Chapter 31: Memories From Another Life (1)
Nothing here adds up, but I think this could also be a side effect from the awakening. This all is happening from the light that I touched earlier.
I’ll just have to see where this leads me.
I feel someone tap my shoulder so I turn around to see who it is. To my surprise I find myself standing before a girl that looks just like Airi.
“Everything okay Aether?” She asks with a look of concern on her face.
So I definitely don’t look like myself is the logical conclusion in this whole situation.
“Yep, just enjoying the sun,” I answer without hesitation.
“Good. Everyone else is gathering for the meeting, you coming?” She asks with a smile.
“Of course,” I answer.
“Great! Let’s get going then,” she shouts before running past.
I didn’t have much of a choice so I follow behind her while taking in the scenery around us.
The feeling in my body is a lot different than before, almost like something is flowing throughout my body. It doesn’t feel like the infection in the slightest.
But after a few minutes of running we reach a giant square where a bunch of different people are standing around. These ones are all wearing robes like Airi.
Each of them are white with a symbol representing light on each of them.
“Azriel is going to be starting off the meeting,” Airi whispers.
It’s abundantly clear that I’m with Airi in some sort of strange dream. I don’t really understand any of it but that’s the most logical conclusion for now.
But this isn’t something that I’d ever dream about. It might be some sort of memory.
“Bingo! I’m glad you came to that on your own. It is weird to watch this from the sidelines,” a masculine voice speaks up with excitement.
Another voice that I’ve never heard before… I really hope you won’t be stuck in my head too.
“No no no. I believe this is happening from the light you touched while dying in the void,” He responds casually.
So the lantern brought me here for some mysterious reason… One that I don’t really know just yet.
I’m seeing all of this through you but at the same time I am you? This is really quite the strange situation to be in all of a sudden.
Surrounded by a bunch of light bearers in this mysterious place where everything seems to be perfectly okay. I’m guessing this must be the world Airi comes from.
“World? It is the realm that looks over yours. But this is before everything went wrong, at least that’s what my guess is,” He says with a little bit of confidence.
A man with multiple symbols of light on his chest walks onto the stage in the center, his robes are a bit longer than the others. He also seems to have long red hair that extends past his shoulders and towards the center of his back.
His eyes are bright red with the same crosses in them as Airi.
“I believe everyone knows that the sun is one of the strongest things we possess. It keeps the humans from suffering the curse that darkness brings. The beings that we have been keeping at bay,” He speaks loudly with a serious expression on his face.
Speeches really aren’t my thing man… Do I have to listen to this whole thing?
“Short version is that we need to keep the sun from disappearing no matter what. This is before someone messed up,” He says with a serious tone.
Before I can respond to what he says, Airi begins to tug on my arm.
“Can you believe it? You are being tasked as the main keeper of the sun,” Airi says with excitement.
I look around to see everyones eyes on me… Looks of jealousy all around the square.
“I can’t say it’s surprising. I’m a good pick for it,” I reply without thinking.
I didn’t even say that, what? That just came out when I went to speak… But maybe that’s how it works. Memories of someone else is definitely quite strange.
“Aether you should head to your post, good luck!” Azriel shouts with a serious look in his eyes.
That guy is definitely quite the leader.
I wave goodbye to Airi and begin to make my way to the post that I am assigned to. It is a nice walk through a small forest, eventually it leads to a tower.
As I enter the tower I can see that it doesn’t go up in the slightest but it actually goes down instead.
“This tower really does bring back a lot of memories. Ironic huh? I think I understand what’s happening to you kid,” Aether speaks with confidence.
“What’s happening?” I question with confusion in my voice.
“You are awakening part of my power,” He answers.
The response hits me like a truck and I stumble back for a moment as I consider what he said.
It doesn’t take me long but I manage to recover and begin to head back towards the steps, but I couldn’t help but notice a mirror to the left of them.
I walk over to it to see short wavy red hair with some bangs that hang over my face, red eyes with the same crosses in them, a cut like scar down across my right eye, and the same robes as the others.
Aether’s body is also quite built, unlike mine. He definitely is a lot stronger than I am in the real world.
“Badass, I know. I’ll accept the compliment. Light bearers all have a unique power though, that’s the important thing to know here,” Aether interrupts.
“What exactly is your power?” I ask with a curious tone.
“Head to the bottom of the tower and you’ll find the answer to your question,” He answers quickly before disappearing.
“Hello? Hello? Where’d you go?” I question a few times before looking towards the steps.
Guess he won’t be giving me the answer so easily. Heading down into the tower is the only way for me to figure anything out, thanks Aether.
Hopefully it is something good.
