Chapter 49: The War We Never Knew About
Airi comes over and takes a seat next to me, still maintaining the same smile on her face.
“Do you know anything about the war Liam?” Airi asks, her smile suddenly gone.
“I don’t, at least I don’t remember you telling me about one,” I answer while crossing my arms.
“Then maybe it is best I tell you a bit about it,” Airi says.
“Kind of sudden, isn’t it?” Amelia questions while taking a seat.
“No. I think it is something you both should know about,” Airi answers without hesitation.
I don’t really know where this is coming from but it probably is important to know about. Most of the stuff I’ve learned from Airi has been important in some way or another so I don’t have a problem with her telling me more.
“Then I’m ready whenever you want to begin,” I speak up while leaning back in my chair.
(Airi begins to explain.)
A long time ago the light bearers first discovered that the zierel existed within our realm. It wasn’t a big deal since we found a solution quick enough to keep them at bay.
Eventually this resulted in them disappearing for quite some time before barriers broke.
Our people didn’t understand what was happening since we did everything in our power to contain them. This meant that someone was working with them from the inside.
This was the first trigger that got pulled, the one that began the war between the light bearers and the zierel.
It resulted in a lot of deaths, a lot of light bearers didn’t get the chance to see the war come to an end. I didn’t want their lives to be in vain so I gave it my all to help purge them from our realm.
But even then it wasn’t enough to push them back after everything we did.
They kept adapting and coming back stronger each time… Until our leader at the time came up with a solution. He banished them to the human realm where they are constantly held back by the sun.
It was the greatest weapon we had. The zierel weren’t able to harm anyone or bring war back to our people.
“What were they trying to accomplish with the war?” Amelia asks, interrupting Airi for a moment.
“The zierel wanted to take over the realm. To bring our home into eternal darkness, but we didn’t want to let that happen,” Airi answers before continuing.
We lost hundreds of light bearers and couldn’t stand to lose anymore. So banishing them with one last push was the only opportunity we had.
Our kind is quite powerful but the zierel are also capable of evolving if they manage to get away. That’s exactly what happened with them as well, they evolved.
Then came the issue with the sun that suddenly disappeared from the human realm… Well it is there but not I guess.
It isn’t really easy to explain what’s happening with it right now since I am kind of out of the loop. Light bearers higher up on the totem pole are looking into the situation.
We are the temporary solution until we can get it resolved. Zierel are still the enemy no matter what though.
(Airi stops explaining.)
“Honestly that is a lot to take in,” I say while scratching my head.
“I’m in agreement there,” Amelia agrees.
“It is still important to know regardless,” Airi responds with a serious expression still on her face.
“At least it gives me a bit of a better understanding about the Zierel. They really aren’t great in the slightest, even before they arrived here,” I say calmly.
It just gives me a lot to think about when it comes down to the infection within my arm. Not that my mind has really changed when it comes to wiping them out completely… They all deserve to die either way.
The woman isn’t really adding onto any of this either which doesn’t help; she is just keeping quiet about the war as if it doesn’t mean a thing.
I’d expect her to give some sort of comment on the whole thing.
“You want me to defend my kind? I already know how it sounds and there’s no reason to protect them,” She speaks up with irritation in her voice.
I’m just surprised, that’s all. You really don’t like them either… I guess it makes sense why you encourage me killing them as much as you do.
“I don’t like the idea of dying but I don’t think they should live either. We’ve made a lot of mistakes that I don’t think are possible to forgive,” She responds with some of the irritation disappearing.
Humans make mistakes too. A lot more than we care to admit but I don’t think it means we should be erased from existence.
Shit.
That makes it sound like I’m taking the side of the zierel but I’m not. They are killing without any remorse whatsoever… That isn’t the same as us.
“Light bearers aren’t so pure either,” She says before disappearing.
Honestly that is possible with anything since Airi did mention something about people on the inside betraying them. Her knowledge on it seems to be very little though.
They probably keep people out of the loop on purpose so that they can keep doing what they need to.
“On a different note, why do you keep your face covered Amelia?” Airi asks with a curious look in her eyes.
I look towards Amelia as well.
“Scars across my face that I prefer not to show people. It isn’t really a pleasant sight,” Amelia answers with a bit of sadness.
I can only imagine what kind of scars she has across her face, but I don’t blame her for keeping it hidden. None of my scars are visible all the time either.
My arm is the only one that is a bit hard to hide at times since the infection is a wild card occasionally.
