Chapter 40: With Or Without
He pushed himself up from the ground, then dusted off his pants and back.
“I didn’t expect to get it on the first try…” He looked at the book, then at his hands.
“Especially not without a runequill,” he chuckled as he opened the book again and turned to page two.
“Dragon shield?”
—
Inside the headmaster’s office, a young-looking boy stood still, waiting for headmaster Marcus to come back.
“Is that even possible?” He sighed as he leaned back against the cushion and looked around the room.
Bookshelves were pushed against every wall with dozens of books on them, like soldiers standing ready for a war.
A ginormous golden chandelier hung from the ceiling.
Behind the headmaster’s desk were three huge oval-shaped windows which seemed to have runes flowing in them every passing second.
In front of his desk were two simple chairs, yet comfortable for Sir Bastian to nearly fall asleep.
He heard the door behind him, which made him turn instantly.
“Headmaster Marcus,” he jumped up from the chair and bowed slightly instantly.
“Professor Bastian,” Marcus smiled innocently as he closed the door behind himself and walked towards his desk as Bastian straightened.
“What can I help you with?” He stroked his beard whilst taking a seat.
“It’s about Klaus Albrecht Von Alderstein,” as soon as Bastian said that name, Marcus’s eyes widened instantly, a spark of interest lighting up in his eyes.
“What did he do?” To Bastian, this question sounded like Marcus had already expected something to happen with Klaus.
He cleared his throat, “He copied my spell…”
“Copied your spell?”
“After seeing it once,” Marcus’s eyes widened even further after Bastian told him everything.
“Huh?” He looked at Bastian, dumbfounded, despite being a top-level mage for decades, and being a mage of the Dominion rank, he had never heard of anything even remotely similar.
Bastian stood still, waiting to hear an answer, however, Marcus couldn’t say anything.
“He already is able to wield multiple affinities, and now he can copy—”
“Multiple affinities?” Bastian asked back, making sure he heard that right and his ears weren’t mistaking what he just heard.
“Yes, Klaus has already shown the usage of multiple affinities in the ranking tournament.”
Bastian stood dumbfounded, he wasn’t there to watch the tournament, however, if the kid was like this…
A shiver ran down his spine just imagining the obliteration he did on the other students.
“We only had a handful of mages in history who are able to do that,” Marcus pushed himself up and grabbed a parchment from his desk.
“Right…and most of them are dead…” Bastian agreed with a sigh as he looked at the window.
“And that man is there too,” Marcus looked at the news on the parchment in his hands.
“That man?” Bastian wasn’t sure who Marcus was talking about specifically.
Marcus turned the paper towards him, and his eyes nearly jumped out of their sockets.
His entire body shook, almost like he was scared just from reading the news on the parchment.
“That man is on another level…”
Bastian read through the news again, “He slaughtered an entire imperial march alone…?” His lips began twitching as he grabbed the parchment.
“Yes, Zephyr Valerius Severan,” Bastian’s hair stood on his spine as Marcus said that name.
“H-how, the imperial march has Dominion rank mages…” His hands kept shaking as he was still looking at the parchment.
“That means Zephyr has already reached the realm of an Apex,” Marcus’s tone turned grave as he said it, his voice echoing in the room as Bastian stood still, shaken.
“We must make sure the boy doesn’t become like him, we must make sure he is on our side,” he grabbed the parchment out of Bastian’s hand.
“What if he doesn’t?” Bastian asked the question he was wondering about.
“We must control him, if he turns against us in the future, then…” Marcus turned and looked out the window, “we might get erased from history.”
—
“Fuck, that’s sick!” Klaus looked at the dragon shield in front of him, which he managed to activate on his second try.
“I don’t even feel tired yet,” The shield disappeared, and he looked down at the book again.
“Though I should probably do something else as well,” He sighed and put the book under his armpit, then walked towards the door.
It spread open, and darkness hit him instantly.
’The difference is insane,’ He had to blink multiple times to adjust his eyes to the difference in lighting.
Inside, it was bright in pure whiteness, outside, the candles lit the hallway, and light only came through the windows.
After his eyes adjusted, he strode down the hallway, out the gate towards the training grounds.
“Oh?” As he looked ahead, he saw multiple people sparring on the grounds, many with spells and many using weapons.
As he was about to step onto the spectator stage, a girl bumped into him.
Klaus didn’t say anything, so she turned towards him instead, “At least fucking apologise, damn it.”
Which just so happened to tick Klaus off a cliff.
“Why the fuck would I apologise?” The girl turned to face him, her black hair covering his face nearly fully, her cat ears perked up instantly, and her tail wagged behind her back, she probably was an older year student, however, Klaus didn’t give a fuck.
“Fuck, probably because you are younger and—”
“So what if I am?” His arm around the book kept tightening as his tone turned dark.
Multiple eyes turned towards the two, however, neither of them were going to give up their right.
“Age doesn’t mean anything in this situation,” Klaus took a step forward, and the girl was towering in front of him, “all that matters is who initiated it, and that would be you.”
“Why are you so stuck up, fuck,” A vein was visibly throbbing on the cat girl’s forehead, but Klaus didn’t care, he just kept pushing.
“Maybe get a haircut, you freak, and you would be able to see forward without bumping into anyone.”
