Chapter 11: Number one
***Third POV***
After the little argument with himself, Damon stepped out of the ’safe haven’ to scout out the perimeter.
He walked around stealthily, keeping with the shadows, which for some reason were really dark. It didn’t make any sense, for shadows to be pitch black, but then again ever since he found out he was in a fantasy novel, he had lowered his standards of reality.
He continued his crusade for the next few hours, while pondering about the ways of life, which completely defeated the purpose of him coming out in the first place, because he sure as hell couldn’t go back to where his main body was.
Hell be damned if he could remember the way.
_Swish!
Just as he was lost in thoughts, the sound of air being sliced apart jolted him back to his senses. He instinctively tilted his head, but underestimated the speed of the projectile.
_Shiiiing!
The projectile tore a small cut on his cheek, before hitting the ground.
Damon instinctively jumped back in full alertness, ’The hell was that?’ he raised his hand to his cheek, but rather than the blood he expected, the cut was frozen stiff.
It was then that an amused chuckle cut through the air.
“Fufufu, little brother, who would have thought you were still alive?”
Damon shuddered, ’That accursed voice!’ he thought raising his head to look above him, and there she was, sitting leisurely like she owned the place, smiling down at him smugly.
Oh how he wanted to punch that smile off her face.
But he shook away the thought. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he didn’t want to expose his self as a reflection, and it’s certainly not because he was afraid of her. Nay, how could the great him.
But even though, he didn’t want to get on her bad side, so he smiled.
“It’s nice to see you too Ms present. But I must say, what a unique way of greeting an acquaintance.” he touched the cut on his cheek.
’Thankfully, it wasn’t a fatal shot.’ he thought. If it had been, he would have shattered into motes of light, and he didn’t want anyone seeing that anytime soon.
“Oh sorry about that.” she waved her hand unapologetically and jumped to the ground. “Mira made me an ice dagger, so I decided to get a feel of it. Imagine my shock when you just so happen to appear in it’s trajectory.”
Damon’s mouth twitched.
“Even a kid can tell you don’t sound sorry!” he deadpanned.
She shrugged.
“Oh I didn’t mean to sound so, you just assumed I did.”
“Anyway, you can come with me if you’re still onboard with our deal. After all you did quite a good job on your part. Once we get out of here, it’ll be my turn. But if you want to part ways…, ms present paused, then I’ll respect your wishes.” Her expression turned solemn.
“Of course I’m still in!” Damon grumbled.
“Why the hell would I give it up? After almost dying because of the same fucking deal, I should at least be compensated, no? he glanced at her.” He could still feel a phantom of that tentacle wrapped around his torso.
“Good choice.” Ms present smiled. “I knew you would choose wisely.”
“Of course why wouldn’t I?” Damon slightly puffed his chest. But inwardly, he was anything but that.
’Foolish girl.’ he thought. Damon knew she was trying to goad him to team up once again. Hell if he didn’t realize that, he would have lived his entire 28 years in vain, or was it 46 now?
Anyway, he played along only because of one reason. He had realized that he was starting to get insane being alone, even if by a little. Proof was him talking/arguing with himself.
Also, Damon knew he still hadn’t gotten over his transmigration, and no matter what he told himself, it was still a wound on his psyche, one that would likely not heal anytime soon, or ever. So if having actual people around him in this stranger lands might help mitigate the effects, he’d take his chances.
“Okay, let’s go, Mira’s waiting inside.” Ms present said leaping back onto the rooftop.
Damon followed her onto the rooftop, then she lead them through a hole at the topmost part of the roof, into a room.
“How the hell did you two even find this place?” Damon muttered softly as he took in the room. While it wasn’t nearly as grand as the throne room he had ransacked, it still looked like heaven in this hell.
It was fully furnished and even had a massive bed which Mira was currently occupying.
“Just so you know, there’s one of those undead right below this floor, so whatever you do, do not yell.” Ms present cautioned.
Damon gulped.
“Then why the hell are you guys still hanging out here?!” he scream whispered.
“Fufufu.” Ms present covered her mouth. “You really amuse me little brother. I said not to yell, I didn’t say to whisper.”
Before damon could retort, Mira spoke before him.
“My lady, I’m afraid it’s improper for you to stay in the same room with a man, much less a someone as unscrupulous as him.” Mira said glaring daggers at Damon.
Damon’s mouth twitched.
’I’m a bloody prince I’ll have you know. If anything you’re the ones who are not worthy to stay in the same room as this prince.’ he inwardly huffed completely forgetting the fact that he was no longer a prince.
“Worry not Mira.” Ms present said before turning to Damon. “You wouldn’t try anything improper would you? she inquired in a sing song tone.
“I have no time to waste on such nonsense.” Damon grumbled.
After that, Damon settled down. He also learned what happened after that horror, and how Ms present and Mira ended up here.
Apparently, as the two ran away after captain Baldor died and Ivan got dragged away, they ran for over half an hour before they managed to escape the horror’s suffocating aura.
Though they weren’t all that lucky. Not long after, they encountered another one of the undead. But because Ms present was relatively alright, they managed to deal with it, albeit with great difficulty.
It was during the battle, that Ms present managed to spot the opening that led to this place. After checking and finding nothing wrong, they decided to set camp here. But then when they tried to check downstairs, they noticed another undead patrolling the floor.
Thankfully it hadn’t noticed them, so they hurried back upstairs.
“Then Mira inscribed a few cloaking spells on the walls of the stairs that leads to this room.” Ms present finished the story.
“So what about you, how did escape?” Ms present inquired leaning against the bed.
“Uhhhhh, I ran?” Damon offered.
“I see.” Ms present muttered. If she didn’t believe him, she didn’t show it on her face.
“He’s obviously lying my lady.” Mira suddenly spoke. “Allow me to tear the truth from his mouth my lady.” An ice scythe materialized in her hand.
Damon frowned.
“I’m not afraid of you bitch. Who the hell do you think you are?” Damon spat. Honestly who did the bitch think she was? She was an other, not even fit to be an extra in this world, not to mention side character.
“Calm down now you two.” Ms present turned to the already seething Mira. “Everyone has their secrets Mira.”
“But my lady…”
“Enough Mira” Ms present cut her off, before turning to Damon, “I’m sorry for her behavior.”
“Hmph!” Damon huffed and walked to the far edge of the room.
’Calm down Damon, you’re better than them.’ Damon chanted to himself like a mantra.
The room was silent for the next few hours, which was pretty boring to Damon. And unlike the two, who were sitting crosslegged on the bed, he couldn’t even chase away the boredom by channeling his aether, even though his main body was doing it right now.
After a while he decided to come here with his main body. After all sooner or later he would have to take something from his storage ring. It would be too suspicious otherwise. Since he had made up his mind, he stood up.
But just as he he made way for the hole through which they had came into the room,
“Where are you going?” Ms present’s voice cut through the silence in the room.
“I’m going to do a number one. What? You want to watch me go?” Damon squinted his eyes.
Ms present went silent.
“Thought so.” he muttered as he leapt out the hole.
“What’s a number one?” Ms present pondered after Damon leapt out of the room.
But she soon shook her head.
“Maybe a dialect used by Vordeians.” she muttered.
Meanwhile, with Damon, after he leapt out, he carefully moved to the other side of the roof. Then with a mental tug, his posture shifted slightly, and a certain egg appeared in his hand.
But this time he didn’t dispel the reflection that had taken the place of the main body. He left it just in case, who knows when it’ll come in handy.
So with the egg in hand, he jumped back into the hole,
“What’s a number one?” a voice startled him.
