Chapter 10: Me, Myself, and I
***Third POV***
Fuck, I just had to run my mouth!”
The tremors got even more intense, and debris began falling from the ceiling.
So now Damon had to do more than just keep on his feet. He had to avoid the falling debris, while also making sure no stray fell on the egg. He knew it was more durable than a regular egg, but he wasn’t taking any chances.
It was unfortunate, but as a reflection he couldn’t put stuffs in his storage ring. The storage ring on Damon’s main body didn’t work for a reflection, not unless the reflection acquired another storage ring after being made.
So he was forced to hold onto the egg like a peasant.
As the tremors continued to climb, Damon took off back in the direction he had came from, into the long corridor that led to the room, all while trying to avoid falling on his face.
’Shit, I almost forgot about this!’ he inwardly facepalmed.
The wall had closed behind him after he had entered this place. But this was only an obstacle for the common folk.
With a mental tug, the cerulean blue egg seemingly disappeared from Damon’s hands, before he shattered into motes of light with a soft crack.
___________
Three seconds earlier, back in the throne room. With his reflection stuck behind the wall and the entire castle shaking, Damon hurriedly created another reflection.
If it was only his reflection, Damon would have bolted out of the castle, but something told him he shouldn’t leave that egg behind.
With a mental tug, the new reflection shifted slightly, before an egg appeared in his hands.
The reflection had swapped with his counterpart behind the wall.
“Whew! I thought I was gonna die in there for a second.” Damon’s reflection heaved a sigh of relief.
Damon rolled his eyes.
“You’re a reflection, you can’t die.”
“Exactly!” his reflection exclaimed.
“You’re crazy!” Damon sighed.
“But I’m your reflection, so that means you’re the one who’s actually crazy.” the reflection retorted.
“Sigh, what am I even doing talking to myself? I think I might be going senile, but then again I willingly entered a creepy castle I chanced upon, in a deadland to boot, so maybe I’m not entirely sane to begin with…..” Damon continued rambling, even as the castle continued shaking.
“Ghrʉuuuuuu—nnn’KHAAR-thuuul—raaahh’GHNN!”
A deep and resonant howl suddenly echoed from deep underneath the castle. The howl was strong enough to shake even the foundations.
Both Damon and his reflection froze, then turned to look at each other eyes widened.
It took a few seconds before Damon finally snapped out of it. “Give me that!” he snatched the egg from his reflection, before the both of them bolted towards the castle doors that had slammed behind them a few hours earlier.
Whatever that thing was, Damon knew it was waaaaay out of his league, more so than even the tentacle monster that attacked them earlier.
The first thing that came to damon’s mind was that whatever was down there was probably some ancient horror, and damon taking the egg might have supposedly woken up the horror from it’s slumber.
’I got to stop using fantasy novels at a reference.’ Damon shook his head.
“But you’re in a fantasy world though.” his reflection spoke while sidestepping a stone the size of a basketball.
A smile tugged at Damon’s lips “You’re kinda right.”
Soon they reached they reached the castle doors.
“So how the hell do we open this doors cause I’m pretty sure we pushed it open, and I don’t see a handle or anything.” Damon mumbled.
“How the hell I’m I supposed to know if you don’t. Were the same person remember?” His reflection said with a ’duh!’ expression.
“It was a rhetorical question you idiot.” Damon retorted. He wanted to continue lashing, but then something clicked in his head.
“Hold up.”
“Hold up.”
Both Damon and his reflection spoke simultaneously.
“Why am I even thinking of opening the doors when I could teleport away?” Damon muttered baffled at his own idiocy.
“That’s right you’re an idiot.” his reflection spoke.
“Alright punk you’re starting to annoy me!” Damon glared at his reflection. ’If I keep talking to myself, I’ll really go insane.’
“Yes you will” his reflection quipped.
Damon sighed, before his lips curled into a cold smile. “You know what, I’m out of here, so toodles.” he clutched the egg in one hand, and gave a salute with the other, before his posture suddenly changed.
“You too huh?” The first reflection said to the second one that just appeared.
“Ghrʉuuuuuu—nnn’KHAAR-thuuul—raaahh’GHNN!”
