his suggestion and begin to look around the room for any sort of sword that I can find. It doesn’t take very long for me to find it either.
Sitting to the right of the sun I find a sword with a dragon like hilt, the tail wraps around it until it reaches the bottom of the handle.
The blade itself is an obsidian black with a bright silver streak going through it.
This is definitely his sword… It is beautiful. I can’t believe this guy is gifted with so many amazing things.
“I’m a strong guy, what can I say?” Aether interrupts with confident tone.
“Is the sword the source of the power that I’m looking for here?” I ask with curiosity.
“I’d say it could be. I’m not entirely sure,” He answers calmly.
I can feel the power beginning to flow through the sword as I continue to hold it. It is certain that this is definitely his source of power in this memory.
As I hold the sword I begin to focus on where it is coming from. The area around me begins to fade away as a figure begins to form in the distance.
Immediately I look down at my body to see that everything is normal again, including the infection on my arm. But in front of me I can finally see the appearance of the figure becoming clear.
The appearance I saw in the mirror…
Aether is standing before me with a big smile on his face and his arms at his waist.
“You definitely look a lot smaller than I expected!” He shouts with an energetic tone.
“Thanks. You look about the same as I saw in the mirror,” I reply while looking around.
The darkness around me is now a field similar to what I saw when I first opened my eyes originally. No sun is shining this time around though.
“This won’t be the last time you see my memories, that much I’m certain about. But at least you found the source of my power, it won’t be easy every time,” Aether says with more of a serious look in his eyes.
“I’ll have to find it again?” I ask.
“To get stronger you’ll need to dig into the source again. But that’s a problem for another time,” Aether answers as everything finally starts to disappear.
Everything disappears in an instant after a few moments and then I find myself looking up at the ceiling of my new room again.
Airi hovering above me with tears streaming down her cheeks.
The pain from my chest is no longer there anymore but I can see that blood is still all around me. I turn my head slightly towards my hand, the heart is no longer there.
I don’t really know where my heart could be since I ripped it out… So where is it?
Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
My thoughts are interrupted when I hear my own heartbeat loud and clear.
“I can’t believe it… You’re alive..,” Airi says with relief as she hugs me.
“I’m alive. I think I’ve awakened my power now too,” I reply softly.
The infection in my arm isn’t really reacting much right now but I can definitely feel a change in my body.
“Why didn’t you just wait for me to help?” Airi asks with sadness in her voice.
