Chapter 49: Did you know about it?
Spira city was a small city located at the northern reach of the Kamar continent, so it was pretty isolated. Basically at one edge of the human domain.
One would think such a city would be protected by a garrison of powerful individuals, but such was not the case.
Instead, the strongest aetherial residing in the city was the city lord who was only an Eta ranked aetherial. And with the way he was, the me who had just transmigrated would absolutely mess him up.
It wasn’t that the city produced no talented individuals, no, far from it actually. The city was just like a country side back on earth. Talented individuals would migrate to other other big cities to look for greener pastures, or a better life.
Especially youths who would want to go to the institutes to learn better about their powers and whatnot. It was a cycle that would never end. Jayden and her ring of heretics were based here due to that very fact. The city couldn’t defend against them.
Now in the city lord’s case, he was simply overpowered, and probably promised power. And although he wasn’t a heretic yet, that wouldn’t have been the case for long if we hadn’t arrived.
Even if I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said he had no other choice, what stopped him from contacting the other big cities? Or sending a discrete message to the empire?
Andthat was the reason why I decided, even though I guessed he was probably threatened into cooperation by the heretics, he still had to die.
Was it cruel to him? Maybe. But it was even crueler to the children kidnapped. And the parents who lost their children. I’d say if I was in his place, I probably would have done the same to keep my life, but that wasn’t even possible. I don’t see anything that could turn me into someone like him.
Sure I was a coward, but there was a limit, even to cowardice. Maybe I was just bragging, and in his place I would do the same, but all those were what ifs.
Anyway, a moment earlier, Anastasia and my reflection had just reached us, when the voice of the city lord sounded.
“From today onwards, all of you will be celebrated as the heroes of this city.” The city lord announced.
Just as I was thinking about the most effective way to silently kill him without it being traced back to me, Anastasia opened her mouth.
“Oh cut the bullshit.”
Everyone turned to us. My reflection tactily took a few steps away from her.
’What’s going on in her head?’ I thought. Did she know about the involvement of the city lord? Surely not, even I only suspected him because I had a much broader scope from reading the novel.
“Miss Necron!
“Sia!”
Alistair and Delilah exclaimed simultaneously. “I’m glad you’re safe.” Delilah said walking towards Anastasia while glaring at my reflection standing a few feet away from the redhead. “Stay away from that… guy. He’s not a good man.” Delilah not so subtly said as she grabbed Anastasia’s hands.
I rolled my eyes, dismissing my reflection. This was getting old. What could I possibly do to someone who could fold me without even trying. Though I also didn’t hide my glare. I openly glared back at her.
The atmosphere grew a little awkward until Alistair coughed.
“Ahem! Ms Necron, you said something about cutting the bullshit. Might I know what you meant by that?”
“Ah, pardon me.” The city lord nervously interjected before Anastasia could speak. “I didn’t know there were more of you.” He said with an uneasy smile.
’God, she knows.’ I deadpanned, seeing the look she threw the obese man. “Nothing much.” she said. “Other than this man is working with the heretics.” She gestured at the city lord.
Silence.
There was nothing more deafening than the silence in the area after Anastasia dropped the bomb.
“W…w…what nonsense are you saying?!” The city lord exclaimed as every eyes turned to him. “I might not be a great leader, but I’d never commit such an atrocity.”
_”Yeah, there no way his Lordship would do that!” One of the city lord’s guards raised his voice.
_”This is blatant framing, you’re trying to sow discord!” Another said.
_”We might be grateful for your help, but that doesn’t mean we’ll endure this!” added another.
“Tsk, mobs.” I shook my head. If there was any character worse than an extra, that would be a mobs. Mobs could change sides faster than you could say mob.
“This is getting a little intense, Sia.” Delilah said worriedly. “What made you say so?”
“Would you shut the fuck up?! You’re blowing off my ears.” It wasn’t until Fabian snapped that the frantic mob kept quiet.
“I’m wrong is what you’re saying?” Anastasia meanwhile tilted her head. “What do you have to say about this then?” a small flat black case appeared in her hand.
’A graphic mirror?’ I thought. A graphic mirror was basically an over glorified name for a magic camera. It could capture and store both images, and videos. It also functioned like a phone, basically you could facetime someone, albeit it functioned through magic, not tech.
I used to have one before, but after I was kicked out, I never bothered to buy another. Now that I think about it, I should get one for myself.
Anastasia flipped open the case, and with a few taps here and there, she turned the case towards everyone.
Two people were clearly visible on it.
Dion turned to me.
“Is it just me, or does this scene seem familiar?” he whispered.
“Of course it seems familiar.” Why the hell wouldn’t it?, after all, it was showing both the city lord, and the blond man, the exact same scene Dion and I had witnessed yesterday.
“The boss wants you to know, some pretty suspicious people have been spotted coming into this city today, and she wants you to find them out.” the blond man said.
“O…o…of course.” the city lord replied hastily. “I’ll do my best to find them.”
Everyone stared as the scene continued, to the point where the blond man called me out, our conversation, how I ’insulted’ his so called Lord Jin, and how he attacked me, to how I broke down into sparks.
By the time the clip ended, the gazes of everyone were divided into two. Some were on the increasingly pale city lord, and the rest on me.
The ones who had their gazes on me, were our classmates. I especially took notice of Anastasia’s teasing gaze.
’So this bitch was there all along huh?’ I mused. I had to give it to her, she really knew how to play. Now everyone would think I knew this and didn’t tell them.
“You knew about this?” Fabian grumbled.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Delilah squinted her eyes, sending me a righteous glare. The nerve of her, after all this time of saying she didn’t trust me.
I opened my mouth, but before I could say anything,
“It’s a fake!” The city lord exclaimed. “They are doing all this to frame me!” He cried at his people. “Hmph, as if.” I scoffed. Who would go to such great lengths to frame someone as unimportant as him?
Even with the city lord’s protest, it was as clear as day that he was lying. The guards accompanying him slowly lost the reverent look they had for him.
“Believe me, they….”
Thuack!
Before anyone could realize, a precise hand chop from Fabian knocked the hysterical man unconscious.
“Shut the fuck up.” he muttered as the man collapsed on his carriage.
Ignoring the unconscious man, Alistair turned to me.
“So you did know about it.” His eyes narrowed looking at me.
I turned to him.
“You are right.” I heaved a weary sigh. “But let me also clarify something.” I glanced at Anastasia who was still giving me a subtle sly smirk.
“Miss Necron and I were in on it together. I made them aware of my presence just so we could have a conclusive evidence on record.” I shamelessly lied.
“It was also part of our plan that both of us would disagree during the plan to siege the heretics’ base.” I continued.
“Otherwise, why else would miss Necron raise an issue with me during the plan to save innocent children, all while knowing it could jeopardize their lives?”
“Isn’t that right, Miss Necron?” I turned to the redhead with a not so subtle provocative smirk.
Now she had no choice but to admit what I said was the truth. If she denied it, it would show that she disagreed with me over her own pride, and it would also show that she didn’t care about the children.
“Yes, he’s right.” she nodded in agreement, her earlier smile strained slightly. “It was both of our plan.”
’That’s right bitch, you’re a hundred years to young to win against me.’ I thought in glee.