The same deep howl echoed once again, and this time, even harder.
The two reflections glanced at each other.
“CURSE YOU DAMON!!!!” they both shouted before shattering into notes of light with two soft cracks.
*********
Damon found himself at another location.
“Cursing me? hmph! I’m your maker, you should be glad I have you life!” he harrumphed.
“Now to see what you’re actually about.” Damon muttered raising the cerulean egg to his eye level.
Damon didn’t put the egg in his storage space because…. well he couldn’t. Why else would he keep clutching on to it after getting it to his main body.
The egg simply refused to get into his storage ring, which gave left him with one answer.
The egg was alive. the only thing a storage space couldn’t contain was life. Don’t get it wrong, a storage space could contain a bunch of chicken eggs, but that was because the eggs aren’t truly alive.
Let me rephrase that, anything that has reached a certain level of life, cannot be contained in a storage space.
A chicken egg with a yolk and albumen would enter a storage space, but what about one that has started to form a chick?
That one simply wouldn’t enter.
As Damon observed the egg further, the egg suddenly started glowing, before the glow rose to the pointed end, and formed a ring.
Damon stared slack jawed .
“A halo?! he exclaimed. “Don’t tell me this is a familiar.”
But then he suddenly frowned.
“But aren’t those suppose to be in their familiar dimension?” he muttered unsure.
Aetherials could use a summoning ritual to summon a familiar from the familiar dimension to form a contract with.
Though there were huge chances of summoning some eldritch horrors if one wasn’t careful, so familiars were quite rare, at least for common people.
“Welp, I’ll see how it turns out.” he muttered as the halo faded away. Even though still skeptical, if it really was a familiar, Damon wouldn’t hesitate to form a contract with it. After all the protagonist a few of the main cast had one, so why couldn’t he.
“Hell, even my sister has one, now that I think about it, she’s one of the female leads.” Damon felt like belching.
He’d think about it later, it was getting dark–at least according to damon’s watch. He couldn’t determine shit. The environment was still the same as when they had left the ancient hall.
Dark, gloomy, and fogy as hell. But fortunately, or surprisingly, Damon’s reflection had managed to find a safe haven for the moment.
It wasn’t anything like the similar grand structures everywhere, but a small house made of stone. It even had a bedroom, but unfortunately no bed. The bed had likely decayed over the course of time.
But it was better than nothing, or sleeping out in the wild.
Damon brought out a sleeping bag from his storage ring. Now more than ever he regretted not taking his tent when he left the ancient hall.
Without much fanfare, Damon slipped into the sleeping bag, but not before making a reflection to stand guard.
“”Damn I feel like hell!” he muttered closing his eyes. He still had one reflection stationed about two hundred meters away from the castle, so he dispelled it, before dozing off. The day had been quite hectic.
Damon’s night went smoothly, or not quite since he was still wide awake and deep asleep all day the same time. Not to mention the jolting at the occasional howls of undead fiends echoing through the night, hoping they won’t come anywhere near him.
Yeaaah, he had a pretty bad night. But you know what’s better than a bad night, a heartful morning breakfast.
“Hey, I want some too?” his reflection growled as Damon stuffed himself with smoked kebab.
Damon glared at his reflection.
“You’re a reflection, you don’t need food to exist.”
The reflection rolled his eyes.
“Doesn’t mean I can’t taste.”
“Fine have this you mongrel.” Damon finally relented albeit with indignantly.
After they were done eating, or more like after Damon was done eating, he turned to his reflection.
“No!” the reflection said flatly.
Damon’s face fell.
“You haven’t even heard what I have to say.”
“I’m you, I know what you want to say, baaaka” the reflection dragged.
“Fair enough.” Damon muttered. “Go check out the perimeter or you’re not having another taste of my food.”
“Hah!” The reflection gasped. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Of course I dare.” Damon smiled. “Now scurry along peasant.”
“You’ll pay for this!” The reflection growled moving out.
“That I won’t Damon, that I won’t.” Damon muttered smirking before his smirk suddenly ceased.
“It seems I’m going crazy at a faster rate.” He sighed.
