Chapter 24: Ranking Tournament (6)
Her blue hair fluttered as wind blades blew past her, leaving minuscule scars on her cheeks and forehead. Small amounts of her hair were cut off in the strike.
“Wind Blades!”
Nyra’s feet shifted on the rocky terrain as she avoided the strike just barely. Her hands shook. Her outfit was already cut in plenty of places, especially around her thighs and back, but the clothes held on, just barely.
The mountain side would already be cold to a normal person, and the fact that she was getting attacked with a wind affinity would make them feel even colder. To a normal person, it would have been extremely cold, however, to her, it seemed normal due to her affinity to ice.
’Why…did I get so unlucky?’ For Nyra, this terrain was like hell. For the girl in front of her, it was like heaven.
Nyra stood on a ledge, a ginormous drop under her. If she fell from there, she would instantly get eliminated.
Her opponent stood above her on a drop. However, even if the positions were reversed, her opponent could use wind to land appropriately and survive the drop.
“Laurel, stop. We need to team up.””
“No chance, bitch.”
Nyra tried to convince her to avoid being eliminated completely. She took slow steps backwards, however, she already reached the edge.
Her opponent was from a well-known family of wind mages. She was famous for awakening as a mage early on.
Meanwhile, Nyra wasn’t as talented at all, well, in her own eyes at least. She was just a shy introvert who didn’t want trouble.
Despite trying to avoid trouble, she was like a magnet for it, always getting into it nevertheless. What she did.
’I thought we would win.’ Her feet were already hanging off the edge as Laurel kept moving forward toward her.
She remembered the face Klaus made when she promised to save her from the situation. He even swore on his name as an Alderstein, yet they got teleported separately, fucking up the plan completely.
’I need to fight back…’ She grit her teeth, she didn’t want to experience dying, even if it wasn’t a real death, she didn’t want to ruin the plan for the others, she didn’t want to mess up her family’s future.
So she made a last-ditch attempt to survive: “Icicle Spikes.” She pushed her hands outward, mana rushing through her veins urgently as her heartbeat started slowing down rapidly.
Multiple icicles launched out from her palm, launching towards Laurel as they slit through the air between them.
“Wind shield,” a spinning disc of air started rotating around her forearm, which she used to shield her body, deleting the icicles completely out of existence.
She started running towards Nyra, shield on her forearm, as she kept dissecting the icicles.
But to her surprise, Nyra did the same, she started rushing towards her.
“Gale burst!” Laurel pushed herself forward using the gust of wind, appearing in front of Nyra, which was exactly what her plan was.
“Winter Bind,” a thin icy thread came out of her arms, immediately wrapping around Laurel’s ankles, freezing her feet in place for a quick second. Which was just enough for Nyra.
“What the fuck—”
“Frozen Grasp!” Nyra reached out, the mana in her veins pulsed, her heartbeat was slowing down to an extreme as her mana surrounded her palms.
Using this spell, she would cause frostbite to an opponent if she managed to grasp them. Which worked out perfectly in this situation, she wrapped her palms around Laurel’s throat, icicles surrounded her neck instantly, dark frostbite freezing her neck.
Laurel struggled to breathe, her legs shook in place as her eyes became watery, her body temperature dropped as she trembled.
“I’m sorry…” Nyra shook as mana began rising in her veins again.
“Ice shard,” as soon as she used the spell, ice mercilessly rushed out of her fingertips, pushing through Laurel’s throat immediately like a flaming knife would through butter.
Blood splattered onto her face, but Laurel instantly disappeared after that, no scream, nothing came out of her mouth as she vanished.
Nyra stood still, limbs trembling as her opponent’s blood covered her face completely, her blue hair was now soaked in red colours, her baby face covered in minuscule scars and blood.
She fell to the ground and grasped the stone under her body, holding onto it like a lifeguard.
“Oh god,” tears started streaming from her eyes, washing the blood off her face.
Her heartbeat started returning to normal, and even started quickening.
“I just…” It was the first time she had killed someone, even if it wasn’t real, even if it was just a ranking tournament, she still just killed someone.
She collapsed onto the rocks, sobbing historically.
“Please, Klaus, finish the plan…” She curled up into a ball and sobbed on the mountain side, lonely like a loser.
—
Outside, the teachers and students were still shocked by the fight between Matthias and Klaus.
The display now was pinned onto Matthias, who lay in the midst of a field, grass covering his body.
“That was insane…” Even the usually cold Isolde seemed excited as her blood boiled just from watching the fight.
“RIGHT! NOW I WANT TO KICK SOME ASS!” Torren laughed like a maniac, hands raised like she was ready to start a battle with anyone present.
Ravenna, however, who usually was the loudest, just sat still, silently amazed by the performance displayed by the two boys.
’That kid…can use multiple affinity spells…’ Her eyes were bulging out of their sockets as she kept biting her nails.
—
Meanwhile, in the student stands outside, the onlooker students cheated loudly, some embarrassed who bet on Matthias, and some happy.
However, one particular boy just stood still with a grimace on his face.
“Brother seems to have awakened as a mage,” he was looking at Klaus whilst his long blonde hair shook around.
As soon as he spoke up, the couple of students that surrounded him became silent instantly, like someone out of their league just spoke, it was both out of fear and respect.
“What a disgrace,” despite that, he still smiled at his brother, who was walking through a desert, trying to find Matthias.
