Chapter 4: What It Means To Suffer
I’ve never really gotten hurt too bad before, not even a broken bone. This pain was unbearable and honestly I just want everything to be over.
I could feel the blood running down my arm and onto the floor with each passing moment. All while the monster is still making its way back towards me.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
My heartbeat is even louder than before and I can feel my whole body shaking… Probably from fear if I had to take any guesses.
BAM!!
The front door broke open, hinges were completely destroyed from whatever broke through it.
“What the hell!?!” Dad shouts with concern in his voice.
I try to speak but the words don’t seem to come out. All I can do is look towards him as the monster slowly approaches. But it isn’t moving towards me anymore…
Thud.
Everything in his hands fell onto the ground as his footsteps get closer to the monster. Just barely I can see him swing something towards it.
Pierce!!!
It looks like an axe just went into its neck but it’s hard to see since the candles went out.
Splurt!!!
Blood begins to pour out from the monster and I can hear it starting to hit the floor.
I’m glad he came back just in time to save me from this thing… It hurts so much. I really was hopeful that it wouldn’t show up like it did. I could’ve swore that dad had just left so why is it here so quickly?
They haven’t attempted to come inside here once since the two weeks passed by. Could it sense that Dad is gone…
It knew I was the weaker link. That’s the only logical answer here, why else would it attack now of all times? None of this makes any damn sense to me otherwise.
“Grahhhh—!” Dad lets out a scream as the sound of flesh being torn echoes off the walls.
Clang!
A small lantern falls onto the floor, just barely giving enough light to see what’s going on in the room. I could see one of its claws in my father’s stomach.
“L…Liam! Run! Get the girls and run!” He manages to shout while grabbing onto the monsters arm.
I look down at my arm, blood rushing down it with each moment. “I…need to help them…” I say quietly to myself as I force myself to stand up.
The pain jolts through my arm even more than before but I force myself to continue standing. After a few seconds I start to walk towards the steps, eventually making it to where the lantern fell.
I quickly grab it with my good arm before rushing up the steps. My body doesn’t really want to move but I’m forcing it with all the adrenaline I have coursing through my body.
It’s only a matter of time before it wears off.
I can feel my balance fading as I start to fall towards one of the walls.
Thud!
My shoulder bashes into the wall but I keep pushing forward until I reach my parents room.
“M…Mom! Open up the door…!” I barely manage to shout as I fall against the door.
The world is falling apart… I’m falling apart… We are all falling apart together.
Click. Creeek.
The door opens up as Mom catches me.
“My sweet boy… What happened to you….” Mom says as tears begin to stream down her cheeks.
“We…have to go…” I respond weakly as blood drips onto the floor.
Clang!!
The lantern falls onto the ground as the last of my strength finally fades away.
“Liam!!” Mya calls out with worry in her voice.
Everything was slowly starting to fade around me until I heard the screech’s once more. There was more than one this time and it sounded like it came from behind my mom…and Mya…
SLASH!!!
My eyes immediately open wide as I see claws go right across my sisters back.
“M—Mya!!!!!!” I shout as tears begin to stream down my face.
I fall backwards as Mom turns around to see her other baby was scratched from behind. Nothing stops here though… Does it?
Laying on the ground I’m forced to watch everything unfold in front of me, forced to suffer a fate that nobody ever deserves to have.
Tear!!! Slice!!! Tear!!! Splatter!!!
I can see the claws going through my sisters skin with ease as blood begins to paint the floor around her.
It didn’t take long after for my mom to join her… It’s claws pierced right through her chest before it tore her open in front of me.
“No…no…no… This isn’t real….” I say while my vision begins to blur.
I’m just having an awful nightmare… I will wake up and everything will be back to normal. We’ll be downstairs having breakfast as a family once again.
Wake up. Please wake up. This is just a nightmare and everyone is perfectly okay…
Step. Step. Creeeek.
Footsteps begin to get closer to me as the sound of the monsters claw drag against the floor.
My arm won’t even move anymore and I’m not waking up because this isn’t a nightmare. This is the real world.
This is what it means to suffer. My family is dead. I’ll be joining them soon enough.
I reach out with my good arm for my mom and sister one more time as I see the monsters legs standing before me. The lantern is still next to me…
Light. With the last bit of strength I have, I pick up the lantern with my good hand and slam it against the monsters leg.
SMASH!!!
I manage to slam it against its leg and within seconds it begins to burn the creatures leg.
“SCREEECH!!!!” It screeches with a higher pitch than before as it begins to fall back towards the window.
The leg still appears to be burning.
SHATTER!!!
It falls out the window and a few of the others begin to follow it.
Step. Step. Step.
Footsteps are coming towards me again, but it doesn’t sound anything like the monsters.
I don’t think it matters… I’ve lost a lot of blood. I won’t survive to see whoever it is anyway.
