Chapter 58: A Witch’s Hat
“Yes, they’ve put me into a room and even punched me once,” A vein throbbed on his forehead as he said that, then he continued without a care in the world.
“I expected more of a warm welcome over a punch to the gut..”
Both the girl and the king looked at Klaus as if he had said something unbelievable.
’Is it that weird to think like that?’ He sighed as he just stood still, looking at the king who seemed shocked to the core.
However, he just let out a ginormous chuckle which echoed through the room.
“Good! Come with me,” he instead walked towards the gate, now from where they had come in.
’Is this the part where I get kidnapped and killed?’ Klaus looked at the princess who just stared in shock and followed after the king, the gate closing behind them, leaving the princess alone.
“I didn’t expect such a young boy to be a messenger for that old man, Marcus,” Kaelvarion said as he led Klaus down a hallway which was extremely dark, almost like they were in catacombs; the only source of light was dim candles lit on the walls.
’Right, me neither,’ that’s what he wanted to say, but he resisted it, “I’m doing it for a special thing…” He coughed once, trying not to go into every little minute detail of their deal with Marcus.
They kept walking down the dark hallway until they arrived in front of a door, which seemed to have countless shining runes hovering over it.
’Oh wow,’ Klaus had seen runes in the academy walls and doors and so on, but never this many at once, like the inside was so important it needed to be protected at all costs.
’Is this the part where he gives me some overpowered reward?’
Instead of saying anything, the king put his palm against the door, and the runes seemed to flow away to the sidewall; however, they didn’t disappear.
He pushed the door open, and dust floated everywhere; it even creaked like it hadn’t been opened in decades.
’Wow,’ inside, dozens of books were lined up; they seemed even more endless than the library Klaus used in the academy.
“Pick something,” the king lifted one finger to make sure Klaus understood it, “only one item, whichever one you prefer.”
Klaus walked past him with a nod and looked around inside. The chandelier was made of gold, and countless candles were lit across the room, shining up every single corner of it, making each and every book visible to Klaus.
’What to pick though? Not like I can tell what is good and what isn’t,’ he looked around them, touching a few, even rubbing some covers, praying some kind of godly sign would happen.
Countless shelves were laid in front of him. He could learn all of the spells if he wanted to…with time and someone to demonstrate.
Swords were hanging on the walls, golden, emerald, almost like a rainbow wall.
Same with every weapon one could think of, and armoured even.
Dark, light, every type of single armour that someone could use.
Then Klaus spotted something which looked interesting. It was a witch’s hat on a doll, wearing a dark robe. The wooden doll seemed to be old already and dusty, so was the hat.
’This looks good enough,’ as he got closer to the hat, the gravitational pressure seemed to increase on him.
He reached for the hat, his hand shaking, and then he put it on and…
Nothing happened whatsoever.
’Uh,’
he looked around trying to see if he became special or something, but there was nothing at all, nothing. The hat didn’t do anything, it seemed just like a regular hat.
“Is that the item you will choose?” The king seemed surprised as he caught up with Klaus, catching him off guard.
“That hat doesn’t really do anything…”he coughed awkwardly as if trying to ease the tension in the room, “however, I will let you pick another item if you want the hat.”
’Oh,’ Klaus looked around. He at this point genuinely had no clue what to even pick. He didn’t have a use for weapons, and he didn’t know how to use books, but despite that, he still wanted to take one.
“Thank you,” he bowed slightly in front of the king, who just seemed to chuckle out of appreciation.
’Seems weird for a king,’ but Klaus didn’t care. He just walked towards the bookshelves and took one book.
The cover was fully black except for the white text in the middle. Klaus slowly tried to read it out; however, it seemed to be in a language he didn’t understand. He opened it, and the inside was written with this language as well.
’Good enough,’ he looked at the king for verification, and he nodded, so he just put the book away in his ring.
“Good, we are done,” the king led Klaus out of the chamber, then he pushed the gate shut behind them. The runes slowly slithered back into their original place, sealing the door shut.
’That was interesting, at least I made some profit?’ Klaus wasn’t expecting to get rewarded, but he took it anyways.
“We will get a portal ready for you to leave tomorrow. Until then, you are free to rest.” The king started walking down the dark hallway again. Klaus followed after him without saying anything.
“Thank you.”
“Until then, the maids will lead you to a room; however, you are free to explore if you want to,” his curly hair was shining under the candle lights as they walked through the hallway.
“Thank you, again.” Klaus didn’t really know what to say at all, so he just kept thanking him.
After they walked out of the dark hallway, the princess from earlier was standing in front of them, her arms crossed as her violet hair seemed to be all the way on the ground.
“Myrrava, get a maid for the man—”
“I will lead him around, father.” Myrrava, however, to everyone’s surprise, interrupted the king, who genuinely seemed surprised, never seeing his own daughter like this.
“Is that fine with you, Klaus?” Vaelthar looked at Klaus for verification; however, Klaus didn’t really care; he just nodded.
“Sure, I’m fine with that,” his hands were in his pockets despite him being in the presence of rulers; he didn’t really care at all.
