Chapter 149: Queries
Around five hours later, the sprawling city of Darkfell capital spread just across the horizon. A feeling of nostalgia hit me as I saw the familiar landscape.
And there, in the heart of the massive city, stood a grand magnificent black castle. Darkfell Garden, thatwas the castle’s name. It was so big that it was visible even from several tens of kilometers out here.
Soon, we reached the city, however, the moment the airship entered the capital’s airspace, I felt a powerful presence wash over me, it lingered for a moment, before vanishing as if it was never there.
Normally, an airship entering a city like the capital would have been stopped for security purposes, but this was the royal family’s airship, who would dare to stop it.
In no time, we drew closer to the black castle and began a gradual descent. Even from up here I could see the royal guards patrolling the territory like guard dogs.
The airship soon passed over the gigantic obsidian gates that barred the castle ground from the outside., and soon landed in the dockyard.
Haah! I sighed. It was time to step into the mad house.
His… His highness?! Look, is thhat his highness, prince damon?!”
–”No way! T-That’s impossible! Why did he return here after what happened the last time?!”
–”Well, I’ll be damned… So, what should we do? Turn him away from the gates?”
–”Idiot, don’t you see he’s with the duke?! If you’re trying to get yourself killed, keep us out of it.”
-“Oh yes, that’s the Duke’s personal airship.”
Upon our landing, the royal guards noticed me, and started whispering amongst each other, throwing furtive glances at me.
”Tsk.” I clicked my tongue. While I was on my unruly streak, these guards didn’t dare to even look at me. I ignored them and fixed my gaze at the inner reaches of the castle ground. It wasn’t like I couldn’t do anything to deal with them, it was just that dealing with such insects would be beneath me.
That’s right. As an esteemed prince, I must maintain a sense of nobility and decorum.
Wow, did I somehow sound even more narcissistic than I usually did? This whole royalty thing must’ve been getting to my head.
”Let’s go.” However, I had barely focused when the duke simply popped out of existence next to me just like before, but this time bringing Rose with him. Earlier, after we left the Astral Mystic Island, the two had left me to my own devices, and entered in to the cabins, while I stayed on the deck.
”Your highness!!!!”
They all bowed hastily the moment Rose and the Duke appeared. For some reason, they feared Rose even more than they feared me, and such was the case even during my peak. Though it was a no brainer that they feared the Duke even more.
”You may all rise.” the duke smiled.
The guards unanimously rose, though their bodies betrayed their fear as they were visibly trembling.
Before I could blink, the view before my eyes changed, and suddenly the three of us, Rose, the Duke, and myself were standing right before the towering castle.
The castle was a blend of ancient architecture and gothic splendor with a touch of fantasy. It’s imposing structure and dark marble walls gleamed like obsidian.
”My job was to bring you back to the castle, and I’ve done that, you won’t try to escape right?” The duke patted my shoulder with a smile that was not a smile.
What was he thinking? that I would swap away when I was already in the devil’s den? Even I wasn’t that stupid. Besides, whether I liked it or not, this was the place I intended to come to anyway.
”No, I wouldn’t.” I voiced out.
”Alright, try not to antagonize His majesty, if not, should he decide on an even harsher punishment for you this time, like stripping out family name from you, you’d only have yourself to blame.” Before I could even retort, he simply popped out of existence.
I suppressed a scoff from escaping my lips. I didn’t particularly have any problem with it, but the name Darkfell had kind of started to grow on me. So, I’d rather not have it gone, but of course it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest if I lost it… I think.
Anyway, I turned to Rose but realized she wasn’t there. In the moment I took scoffing over my surname, she had already gone ahead of me.
Looking at her retreating figure that has stepped into the castle, I sighed lightly, before I followed after her.
I soon lost sight of Rose, however I wasn’t worried. This was where I practically grew up and lived for the past eighteen years- at least half of me. From my memories, I knew where I was going.
More than memories, it felt like I was driven by instincts. I knew just where to go even though technically I had never been here, but at the same time I had. It was kind of weird honestly.
As I headed to my room, I passed several whispering and gossiping butlers and servants along the way.
Naturally, all of them were confused.
Some even wanted to stop me and ask what I was doing here, but none of them dared to carry on with their foolish thoughts. I guess the fear I had rooted in their minds was still there. Hahaha! I really was a menace back in the day.
After ascending a spiral staircase and walking down a uselessly long, lavish hall, I arrived in front of a particular room.
Taking a deep breath, I twisted the doorknob and swung open the door, entering the room. The room hadn’t changed much from the last time I was here, infact it seemed more glorious than I remembered, or perhaps it was just my wretched half that thought so.
It was a huge room, almost twice as big as my current dormitory in the Astral Mystic Institute.
Opulent and luxuriant were the two words that popped into my head at the first sight of my room. Luxurious items like custom furniture, art pieces, all kinds of high- end state-of-the-art sorcery- tech, regal carpets and rugs, and things like that filled the room.
Damn, I really was living the life. Compared to my modest apartment on earth, this was a fantasy. Not like I wasn’t in a fantasy world.
After taking everything in for a while, I decided to rest a little. After all, today had been full of plot twists.
With an exasperated sigh, I strolled over to the giant emperor sized bed– because it surpassed king sized– in the very middle of the room.
”Fuck finally!!” I cursed the moment I sat on my bed. The constraints on my being had finally disappeared, the blurry and chaotic feed I was receiving from my reflection had cleared up, and even though I didn’t try to swap, I was certain that it would work if I tried.
The time was around 2pm, so I decided to take a little nap. I almost laughed despite myself. When was the last time I took a nap? Hell I didn’t take naps even in my past life.
While lost in thoughts, I didn’t even know when my tired mind let go of my consciousness, and I slipped into the embrace of sweet slumber.
———
After long, comfortable hours of peaceful slumber, I decided it was finally time to wake up.
I rubbed my eyes, waking up from my sleep, but to my astonishment… I wasn’t in my room, and I wasn’t in my bed!
I blinked my hazy eyes and looked around with an incomprehensible gaze. Very soon, a confused frown was strewn across my face.
”Where the hell is this?” Instead of my comfortable, emperor -sized bed, I found myself standing in an open expanse with nothing but a vast nebulous sky above me.
Perplexed, I opened my eyes wide as the vestige of sleep disappeared from my tired mind, and I took in my surroundings.
Nebulous swirls were all around me, bearing weaves like that had a certain flow to them. Stars dotted the nebulous sky in some sort of pattern I could barely comprehend.
I hated to admit it, but I was kind of getting scared now. For a moment, I entertained the thought that I had somewhat died or something.
However, that was just the remnants of my sleep and nascent shock clouding the logical part of my brain.
Moreover, above me was a vast nebulous sky, when it should have been merely evening or sunset by now.
So, the pressing question remained: Where was I?
Just as that thought crossed my mind, a voice rang in my ears, causing me to turn around.
”Welcome, Damon Darkfell.”
