Chapter 3: The Way It Falls Apart
Two weeks have passed since the sun disappeared, strange noises have been heard outside most days. Everything has been starting to run low…
Food, water, and most sources of power have died off.
“Liam we are going to have to figure out a way to get some more food and water.” Dad says with a serious tone.
“How? We’ve heard how it sounds out there.” I respond with a bit of fear in my voice.
Whatever monsters lurk in the dark…. They are killing whoever walks the streets and I don’t think I want to be one of the people to die out there.
Dad stands up from the table.
“I don’t think we have much of a choice. Searching for something is the only way we’ll be able to keep going,” Dad says while patting my head.
“We can’t just leave Mom and Mya here either. I don’t think it’ll be good for them to be left alone,” I reply while looking towards the two of them.
I can tell that my dad knows that I’m not feeling brave enough to head out onto the streets with him. But I also think he knows deep down that it would be stupid to leave them behind.
“Watch after them for me then. I’ll head out and find some supplies for all of us,” Dad says with a confident smile across his face.
It feels hard to say anything after that, almost like I’m suffocating. “Y-Yeah. I’ll watch over them.” I respond after a bit of hesitation.
“Good. I’m proud of you Liam, I hope you always know that. I’ll be back later,” Dad says before walking over to Mom and Mya.
I watch as he says goodbye to the two of them as well, witnessing the tears go down both of their faces. It wasn’t really surprising since he is doing a lot of the work around here.
Dad has been keeping this place going… Even if it hasn’t been the same since everything started to shut down.
Click.
The sound of the door unlocking immediately takes my attention as I watch him walk out the front door. I don’t waste any time and rush over to secure the door after he exits the house.
I secure the latch back into place and make my way back over to the window. Just barely I can see him walking outside with a small flashlight as he starts to make his way.
I’m not sure what’s out there but I’ve been hearing more of them around here lately so I don’t know what he’ll do. There hasn’t been any sign of the government showing up to save us either.
Honestly it is probably just a matter of time before we die… The damn sun is gone. Something that we need has disappeared from the world without any explanation.
Now monsters are arriving, people are dying, and I don’t think there’s any way out of this.
Scratchhhhh!!
The sound of something clawing at the wall suddenly gets louder and louder.
“Liam what’s that noise?!” Mom speaks loud enough for me to hear her.
“I don’t know. Take Mya upstairs and secure the bedroom.” I instruct while trying to keep calm.
“I’m not going to leave you down here.” Mom says with concern in her voice.
“Dad isn’t here right now so it is my job to protect you both. Please just go upstairs while I make sure everything is okay.” I plea while picking up a small metal rod.
She didn’t say anything else as she finally takes my sister upstairs to hide out in their bedroom.
It is my job to keep them safe until Dad returns so I can’t take any risks in the meantime.
I grip the metal rod tightly as I begin to look around at the different windows.
It’s possible that it is just something brushing past the house but I don’t want to take any chances. These things are definitely not something to mess around with.
Scrapeeeeee!
Like nails on a chalkboard, something begins to drag across the window with a deafening screech.
I can just barely see it but some sort of black arm is going across the window with razor sharp claws, that is the most I could make out.
Everything else is pretty hard to see.
SHATTER!!!
The windows suddenly break as something jumps through them. Thud!!!
Ba-thump. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
I could feel my heart beginning to race as I slowly step back, eventually hitting the edge of a doorframe. Whatever it is… It it slowly moving towards me.
I need to do something here… But what could I possibly do against something like this… Will a metal rod even do anything?
Scrapppppp!
I could see it’s claws digging through the walls with ease as it gets closer and closer. This isn’t the time for hesitation…
I swing the rod towards it with as much force as I can. CRACK!!! I can hear the sound of something cracking from the impact as it back steps a few meters.
“SCREEEECH!!!!!!” A blaring screech comes out from it as it looks towards me once more.
It has a disfigured body with two long arms that extend out past its waist, the two hands were definitely looking razor sharp, and I could just barely see its head tilted to the left as if it’s neck was broken.
Holy shit… Holy shit…. I hit that thing and it’s still coming. I’ll need to keep hitting it until it doesn’t move anymore. Yeah. That will work perfectly fine!
I force myself to lift the rod once more and charge towards it while beginning to swing the rod at it once again. As it looks like it’s about to hit… The monster appears to duck slightly under the rod.
SLICE!!!
Pain jolts throughout my arm almost instantly as I realize that the claw tore right through it.
“AARGH—!” A gut wrenching pain erupts from me as I stumble backwards.
Drip.
Blood hits the floor as I fall back against the wall. It felt almost impossible to move my arm at this point. The pain is probably one of the worst feelings I ever felt in my life.
