Chapter 30: Rip Your Heart Out
The room is beginning to get darker all around me as I continue to dig into my chest with the dagger. I can also feel the pain starting to overwhelm me.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
I take a look down at my chest to see how far I’ve come along… It is definitely a lot harder than it sounds.
Time isn’t exactly on my side here with all the blood I’m losing so I need to hurry up and finish this already. Otherwise I’m going to die before I can even have a chance to awaken in the first place.
I lift my right hand up and move it into my chest. It takes a bit of force at first but then I finally manage to get it into there.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
My heartbeat is getting louder with each second as my hand finally begins to grasp something. A tight sensation begins to engulf my chest as I begin to tighten my grip, even sharper pain begins to follow.
I feel my body wanting to fall over but force myself to stay upright on the bed.
Grip.
Pull.
Using what little strength I have, I continue to pull more and more until I feel everything getting worse and worse.
BA-DUM. BA-DUM. BA-DUM.
Tear. Tear.
My vision starts to get darker as I start to see my hand coming out from my chest. Blood is pouring out even more, covering the floor in a puddle of my blood.
Airi is probably on the way to my room because I couldn’t hold back the shouts of pain any longer. Time is no longer on my side in multiple different ways.
Rip!!!
Finally I can just barely see my right hand out from my chest… holding my heart as it beats the last few times.
Thud!!
I fall onto the floor, into my own blood. Everything around me is beginning to disappear with each second that passes by.
If this doesn’t awaken me… I’ll probably be dead here. Nobody would’ve expected this to be the way I die either. What person would willingly rip out their own damn heart?
The world is corrupted by complete darkness so anything is possible. I don’t regret it though.
Crash!!
The door slams open as I can just barely hear Airi’s voice.
“No. No. No,” She cries as her footsteps get closer.
That’s the last thing I hear her say as I drift off into the darkness that awaits me.
It feels like I’m floating but when I open my eyes I can’t say anything else around me, just darkness. Trying to move is pointless as well since I don’t have the slightest clue about where I am.
All the pain I felt from my chest is completely gone so at least I know that I’m not in the same place anymore.
This must be what happens when you die… You end up in some endless void.
I don’t really know what I expected with everything since it was never a guarantee that it would work. I decided to trust the words of an infection.
Not it was entirely her fault either… She didn’t even expect me to actually do it.
Did I really learn anything from this?
“You really did rip your heart out,” Her voice echoes.
The ability to speak doesn’t seem to be possible as I float here.
“I didn’t know if it would truly work but I guess this is the time to see,” She speaks once more, her voice getting more distant.
It doesn’t really make sense to me how she’s even talking when I died. This entire place seems like a spot for the dead.
There’s no way I’m still alive… Right?
I turn my head to look around a few different directions until I finally notice a distant light to the left. It appears to be in the shape of a lantern as well.
Lanterns really are a nice sight to have. That might be the way for me to awaken… I have to make my way towards that light somehow.
Can I even do that from this position?
Just barely I begin to notice that I can move my body. It definitely takes me a few moments but I can swim towards this light.
So that’s exactly what I start to do; swimming towards the light to the best of my abilities.
It begins to get closer and closer.
As I reach the light I extend my right hand towards it and a sharp pain begins to surge throughout my body. Similar to when I tried this with the infection.
Except this time I don’t stop, my hand continues to reach for it.
I didn’t do all of that for nothing. Ripping my heart out is a lot more painful than touching some stupid light!!!
Finally I feel my hand grip onto the lantern as the darkness around me begins to disappear within moments.
White light starts to blind me so I close my eyes to let everything run its course.
A giant gust of wind blows past me as I feel everything around me disappear. It didn’t feel like I was floating anymore.
Upon opening my eyes I can see a completely different landscape than I remember. A town in the distance with people walking around in strange clothing.
The sun is in the sky, lighting everything up around me.
I don’t really understand what is happening right now… This is definitely not the same world that I know. This must be some sort of weird dream from the awakening that I didn’t expect.
There isn’t any pain in my body anymore either.
With that I decide to look down at my chest and my arm to see if anything is different.
My arm is completely normal and I’m also wearing weird clothing like the people ahead of me. It is almost like something out of one of those fantasy novels I read.
“What is happening?” I ask softly, noticing a change in my voice.
